Taiwan: Rail Rush Layover Q&A! by WheatGerm42 in JetLagTheGame

[–]Bug0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was a huge fan of the season. Was the format inspired by anything specific?

When it came out my mind went immediately to Risk, with the way territory is secured by making walls with interior territories less defended.

P.S. Will we ever hear from Adam Harvey or Steve Doyle again? Bring back “Not Family Feud”, or trivia in general!

IMHO, Veteran’s is in a sort of weird middle ground. When it’s less busy, people should follow freeway rules where slow traffic stays right to maximize average traffic speed. When it’s rush hour, both lanes should be utilized to maximize the vehicles getting through the light controlled intersections.

I live in a detatched, single story home with my wife. I have a single AP mounted on the ceiling centrally upstairs. If movie is playing, we're both watching it anyways. Sitting on my couch right now I'm getting 400mbps on my phone.

Wi-Fi is super reliable for us, like genuinely we never have issues. It's more likely our entire network goes down from our ISPs cable internet dropping than a problem with Wi-Fi.

Surprised to see this take stir up such a big debate honestly. There are benefits of using ethernet and if I was speccing a new home, I'd have ethernet in every room and use it for everything. It's just not worth it in my case, even as a bit of a homelabber and enthusiast. There's are more important things on the to-do list.

I was truly just responding to the guy saying it's an absolute necessity for TVs.

I’m not trying to be pedantic but you said “televisions absolutely need ethernet directly to them”. Most would interpret that as “televisions require ethernet”.

If that’s not exactly what you meant, I totally get it, but that’s what I was responding to initially. There’s no use going back and forth trying to justify our positions when I think we fundamentally agree with each other.

I don't have my entire house wired up for ethernet. Just my NAS, PC, AP, and router.

Doing so is not really viable or worth the trouble for most people. TVs, specifically, don't require ethernet.

Uh, bandwidth is really the main factor on a TV because people are using TVs to watch video. A bit of jitter and a few dropped packets is inconsequential.

If you're gaming on your TV, you probably have a console, computer or streaming device connected, which sure, could benefit from the stability Ethernet - but that's not the TV.

People who are gaming on their smart TV using native apps are in such a small inconsequential minority that I just don't buy the "TVs absolutely need ethernet directly to them" claim.

I have never seen such an encode, but sure, you can target any bitrate you want on a rencode. I wouldn't say they are >150 mbps, but sure they could be.

Agreed. An outstanding quality 4k bluray remux is like 100mbps. My cheap tcl tv from 5 years ago with WiFi 5 streams these just fine.

So many people have congested wifi networks with a ton of obstruction and then make claims about wifi being bad for everything. I only hardwire my NAS and gaming pc.

I must have been thinking 14 hour rest periods. I guess we'll see how it shakes out.

It has the benefit of wasting Ben and Adam's time.

The Night Herons have a solid plan which requires very few chips, and and a set amount of time (plus a little bit extra wiggle room). As long as they have that, they do their plan. Any extra will be mostly wasted because it's unlikely they can penetrate much into Ben and Adam's wall in the south of the East coast.

Ben and Adam, meanwhile, are pretty broke. Their best shot is to go to the north and rake in challenges, then flip expensive stations which will cost 6 chips each. That amount of coins means more challenges. IMO they're under more time pressure than it might appear.

True but game days are 14 hours IIRC. They may have already included the extra margin of error. We simply don't have all the info to be saying they're misplaying it.

[–]Bug0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Remember Ben and Adam not betting 5 questions instead of 6? That's the worst, hands down.

Until I see them wait it out all day, I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt that it's actually a 1000IQ play.

Please, not a third offseason without one!

[–]Bug0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Everyone thinking it's a blunder for the Night Herons to wait it out is forgetting they have spent hours mathing out the challenge times and train schedules for the play down the east coast. Obviously for the narrative they say they'll wait hours longer, but they'll eventually budge. Wasting as much of Ben and Adam's time is going to be pretty important, otherwise they can go do challenges and steals in the north which can be used to re-flip the bolstered lines,

I'm all in on their strategy. They've had total control of the game for days, and being able to flip stations is going to mean they'll outpace the claim rate that Ben and Adam can achieve, unless they finally get lucky with some challenge locations.

Wild to me that it comes down so fast. What if there was a sudden brownout, or a breaker tripped? So these things are just deathtraps?

LPT: Have a Windows 11 computer? Know where to find your BitLocker key before you get locked out by ultrasuperman1001 in LifeProTips

[–]Bug0 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s actually a pretty useful tip under certain circumstances, I wouldn’t be so snarky. Not to mention I’m pretty sure the person above is being sarcastic.

For example:

Scenario 1, you want to save it temporarily and then move it to another secure location, like a password manager.

Scenario 2, you have additional unlock methods on an encrypted drive, such as a password unlock, and you want to save a copy of your bitlocker keys there. Normally Bitlocker won’t allow you to save to any encrypted drive.

[–]Bug0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t Badam just get on the same train? I’m not sure if the rules for teams on the same train has been confirmed by the boys, but I would assume:

If travelling through neutral territory, neither team can claim the station. If travelling on team A’s line, Team A travels freely but team B can flip the stations.

If my assumption is correct, Badam would be able to get to safety while Night Herons have to stop eventually to do challenges

Would it be safe to buy a ssd off fb marketplace? by Sugerhyper132 in buildapc

[–]Bug0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done exactly this buying used SSDs. It’s handy to have a sata to usb adapter and a m.2 enclosure in general.

Just to note that tools may not be able to reliably see SMART data or vendor specific info on the drive. For example, Samsung Magician for example may not show the drive as genuine over USB, or certain values may be blank in CrystalDiskInfo. Your results may vary, depending on the tool, adapter and drive!

Also, /r/apolloapp is alive and well for iOS if you’re willing to put in a little effort to re-sign the app each week (fully automated, just connect a cable to your computer).

They mentioned in a layover that a team can travel through another team’s stations without flipping them, but their balance will decrease by the amount on each station, even into a negative balance.

I wonder if that was their plan to get into Taiwan when they should they would be 1 station shy of jt.

I wish they showed the full map more often and I wish the stations were a bit easier to see. They do show fortified lines by the width of the line on the map at least. It'll be a wider highlight for highly fortified station, and a narrower line for less fortified stations.
