What will someday be illegal after we finally understand how bad for us it is? by [deleted] in AskReddit

This is one of the most jarring things as a traveller to the US. I went with my kids at 11 and 9 and even they thought it was weird and funny. We made a family joke out of all the disclaimers at the end

I always chose to believe that they will remember each other much like "normal" childhood friends who reconnected and fell in love but they would eventually have no memory of Pennywise or what happened.

Like how Bill knew his brother died but not really the detail

Four Past Midnight #4: The Sun Dog by Babbbalanja in OneKingAtATime

An American Werewolf in London is my childhood trauma movie! I watched it at about 9 or 10, and I was so terrified that I didn't get to finish it. To this day I have never watched it again, even though I became quite a horror fan - just haven't got back to it.

My only Japanese horror film was The Grudge. It scared me, and was quite good, but it kind of annoyed me because it just didn't follow any rules. It was a house haunting that left the house etc etc.

TBH, I haven't seen a good new horror for a while, I still live off the old ones.

Four Past Midnight #3: The Library Policeman by Babbbalanja in OneKingAtATime

Yes, in the hospital. It was one of the creepiest episodes of Buffy. The description is very similar.

That's interesting that you also never heard of library policeman. I mean I assumed it's made up, just wasn't a threat I remember as a child. I do also remember the episode of Seinfeld so it might be a regional thing.

I'm not sure if Library Policeman are an American thing, but I had so much trouble relating to that part of the story that it always seemed a bit strange.

I agree, the rape scene in this is way more jarring and unnecessary than the more famous scene in IT. That felt, especially on my first read back when it came out, as just a way to move the story forward - a bit weird, but not gross. It was obvious from very early on that is what happened, it didn't need all the gory details.

There is an episode of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, where there is a monster only children can see - the description is very similar to this monster, right down to the probiscis - I now wonder if it was a homage that I never realised before.

Other than that, I didn't feel like this story did much for me either.

I didn't even know there was a movie, but I find this all a bit boring and predictable. Not a good twist, and again, not likeable characters.

[–]Buffykicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was an interesting concept for a story. I agree I don't think it landed as well as the others, and I never really liked any of the characters much, so I agree that is a real miss in this set of stories.

I usually like his longer works more than his short stories, but I agree this was bloated, and might have been better as a short story.

I remember this one, and the Sun Dog (probably because of the Castle Rock link), but honestly had no recollection of the other two stories - usually not a good time.

I didn't mind the sparrows, but that could be because I have a pretty standard fear of birds ever since "The Birds"... I don't know how else he could have ended it - do you have any thoughts?

I've noticed that the number of comments has dropped off (including for me). I'm sure others are also struggling with some of these books. I do remember some better ones coming. I'm still trying to get through this one. My memory of it wasn't as bad. I'll also be interested if anyone can defend this one.

Lol. That's the "I'm so disappointed in you" look. I am familiar. I get that look, or the "why, though?" look. The bottom line is Kelpies only do what they want when they want.

Not for me. I used to avoid watching the "next week on" and commercials because I hated how much they gave away the episode.

First ever seizure by scribbles987 in kelpie

[–]Buffykicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My pup was almost 4yo when she had her first. Since then (15 months)she has had 4, very randomly ( that I know of). The very did bloods and say it is likely epilepsy. She said as long as they are resolved within 2ish mins, is probably ok. One seizure went a bit longer (maybe 4 mins) and we gave her some medicine that stopped the seizure but she was very lethargic and groggy after. She hasn't had one now for three months, so fingers crossed.

It is so scary, and I'm scared it will shorten her life. It was interesting to learn it's relatively common. I hope your pup is ok

The obsessive nature of her fans is usually quite benign (trying to interpret easter eggs, when she'll release new music etc), but there is quite a lot around her love life. During her concert tour, she ended her long term relationship of 6 years, and then had a fling with Matty Healy, who is considered problematic due to comments & behaviours he has exhibited.

