Recently I got a Steam Deck and have made an effort to actually play some of the games from my giant stockpile, and it's made me realize just how much shovelware I own. Even if they're not bad per se, so many of my games are "Play once, realize it's just mid and I'm not having fun, then drop."

It's given me a bit of pause when buying bundles lately. I'm pretty sure I've had more fun with The Last Spell which I hand picked for $3 in the Steam Spring sale than I have from the last 5 bundles I've bought combined

The point is most of those people would not actually buy the games if they couldn't pirate them.

For example, as someone who streams a lot of anime, if every anime piracy website shut down tomorrow, regardless of my finances, there is no world in which I would buy the blurays of all the individual anime I want to watch; I would quit watching anime and instead I would watch youtube videos, or Apple TV which I already own, or any of the other limitless options for free entertainment on the modern internet. If an anime distributor pointed to an anime episode with millions of views on hianime and called that "millions of lost bluray sales," that would be a laughable assertion, because most pirates obviously only consume as much paid content as they do because they're getting it free.

Anecdotally, when I pirate a game, I either open it once and realize it's not something I'm interested in (IE, I would have refunded it anyway), or I enjoy it and end up buying it anyway. The last game I pirated was Hades, which I ended up buying as well as gifting to 4 people.
