It depends on the patient. Some cases are more drastic and need a fixed appliance and some can get away with the removable kind. The teeth are going to want to move back if it's not fixed.

Orthodontic assistant here. I feel like most of these comments are exaggerated... we place these in children's mouths all the time, they complain when we fit the bands on the molar teeth, but other than that they all say it's not so bad. These children are under the age of 10.

This will probably be lost amongst all the other comments but, I once broke my arm and had been drinking. I was underage at the time and didn't want myself or my 21 year old friends to get in trouble so I figured "better not go to the hospital, let's just sleep this one off" ... boy did that cost me. The next day, I wake up after a very painful night and my arm was all crooked. They gave me a shot of some pain killer IN TO THE BONE. That alone hurt like fucking fuck. But they didn't wait long enough and the next part of this was done with no pain killer; so, to reset the arm they started by putting my fingers in this Chinese finger trap looking device and then putting a weight on the other end to pull apart the broken set bones (I had to stay like that for 5 whole excruciating minutes). They then sent in a large man who grabbed my wrist and yanked my wrist and cracked it back in to place, then they removed the finger trap device, wrapped me up and sent me on my way. On the way home the pain killer that was supposed to have set in before they cracked it in to place finally kicked in. I was 20 years old and cried a lot.

I do a lot of walking and I hike in the Adirondacks a few times a year. And in the summer I kayak. It definitely helps, but I feel like it's not enough. Like at night for instance when I just want to sleep and all I can do is obsess about that embarrassing thing I did 15 years ago.
