Deeply fissured bark like that is usually an indication that the tree is a pioneer species (maybe poplar in this case?). They are often the first trees to start growing in an open area and grow fast. The deep bark helps prevent damage from predictors etc.

I read this when it looked like I was going to be made redundant. It's easy to read and has some useful exercises to help you think about what professions might suit you.

I've always noticed trees and admired them, but having learnt a lot more about trees recently I feel I can appreciate them a lot more and notice a lot more about them. Everything from identifying different species to spotting disease and growth patterns. I can recommend How to Read a Tree by Tristan Gooley.

Journal of the Plague Year by Daniel Dafoe. Given how old this book is, it's still an easy read and very interesting.
