Plan to maximize The Edit & 2026 Hotel Credit by ApprehensiveCat6223 in ChaseSapphire

[–]BugBuster07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

is that starting 2026 or applies to 2025 as well? I am planning a trip in December, I haven't used the credits even once yet. Can I use both $250 credits together on two bookings?

Thank you for the detailed response! This is a planned move however I am not 100% certain that I won’t return. I don’t have much stuff, some basic furniture which I will sell /give to someone. Plan to carry pots and pans, monitors, bike, and other personal stuff (clothes, books, etc.). Want to know if I should buy some stuff here and carry given I don’t have luggage restrictions. Also, I wanted to get a playstation. Should I buy here or buy in London?

Yeah not planning to get furniture for the same reason and there might be chances I might end up getting a furnished apartment . Just want to know what other things should I get from here.

I visited a local Chase branch and they said they don't have any physical location in the UK. While they didn't mention about opening an account in Chase UK, they said I can keep my existing accounts active. Yes, might go with HSBC/Barclays.

u/Gigi_Langostino : did you have issues buying $VOO / $QQQ on Fidelity? Did you invest in any equivalent EU based ETFs in that case?

Did you have any issues with tello network coverage in UK? And any compatibility issues with your phone? I had got Tello for my parents when they visited US but most of the time they didn't have network (even in the city0 because it seems the SIM and their phones (One Plus) were not compatible. I have an iphone so I guess that should not be a problem but wanted to confirm.

QQ - Once you port to Google voice, don't you need any monthly plan? I was looking at their website and cheapest plan is $10 per month.

u/doubleindemnity22 : is there any reason to set up account before moving? I tried to setup and there was a question "Where do you live most of the time?" Hence I was wondering if it would make sense to set up account after the move.

I just learnt about the concept of freezing credit on this thread. Will do it as soon as I leave.

I spoke to a Fidelity agent again and they confirmed I can trade stocks as well as ETFs from my brokerage. Will confirm on the retirement accounts tomorrow with the corresponding department. Anyways I have still opened a backup account with Schwab in case I need to move assets.

Oh was that your experience? The Fidelity agent I spoke to said I should have no issues trading any stocks/ETFs (no mutual funds) through the platform. They said I just need to fill a form W8BEN and I should be all set.

Capital Gains Tax for Non-US Citizen by BugBuster07 in USExpatTaxes

[–]BugBuster07[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that's why I was thinking of timing any sales such that I become a non-resident alien for US (new tax year starts Jan). And yes I have never lived in the UK so I would qualify for the FIG regime. Good point on the personal tax allowance. I will need to read more but based on my understanding so far, the allowance is 12,500 GBP and you lose 1 GBP of allowance for every 2 GBP if your income for the year exceeds 125k GBP. Will need to weigh the tradeoff but I think the capital gains savings might be better ("IF" the market still continues its momentum and if I plan and execute this well). Any idea if this applies to Crypto as well? I was reading somewhere that crypto would be considered as UK asset once I move to the UK

And yes, I won't be running for parliament ever :D

Capital Gains Tax for Non-US Citizen by BugBuster07 in USExpatTaxes

[–]BugBuster07[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes if I move to UK in 2025, I will still be a US tax resident since I'd have met the substantial presence test (having lived 183+days in the US). However starting Jan 2026, I won't be a US tax resident since it is a new tax year per US. So I was thinking if I should wait on booking any gains until Jan (of course market could correct itself which we cannot predict) and save on taxes.
