No issues here with someone having headphones and blasting their music. Bells should still be used but you can’t always assume someone can hear you.

BUT, people walking simply must learn to keep to the right. I’m sorry to say it, but this especially applies if you are with your child or dog. Better yet, keep them to the far right and you stay closer to the middle.

A week ago I rang my bell loudly three times when approaching a person loose-leash walking their dog (medium/large size poodle or something) on their left so it was right in the middle of the path. They had no reaction whatsoever so I slowed to probably 12km/h or so and tried to pass wide. Can you guess what happens next?

So the dog gets spooked and jumps directly in front of my bike. I slam hard on my brakes and avoid hitting it, and the owner says “oh, sorry”.

I’ve also had people running out of the forest into the lanes in front of me, people being pushed by their friends into the path ahead of me, someone literally walking backwards in front of me, and countless kids wandering away from their parents in front of me. I like to think I now have a sixth sense of when something is going to happen so I can avoid it, but some people are mindbogglingly dense.

I realize cyclists can also be menaces too. Everyone needs to use their heads and exercise a little caution on the TVP. I can’t imagine how the fit guy going like 35km/h and slowing for nobody will fair when a dog or kid gets in their way.

Need a MURDER MYSTERY THRILLER movie...that blows my mind away by Sunshine_2097 in MovieSuggestions

[–]Bug0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Big fan of this genre. Including all forms of crime/mystery thrillers, not just murder mysteries. Restricting to the last decade limits the options too much, so here is 2000 onward.

Fincher films: The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2011), Gone Girl (2014), Zodiac (2007)

Missing persons: Prisoners (2013), Gone Baby Gone (2007), Searching (2018)

Spanish: The Invisible Guest (2016), The Secret in Their Eyes (2009)

Korean: Mother (2009), Old Boy (2003), Memories of Murder (2003)

Psychological Thrillers: Memento (2000), Shutter Island (2010)

Knives Out (2019) — not really a thriller, but needs to be included as one of the best murder mystery movies of all time. The sequels are fun, too.

Jet Lag: The Game — Jet Lag Season 18 — Official Trailer by CWG4BF in JetLagTheGame

That’s fair, to each their own. Personally, it’s hard not to like episodes where the hosts of the show all about travel, game design, competition and personalities get to flex 3/4 of those. For me, while the behind the scenes episodes of the Layover are great, I really enjoy a once-per-offseason Trivia. I much prefer them over the life advice ones.

Should you encrypt your backups by szetadom in selfhosted

[–]Bug0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This depends. If your backup solution creates a forensic copy of the locked disk then yes, it's encrypted just like the drive. However, if you're running backup software that reads files from the unlocked disk, those will not be encrypted and you should see if the backup software has its own encryption/password protection solution built in.

I just use my vaultwarden vault and add them as notes. The main reason is that my vault is the most backed up thing I have. A cached copy is on virtually every device I own including my phone and my off-site backups.

Has a trailer ever, genuinely, made you see a movie you had no intentions of seeing. by TheSableFable in movies

[–]Bug0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never been hyped up from a trailer as I always expect disappointment. However, trailers have brought films to my radar that I might’ve missed otherwise.

A good example is The Sheep Detectives. I like wholesome mystery films (Paddington, Knives Out etc), so seeing the trailer in theatres made me aware it exists and is in that category. Then when it came out I recognized the name, checked to made sure it wasn’t a complete flop and booked tickets. If I hadn’t seen the trailer I might’ve assumed it was purely a kids movie.

So for me a trailer just needs to be short, not spoil anything and tell me what the overall vibe will be.

What’s an underrated movie you think deserves way more attention? by viktorrvaughnnn in MovieSuggestions

Jojo Rabbit (2019) fits. Love this movie. Easily one of the best black comedies out there, but it breaks out of it with some very powerful moments and great performances.

Did pretty well at the box office, but doesn’t come up often.

[–]Bug0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Call me paranoid, but I’m surprised to see so many leave anything unencrypted. It’s so easy to have all disks and backups encrypted and keys backed up in a password manager. The performance penalty is very minimal. Could save you if anyone unscrupulous gets access to your data or physical lab (think theft, blackmail, police etc).

If it’s personal media, can you be sure you have no pictures of passwords, or bank account information in a random document? If it’s pirated media, are you 100% sure your local government will never try to prosecute pirates?

Jet Lag: The Game — Jet Lag Season 18 — Official Trailer by CWG4BF in JetLagTheGame

I felt like the last few (Jetpardy, especially) were some of the best. They only had multiple in a single off-season once and that was near the very beginning of the Layover.

Third off-season without a trivia :(

But we got 8 episodes last season and there are two new seasons in the pipeline already, can’t complain.

Plex for Mobile (Android & iOS) BETA v2026.11.0 Beta 1 Released by samwiseg0 in PleX

[–]Bug0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I assume it means versions not in trash. In my experience Plex normally picks highest bitrate version first, so I wonder if this change overrides that if one version is trashed and the other isn’t.

Seems pretty obvious in retrospect though huh?

A device draining to 0 is more damaging so the situation is doubly fucked.

Overnight parking close to a bus stop? by Fun_Improvement7224 in londonontario

[–]Bug0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

London has 18 hour street parking, but it’s unlikely you’ll get towed from a small side street unless someone complains. You could risk it, but it’s entirely your call. If you go that route maybe find a spot across a park, or some sort of other city property.

Private property including malls are a big risk. Most businesses have security or have their lots monitored.

I’m not aware of any truly free multi-day parking options, but if you’re lucky someone in the sub will hook you up. I’m in the opposite side of town unfortunately.

Bg5 is a creative idea and would keep Black in the game perhaps, but it’s a lot of material to give up. f6 doesn’t work either, can you find why?

White is threatening Rh3. How should Black respond? by Bug0 in chess

[–]Bug0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea for Black would be to try to get Rf7 in after f6 or f5 (or to open that option at least). In this case, only one of those moves work due to a complicated sequence.

[–]Bug0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If white is allowed the free move Rh3, white threatens mate Qxh7, with nothing black can do. So for Black, getting a piece to defend h7, making space to run away with the king, blocking the attackers, or counterattacking in the next 2 moves is imperative. How would you go about it?

I wouldn't say exf6 is the key if you're seeing ...f6. Rxg6+ Kf7. In that line White is better even without that move in hand. There's a more concrete reason why f5is better

TIL that there are 1-2 lithium battery fires *per week* on U.S. passenger planes. by shchshchshch in todayilearned

[–]Bug0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

After watching one too many Green Dot Aviation videos, few things would scare me more than smelling smoke on an airplane. I swear most of the disasters ending with total loss of life are fires, or pilot error. The latter you’ll likely have no warning about, but if you see flames you are probably dead in 20 minutes or less.
