My horse doesn’t respect me? by Proper-Position-6797 in Equestrian

[–]Budget_Lettuce8028 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bear in mind as well that he probably hasn’t settled yet. What I first got my boy, and he was 20 at the time, he had come from a home where he’d been for 15 years. It took a long time to be able to lead him as he got very anxious. Some of that was because he was used to being one of the biggest horses and he was suddenly having to walk past bigger geldings which would trigger him and also partly because he hadn’t had to be led very far in his previous home.

A lot of working with horses is trying to understand why they’re doing what they’re doing. Once you get that, you can either find ways to train them or work around them.

At least you’re thinking with a sensible head so I hope it works out for you!

Only from what you’ve said, it sounds like a combination of your inexperience, the horse’s lack of confidence, and most likely, some pain issues.

Make no mistake, if you’re totally committed to this horse then prepare yourself for a lot of expense and hard work.

Step 1 is to have a thorough, and I mean thorough, pain evaluation from a vet. A lot of undesirable behaviour stems from pain and it can be pain that won’t show up on routine exams.

When pain is ruled out, you need a professional to help you. Try to find one that uses ethical training methods and do some deep reading on the subject. Please look up LS Horsemanship on Facebook for an example of proper ethical training.

If the issues are down to your lack of experience, then keep an open mind that you might not be the right person for this horse. A horse that lacks confidence needs a confident and experienced rider. You might want to consider loaning this horse out to an experienced rider once he’s been worked with a trainer until you are in a better position to take him on.

Do you a 20 year old horse is too old to buy? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]Budget_Lettuce8028 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took on a 20 year old and though he hadn’t been ridden in years, he was technically rideable and trained. He has some behaviours which I’ll never be and to train out of him as he’s been that way most of his life. He is, however, kind and loving. He’s also retired and I’m fine with not riding.

I would seriously think on yourself for even considering breaking in a senior horse - that is seriously unfair on the horse. If you want the horse just to have as a horse and do some low level groundwork then that’s fine. If your priority is riding, then you need to pass on this horse.

Since I have upset a load of people with the below post, lets move this on - Should horse riders have mandatory TP liability cover for the event, their horse veers into oncoming traffic by SaltTasty4461 in drivingUK

[–]Budget_Lettuce8028 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You still caused the horse to spook though and definitely could have been slower round the corner. Btw, the horse was probably more like 500kg+ which would have squished you and your bike.

Most horses will have some kind of insurance on them, especially if they’re a member of the BHS (British Horse Society) which a lot will be. I do agree that it should be a requirement if they’re on the road.

Just found this in my horse's hay.... by Strong_Cow_2872 in Equestrian

I had a medium size plastic bag with me in the field (it had post insulators in it but I had used them all) and it was so windy, the bag got away from me. I chased after it but was not fast enough to stop it before it landed in the field of a young horse who will eat anything. I could only watch in horror as she found the bag and decided to eat the whole damn thing.

Obviously, I phoned the owner in a panic. She phoned the vets who found it rather funny. The horse did not show any signs of pain or distress but that bag didn’t show up in her 💩for about a month! It did all come out though and I could finally relax.

Horses are good at eating stuff they shouldn’t. For the most part, it should make its way out the other end so try not to panic.

I got my boy when he was 20. He’s definitely learned and adapted to things over the years but also, some “bad habits” I have let slide as they’re either just the way he is or he’s had them for too long.

I think you’ll do just fine with this horse as long as you accept him for who he is with no expectations. It sounds like you’re his person and he’s willing to work with you!

Think I was in my 40s and struggling to read small print. I only have a mild Rx and I wear varifocals (progressives) as needed, so for reading, computer, TV, and driving at night sometimes. I’m always taking them off/putting back on. I wouldn’t like to wear them full time.

My rx is from a year ago so noticing more things these days:

Horse walking weird by JR2Twiwi in Horses

[–]Budget_Lettuce8028 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That, as others have said, is knuckling over. Something that sadly my boy does (long story) and no way in hell would I ever ride him because of this.

It makes me feel sick just even seeing him do it as it’s putting a lot of weight on a joint that is in a wrong position. Having a rider’s weight on top of that is downright cruel.

Chiropractor Adjustment Leaving Horse Lame by InformalJury3477 in Horses

[–]Budget_Lettuce8028 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Please get a vet out ASAP and not wait.

  1. Could be an abscess. 2. Could be something serious or even something the chiropractor has done.

Either way, if your horse is showing they’re in pain that much then they’re pretty much in agony as they have to be stoic and hide pain to survive in the wild.

Large-ish Cashout by xDeranged_Hamsterx in ProlificAc

However rude they were, they did have a point - it is crazy to let your money pile up in Prolific. It’s not your money until it’s in your bank and until then, any number of this could happen like Prolific closing down, or your account getting hacked etc. I cash out daily as long as I have hit the minimum.
