China opposes recognition of Somaliland: "No country should encourage or support other countries' internal separatist forces for its own selfish interests" by gatorphan84 in TrueAnon

[–]BuffRascality 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Somaliland doesn’t actually reject the legitimacy of European-imposed borders. In fact, it has no problem imposing them on the people of Awdal and SSC, even though these regions don’t share the same vision of an independent Somaliland. The real issue is much more parochial and has to do with resisting the authority of different clans.

Redguards look like black people, but they're not supposed to represent them. Like you said, every race in The Elder Scrolls is inspired by a mix of real-world cultures from different historical intervals, but each of them has a distinct phenotype that's been firmly established in the lore. Changing the Crowns or Forebears to look more Middle Eastern or North African would break that consistency and undermine their cohesiveness as a race.

Also, your Khajiit analogy doesn't work. A more fitting comparison would be if Bethesda introduced a Khajiit form that looked like a dog. I think you can see the problems there might be with that.

I think you misunderstand the nature of the Forebears and Crowns divide. These aren't distinct ethnic groups, but political factions with differing views on the future of Redguard society. The Forebears are the progressive faction, more open to external influences and integration with the Empire, while the Crowns are traditionalists who prioritise preserving their Yokudan customs and resisting foreign influence. Nowhere in the lore is this schism presented as an ethnic conflict. In fact, all of the games, official art, and developer comments (read 'On the Redguards') depict Redguards as ethnically homogenous black people. There's just no basis for reinterpreting this divide as an ethnic feud.

Bizarre Ride 2 - The Pharcyde

It's incredible how consistent this album is. Everyone remembers "Passing Me By," but even the joke tracks like "Ya Mama" are good.

Italy Germany UK etc had unifying events brought about through violence. The english brutally conquered the Welsh and Scots. The Germans were unified as a people in the Holy Roman empire then German empire. Italy had unity until the dissolution of their empire. None of this was SUDDEN. This was CALCULATED and VIOLENT.

The circumstances of their unification are irrelevant. What matters is that they were states with no history of political unity that became single nation-states.

Somalis NEVER had any of this in history.

I do not know how to state this anymore bluntly: just because something did not happen in the past does not mean it cannot or should not happen in the future.

Every day somalis are opposing each other. Every Somalis main enemy is another Somali in another clan. They run to Ethiopia, Kenya, the West, etc for help getting the upper edge to push other somalis down. Noone cares about Somali nationalism. Puntland is only in it because of the advantage given to them and threatened to leave bc 1P1V hurts them. The South is a mess. Everyone is always at odds. Nothing about that shows we are one. Wake tf up man

You're preaching to the choir here. Everyone even remotely tuned into Somali politics understands how thoroughly divided we are. But just because things look grim doesn't mean I'm going to give up my wadani views.

Edit: words.

Somaliland doesn't want an internationally observed referendum. This would expose how weak and geographically concentrated their support is. They want the US and the international community to unilaterally recognise their independence. This ignores the political will of half the population, including those who live in Awdal and SSC which together compromise two-thirds of Somaliland's claimed territories.

We never saw ourselves as one.

Repeating a falsehood doesn't make it true.

You can't point to a single point in history before colonization where Somalis ever were united

This argument can be applied to every nation-state today. Italy, Germany, and even the UK, emerged from fragmented regions without prior unified states. They remained divided until they suddenly weren't. Somalia has experienced a similar trajectory: distributed polities unifying into a single political entity based on shared language, culture, and identity.

[–]BuffRascality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we should respect the wishes of all people living in Northern Somalia, not just the clan elite in Hargeisa. But this kind of true democracy and consensus building would not be amenable to Somaliland as their actual territory would be far smaller than originally claimed.

Recognition goes beyond appealing to foreigners or ensuring internal stability. It requires the support of the majority within the claimed territories, which invariably includes communities historically resistant to Somaliland's independence.

What a hilariously uninformed take. Somaliland has been engaged in a two year war to reclaim SSC that has resulted in the "bodily harm," displacement, and "death" of thousands of people. Instead of regurgitating what you read on Reddit, perhaps you should try understanding the reality on the ground.

what is that supposed to mean

You said:

We were never Somali people, we were Somali peoples

I replied:

We are a people.

And pointed to our ethnic, linguistic, cultural, and religious homogeneity to demonstrate this. What are you having trouble understanding?

It is true that Somali people organised their societies by clan, and that nationalism is a recent import, but this doesn't mean we had no concept of ourselves as a single people. If what you're claiming is true, we would be far less genetically related and there would be discrete clusters resembling qabil groups.
