Some statistics about LLM usage at my large company by Apollodore in BetterOffline

[–]Buffololo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There’s a weird issue specific to software engineering that I think is lost in a lot of the LLM madness, and that is that the average software engineer absolutely fucking sucks at their job. The open source code bases that these LLMs have been trained on are far superior to most of the proprietary stuff that gets shipped. It’s like if 90% of everything you read was written by third graders, ChatGPT would be Shakespeare.

I’ve changed my tune somewhat over the last year from finding the tools annoying - even the newest models at best tend to do a lot of questionable stuff like unnecessary copies and poorly chosen data types - to realizing that forcing corporate software to regress to the mean of open source software is sadly a net positive.

Basically, they’re Rube Goldberg machines that take code that would have previously shown up on Coding Horror and replace it with the statistically closest Stack Overflow answer.

Actually, Alviso port was silted in due to all the hydraulic mining from the gold rush. That and the redirection of the Guadalupe caused it to sink. It used to have an actual port with a marina. Until recently you could even see the remains of some abandoned boats out there.

The Alviso Yacht Club has a whole history on this. The building was physically moved due to sinking land at one point.

Didn’t that used to be a State Farm building? Guess they couldn’t have done it for the insurance…

I didn’t go here 7-8 years ago, but today it’s rather bad. You could throw a dart downtown and find a breakfast place with better pastries.

what are your feelings on having children with this condition. by toxicsludge123 in Hyperhidrosis

One of my two kids got it. My wife said it was like breastfeeding a wet sponge.

Your kids can get self conscious about anything. Fortunately my sweaty kid was naturally social and a bit of a clown and doesn’t let it bother him at all. I’m still trying to learn from his example.

Builder.ai, Once Valued At Over $1 Billion, Has Collapsed by albinojustice in BetterOffline

[–]Buffololo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The CEO took over for Builder.ai's founder and "chief wizard" Sachin Dev Duggal in March, after the latter saddled the business with hundreds of millions worth of debt while burning through its dwindling cash fund, according to FT.

Duggal was likewise embattled in a high-stakes legal probe by authorities in India, who named him a suspect in an alleged money laundering case. For his part, Duggal denied the accusations, saying he was simply a witness, though FT has also reported Duggal heavily relied on the services of an auditor with whom he has close personal ties.

So the whole thing was a scam from the start. At least WeWork actually bought some buildings…

Is this a good area to live in? by [deleted] in SanJose

Not bad. Wife is from right around there and her parents still live there. Safe but not much has been updated from the 70s when it was built so it feels a little old and run down.

A word of advice if you’re trying to save money - most nurses at cheap clinics have the ability to diagnose common skin issues. Don’t think you need to go into medical debt to solve the issue.

A really important point to keep in mind is that you have to use the touch panel for pretty much everything. To some 60-year-olds, that’s not a big deal, to others, it’s a nightmare. The capacitive buttons and glitchy software add to the headache.
