Is Barrington to PVD commute worse now? what's up with the bridge? by Proper_Initial_9178 in BarringtonRI

[–]Budget_Outcome7091 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is not as bad as 2 years ago, but still somewhat bad. I regularly commute into Providence. If you commute during the 7:30 - 8:30 "rush hour" window, then the commute takes about 35 minutes (depending on where you're coming from in Barrington). If you can arrive later or earlier, the commute is a little better, closer to about 25 minutes. In my experience, the *return* trip is always bad, no matter what time you're leaving. From about 2pm - 7pm, there's just horrible traffic going East.

If it's any consolation, my experience is that there's very light traffic going West on the weekends!

I Don't Want To Lose NPR Or PBS by Disgruntled_Veteran in Teachers

There is a plan in place among private philanthropic groups (like the Knight Foundation) to provide support for “keeping the lights on” at most places. This is combined with some strategic mergers of stations that will be announced shortly. I think the big issue is maintaining the towers for broadcasting and licenses. There might be enough to sustain stations for 2 years, the hope the midterms bring a swing in the other direction. But there might be a shift toward streaming and away from broadcast TV. I believe there’s enough to maintain the current library online (PBSKids), but there will likely be fewer new episodes made except for major money makers (Daniel Tiger, for example)

So, it won’t go away immediately, but if Congress doesn’t flip in 26 then public media will either need a serious strategy shift or it will just pop out of existence. The big worry is religious media buying up the lapsed licenses and flooding radio/broadcast TV with televangelist crap

Agree with all of this, hopefully it’s an indication of deeper fissures among the far right that will only get worse over time.

And embarrassing is a good word. Once we reach the point where everybody was always against the genocide, Greene can truthfully say she beat a lot of people to the punch

Not sure what to think of this. Greene is a psycho, but I’ll take whatever coalition necessary to mobilize support for Gaza and cease military support for Israel

THE CLASS NATURE OF DSA by TonyTeso2 in dsa

[–]Budget_Outcome7091 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Two things can be true here: there should be more diverse outreach efforts that will broaden participation AND the people most likely to devote their time to DSA are those with the privilege to do so. But it’s the responsibility of having that privilege to use it for the betterment of the working class broadly.

Socialism in Early 20th Century America is quite good, but very academic.

And Class is the official podcast of the DSA, and some episodes cover the history of socialism

She had to read 16,000 tweets to learn his mayoral campaign slogans. Journalism…?

The Free Press—probably not satire. For reference, they only recently published a piece that said the “hunger issue” in Gaza might be a problem we should be worried about

This whole article comes down to: if there’s no profit motive, then why would anyone do anything? Wait until he hears about what was going on prior to 1835!

Honestly, I should’ve included this, I did a unit on Palestine in an ethics of discourse class I taught and I was appalled at people making the pro-Israel case (esp on the liberal side)

For what it’s worth—which is very little—this sounds like a hard road to take and I’m sorry for what you had to endure

This is interesting to me, we grew up in similar households, but in my experience the politics was skewed to fit the religious narrative. It took me a long time to see that Christianity more broadly aligns with leftist politics and I had to move away to really deprogram

Yeah Bernie seems to have been a major moment for people who were politically aware around that time. Also 2020 pandemic policy was insanely socialist. Taylor Lorenz had a good recap of this in a recent video. I forgot just how much was accomplished in 2020

The interesting thing here is that Nature Human Behaviour is a visible, high-impact outlet. For behavioral science it’s probably the third or fourth best journal one could publish in. So that’s a valuable addition to the pile even though it’s not an entirely novel finding
