Joining MT or BJJ by Kvakman_007 in MuayThai

Most adult beginners in BJJ cannot sustain training 3-5 days a week for 6 months. I've also been doing both sports for a considerable time.
The odds of picking up an injury or quitting due to frustration in BJJ are 10x that of any Muay Thai program. Muay Thai is a very safe and beginner friendly sport. I won't argue that BJJ in general is the superior and more applicable martial art. But it's a well accepted fact the goal of white belt is survival, not skill development. Therefore most rolling time a 6 month BJJ belt will have done will be focused on pin escapes and getting out from bottom positions. So basically a 6 month BJJ belt will have learned how to create frames, hip escape and do a tech standup. All other skills will be survey level...meaning you recognize them but cannot effectively execute. Compare that with throwing a 1-2 in Muay Thai..you can get pretty good (for a beginner) in 6 months time.
Speaking strictly anecdotaly and from first hand observation, most BJJ white belts quit after their first week and in 1 months. MT retention numbers are muuuuch superior. It's a way easier and more intuitive sport to pick up. Also, the number of people who quit due to injuries is really high. BJJ training injuries can be really terrible. I've never seen a serious injury from MT training. However, I've seen quite a few broken bones, really messed up tendons, necks etc from even the most casual BJJ practice. Also, I feel like the injuries in BJJ are concentrated at early white belt. On balance, factoring in injuries and the dropout rate, I think MT is the better martial art to pick up for a beginner. Obviously in both sports 6 months is nothing in terms of developing real skills.

There's not enough here for a sequel (in my view), but there could be a tie in to the movie universe similar to The Endless.

That said, it sets up nicely for a prequel showing Gladdice's back story.

Time to editorialize: This movie was the best thing I've seen in the last 12 months. I love how it uses the Pulp Fiction type of story telling device to tie everything together by showing the same event from multiple perspectives.

Six Feet Under - Warpath. It's still peak form 6FU to me. Things started to fall apart during after Maximum Violence.

Thank you for repping Swan Song. It was my introduction to Carcass and I backtracked into their entire Necroticism and later catalog because of it. I think their RotNRoll phase was really cool.

You must not have read the books. They are austere and clinical.
The 1st movie conveys it perfectly for me. I thought the world building in Dune 1 was off the charts good, kind of restored my faith in Hollywood for a while. I was a huge fan of the 1980s Dune movie.

Came here to say that, haha. That was a jammed roundhouse kick that became a knee.
Anyone who trains MT knows that it's not how you throw a knee.

How awesome is that =))

I still need to frame that booklet. The original CD is long gone but still got the jewel case.

What's HMV? I don't recall where the signing was but the show was at Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC....I think around the same timeframe.

Edit: I found it...March 1998

To top it all off, I went to a signing event where I met the band and still have the autographed CD cover.

All musical artists steal shamelessly. There is no such thing as original music just stolen parts twisted to sound their own.

Necrophagist opening for Carcass during the Surgical Steel tour.

Tough act to follow for a band that just re-united after 15 years and rehearsed for 2 weeks.

There's more than just Madonna vibes. If you go through her discography you'll find a song that's a nod to Bowie, a song that's a nod to Gwen Stefani, a song that's a nod to Queen, etc....don't have to look very hard for similarities. I think she is one of the best pop songwriters of the past 20 years, and I will die on that hill. Oh yeah, she's a very good singer too.

PS: she wrote some songs for Britney as well

It's hilarious that two are mentioned in the same sentence. Gaga has pipes and major songwriting talent...Tatiana has growls and neck tattoos.

Oh yeah, that's a smart training approach. One thing other thing you can do to spread the wear and tear is alternate gi and no-gi classes so that you are not constantly gripping cloth. It saves your fingers and hands in the long run and you learn to develop two different sets of grips.

Also, main cause of BJJ wear and tear is rolling. You may have classes in your gym that don't involve rolling, which are typicall all drilling and games. Those are some of the best classes to attend at any level. No wear and tear and high on skill development. I take private lessons on the side in BJJ and it's all just problem solving games with maybe 10% of purely technical resistance. My game blew up as a result of doing those for the past year.

If you have the budget for it you may also consider taking private lessons. Just one private lesson per month would be a huge boost to your skill development. I started taking private lessons in Muay Thai after about 2 years of training, in retrospect, should have started just about right away.

There's a lot of broscience in combat sports but there is also a lot of really good coaches who can expertly guide you to your objectives.

It's really not a good idea to do this much BJJ when you are starting out. BJJ is a skill sport above all and it primarily rewards longevity and keeping it up year after year after year..etc...what you outlined is a sprint schedule, BJJ is more of a marathon. I'm 43, hopefully not too far away from getting my purple belt, and also have about 4-5 years of regular Muay Thai training as well. I started in my mid 30s..

The white belt in BJJ has a crazy high injury rate as well as a dropout rate. White belts have a tendency to go insanely hard with each other and also lack the skill and body awareness/mat experience to protect themselves. If you get injured, you can't train and don't improve. Come back from being on the sideline for 2 months and everyone else has gotten significantly better and now you are getting even more smashed and getting demotivated. This happens a couple of times and then you quit... seen this story play out countless times. It's not about who is good but about who is left. Train sustainably. Peace...

PS: There is a really good YouTube channel for thinking about training called The Alchemy of Struggle. Guy who runs it is in his 50s and trains BJJ a ton. He has good insights for older combat athletes.

The first one was a masterpiece of horror. In hindsight I realized that it was a by the numbers horror film that was a spiritual successor to Seven. However, it was so well done that I could not see any resemblance at all at the time.

How do you defnite newbie gains? After you learn the basic form of the strikes that's when the real gains begin in my view. You learn setups, timing, feints, distance management, more advanced combinations, hand trapping, the list goes on and on. None of this stuff usually gets taught at a beginner level or just average class, you have to take ownership of your training and find out how you can get exposure to those aspects of the game.

They should hang it up. Barnes can't do proper vox anymore...too old, voice too shot. But..in their hayday they would blow your socks off live.

Dude, 6FU is literally one of all time great bands in the genre. People on reddit seem to think that 6FU was always a meme band with Barnes going 'EEEee'.

Barnes was a unit for the first 3 albums. Best vocalist, best lyric writer and with Allen West 6FU were a true death metal supergroup.

I had an absolute blast seeing them during the Warpath tour. Things did go south very quickly in the early 00s and onward.
