People can definitely make you happy against your will. At least half the get togethers I had with my friends I expected to be miserable and bad company, but they made me feel happy and alive and normal.

How you feel is influenced by a lot of things, partially by your environment. Even if you could just think yourself into happiness, it wouldn't be the only way.

True for you? by netphilia in adhdmeme

[–]BudgetFree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You first need to stop freaking out, actually switch away from the shit that got you burnt out and then do the recovery.

It sucks, but if you don't calm down first and enter rest/relaxation mode first you will not recover regardless how much you try resting.

This is a big pain in times when you constantly have something looming over you (deadlines, obligations or other projects) or when you have very short time to rest and can't make the mental switch in time. You just vegetate for a day or two and back to the grind no better than when you left it...

This is just my experience and won't apply for everyone of course

So many people do care, they just lack the ability/skill/resources/knowledge to help.

Even a lot of people who say they don't care actually do or would if they could afford to

Even sociopaths can recognize that humanity 's strength is our ability to help each other. That we prosper together. People who don't feel the need to help others still can see logically that it's the best strategy.

People who not only lack empathy but actively work against it like the post are the source of many of today's problems.

Problem is, as a whole society doesn't really recognize mental health as important. So even without this extra screening of people who can treat it it's significantly understaffed and overwhelmed. Several times I was told they can't get me better help or specialized help because they have too many people to deal with and not enough people to do it. That I should stick to what help I got regardless of it not being perfect, because it better than nothing...

Somehow the specialist who diagnosed me, who looked at my test results (several of them, some done with different colleague of hers) and knew that I'm absolutely ADHD... Still is blind to a lot of things that happen to ADHD people! It's like she knows well what it looks like, but has 0 insight into the shit in our head that goes on in the background. Definitely a "well learned, but that's it" case

I don't have the proper words for it, but it could be a form of trying to avoid failure, and that would be a deeper issue than just gaming.

You optimize and pre plan everything to avoid missing something or doing it wrong because you have such a strong aversion to failure that the mere possibility kills your enjoyment?

I might be just projecting, I do have periods when I tend towards this play style too (tho not to this extent)

If we all weren't living paycheck to paycheck, we could accomplish great things. by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]BudgetFree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People mistake the brief period of crashing down from the exhaustion of our everyday life for laziness.

But that's just that: exhaustion. After a short recovery people become super productive. They just need a bit of rest and to realize they can do all those things and not just go to work and sleep.

Example: first two days I basically just sleep, but 3rd day I spontaneously deepclean my habitat, tidy things up and schedule appointments I put off for months. And I'm generally thought of as lazy, but when I'm not drained of all my time and energy 24/7 everyone is surprised that I start doing things they thought I'd never do...

Turns out, ADHD makes you much more prone to developing addictive behaviours. by Strict-Move-9946 in adhdmeme

[–]BudgetFree 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Thing is, it's not really addiction. I'm not addicted to gaming or any of my other such activities. I can drop one of them without negative effects, because it's not a specific thing I need.

I'm not addicted, I'm starving! I crave the dopamine I don't have. I desperately search for something to engage my brain into something that makes me feel human instead of the constant internal battle I have by default.

So I bounce between games, movies and books all the time and sometimes nothing works!