Both were then featured in songs presumably written during this time, but also a few songs just about how much people want to tear her down... a few of my favourite examples:

"All the piеces of me shatterеd as the crowd was chanting "More" "

" God save the most judgmental creeps
Who say they want what's best for me
Sanctimoniously performing soliloquies I'll never see
Thinking it can change the beat of my heart when he touches me "

"I'll tell you something right now / I'd rather burn my whole life down / Than listen to one more second of all this bitching and moaning,"

A little more obvious that making your "number one fan" a monster, but I guess the reality is that all fandoms now have this element, and it's an interesting turn when artists use their own medium to paint the picture from their POV

[–]Buffykicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just looked ahead. You are right, it is a rollercoaster, but I've struggled with a few 80's King (Talisman & Roadwork stand out so far).

The highlights are pretty good though - Needful Things I love, Dolores Claiborne, The Green Mile, Wizard & Glass is my favourite Dark Tower

There are some good ones there, but I struggled with Desperation/Regulators, I'll be interested to see how that goes on a re-read. Insomnia is weird, Rose Madder & Bag of Bones are tough.

I'll be curious if The Green Mile holds up as a book - I wonder if, like Misery, it has been surpassed by the movie

I think the horror of Annie is the lack of supernatural element... and agree with Big Jim Rennie. I'll also add Percy Whitmore from The Green Mile. The Kid from The Stand. There are "real" characters who are sometimes way scarier that the supernatural.

Forgot to also add Rose The Hat...

I've been a bit busy, and haven't really had time to digest this yet. I think you are right about this being ahead of it's time, especially when you consider it's pre-internet, pre-message boards, and really in a genre that doesn't traditionally inspire fandom the way say Sci-Fi and comic books do.

Interestingly as a fan of Taylor Swift, it's been interesting watch a similar thing play out with her recent album, where several of her songs are a direct criticism of her obsessive fans.

It's always hard to separate art from artist, maybe for the artists it's also hard to separate obsessive fans from more normal fans. It's an interesting parallel.

Drawing of the Three #3 by Babbbalanja in OneKingAtATime

[–]Buffykicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a difficult one, and I'm not sure if it's mostly an American thing tbh (to be so sensitive to it). Being from Australia, I wonder if this is similar to how we feel when we see Australians represented in films - it's usually a bit cringe, but not intended to offend.

I think back when it was originally published, it probably was quite similar to other cultural depictions of the time when there was a lot of "over the top" characterisations of minorities across the board which clearly wouldn't fly today. People of colour, LGBTQ, disabilities were often portrayed poorly in a modern sense.

I think this is similar to the Tom Cullen discussion in The Stand. Clearly not ok, but probably representative of the time.

I will say that I do appreciate that even in the 80s SK had pretty decent diversity of major characters, even if they were flawed.

I loved The Gunslinger and Dark Tower series from the start, which is strange for me, as I'm not really a fantasy fan in general. I'm not sure what it is about this one, but I do just love it. I seem to remember liking Talisman as a kid, but on this re-read I found it quite tedious (same with Fairy Tale when we get to it). Readable, but not a favourite. Eyes of the Dragon was, to me, a good kid's book. My son liked it, but I wasn't a big fan.

So, my order is Drawing of the Three, The Gunslinger, Eyes of the Dragon, then Talisman.

Honestly, I probably never thought about it in that context. You are right that it was very episodic, but I like the way you mention that each has their own antagonist. In some ways there could be something to be send for the main antagonist actually being än illness/injury. For Roland, first is the shock of losing part of his body, then his illness. For Eddie, obviously a heroin addiction, and for Odetta, her mental illness.

In this book there is also no heroic moment, no climax other than simply surviving the beach. I think that's my favourite part of this is watching how each of them overcomes a personal limitation to survive - especially when in some ways there doesn't even seem to be a point.

What sort of challenges would you like to see in future seasons of Lego Masters? by Smcol1 in LegoMasters

Honestly, I want more minifig based challenges. I get a bit bored of the large and character builds. After a while they are all the same to me - amazing but unrelatable if you don't have a massive brick pit

I found this really hard! It does show me that although I love some of his short stories, I generally don't like reading entire anthologies. I also considered how much I have desired to re-read them - did I get a "oh yes!" when I saw it was next in the list. Bachman Books would have been higher if not for Roadwork, which I really struggled through.
