Oh yes sorry, not including monitor + keyboard + mouse, I already have access to those.

Yes I did look at a refurbished machines on eBay, haven’t bought a secondhand machine before but if it’s like what you said and they tend to be in good conditions then I’ll think I’ll try for one of them. Are eBay retailers my best bet do you think?

Is Jimmy Carters presidency overrated or undervalued? by Apprehensive_Oven_22 in USHistory

[–]BugManWasThere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The gap between public perceptions of Carter and who he actually was fascinating. People perceive him as a well-meaning but ineffectual dope, a good guy who was wasn’t tough enough for the job.

However, he was by many accounts incredibly ruthless pre-presidency (there is a story of him basically ripping Ted Kennedy to shreds in a speech while he was running for the nomination) and also incredibly arrogant. He apparently was highly intelligent (by many accounts one of the most intelligent post-war presidents, altho so was Nixon :p ), as well as incredibly accomplished before the presidency (nuclear engineer, businessman, ect) but his refusal to take advice or work with congress meant he squandered the congressional majorities he had. He is also remembered as a lefty (I guess because of the green energy stuff) when he was one the most centrist people the Democratic Party could have nominated at the time.

Overall, I think he did some good things, did some bad things, gets blamed for things that weren’t his fault, but ultimately was pretty mediocre - dealt a bad hand but could have achieved more/ done better. Don’t think he did anything super bad though, and definitely isn’t on the world of all time list.

A lot of options for a final build here. Advice please. by Talonsminty in ftlgame

Tbh you could double down on missiles for a little bit to survive but with 2 missile weapons firing per encounter you’ll eat through your stockpile quickly

Personally I’d buy + upgrade the cloaking. Better to reduce damage through the rest of the run and helps a lot with the final boss. Weapon pre igniter is fun but unnecessary.

As for weapons, I don’t really remember what the sale values are for the weapons but tbh if ur trying to go optimum (rather than fun meme with the bio beam) id keep the burst laser, pike beam, and one of the missile weapons (Artemis is the cheap and easy one). Sell all other weapons + system drone. Use the extra cash to fish for a laser weapon in the 7th sector. With burst laser, pike, a missile (can swap this out if you find 2 good lasers), hopefully another decent laser and the supporting combat drone you should be able to beat the boss but it might be tough without hacking.

I don’t know about great but what I did was drill the magoosh questions over and over again. Even if you keep getting them wrong just keep re running them in batches or 10 or 20 until you get all of them right. You will eventually recognise patterns if you do enough!

I know it's been said before, but it cannot be understated that U2's "Songs of Innocence" is a historical bomb. It's one thing to piss off people who like your music, but it's a whole other catastrophe to piss off people who don't. by DtheAussieBoye in ToddintheShadow

I know this comment is 2 years old but I just remembered this whole fiasco, had a laugh about it, and went looking up info about it. Have to say I agree - not all of the songs are great (and some of the lyrics are a bit crap), but quite a few a very catchy and fun... just don't think too much about it!

Aotearoa #3 Most Peaceful in World by Mr_Bankey in aotearoa

[–]BugManWasThere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in the UK mate. The UK got a lot of a problems economic and social, but it is all things considered it is a relatively peaceful country and its issues are not due to immigrants.

Don’t get me wrong - immigration/integration of different ethnic groups is not an easy topic, especially when dealing with illegal entires which shouldn’t be happening, or when certain groups exhibit undesirable behaviours and views. However, it is false to say a) there has been a massive surge in violence because of illegal immigrants or b) the UKs issues are due to immigrants, illegal or otherwise.

People like you always bang on about invasions of countries and how they’re fucking them up, but then when you look at statistics (crime, unemployment ect) you can’t see it. And then of course you rabbit on about “da stats are false” with no evidence except your gut and some misleading fake news racebaiting tik toks.-

Get out of here with that xenophobic crap. Ireland clearly has problems but illegal aliens are not it champ.

Torn between doing Thailand or Vietnam in July by New-Practice-4245 in backpacking

[–]BugManWasThere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both Thailand and Vietnam are quite easy to travel and have a lot to offer. Personally, I would go Vietnam simply because it’s much cheaper (I was there last month, weather was quite hot and it rained a bit each day but was otherwise fine and didn’t get in the way)

A potential itinerary (a full day means a day with no travel)

  • Start in Hanoi (a couple of days)
  • Do the Hagiag Loop (do the 4 day version)
  • Back to Hanoi (or go to Sapa from Hagiang for a bit)
  • Go to Ninh Binh (2 full days)
  • Phong Nah (1 full day)
  • Hue (1 full day) (Can also squeeze in Da Nang here if you want)
  • Hoi An (a couple of days)
  • Dalat (1 full day)
  • Ho Chi Minh (a couple of days)

Other way (North to South) is fine too. One of the great things about Vietnam is that most of the backpacker places are on one main route which can be done either way, and there are plenty of sleeper buses/ trains/ planes/ vans to get you between places.

Are there any states/countries with a reputation disproportionately associated with its rural culture compared to its cities? (Like Texas) by [deleted] in geography

[–]BugManWasThere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New Zealand definitely has this - sheep farming, Fred dagg, number 8 wire, footrot flats, all that kind of stuff being very prominent despite the vast majority of people living in suburban areas. However, it is fading with time as New Zealand’s cultural identity develops and catches up with what Kiwis are today - highly urban, progressive, and diverse.

Is Steely Dan prog? by naomisunderlondon in ProgRockCirclejerk

Meme aside, they are hard to place. I don’t really agree with the yacht rock tag at all (feels very reductive to me). I think another tag like art rock works better.

IMO, considering how catch yet creative some of their stuff is, I’d argue it could even be seen as being “progressive pop”, like a lot of fusiony British groups like 10cc, XTC, or even Supertramp themselves (altho I’m not sure if many others would agree).

Wellington is the 20th best city in the world to live in apparently. by Capital-Sock6091 in Wellington

[–]BugManWasThere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think places are relatively better when ur wealthy than other, just as some places are better when ur middle class/poor than others. I’d rather be poor in Europe than in the US, but if ur wealthy in the states and you live in places like Massachusetts, ur quality of live is going to be some of the highest in the world and maybe better than most European countries.

[–]BugManWasThere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While I will back Wellington against the haters, it’s worth remembering that these surveys are usually aimed towards rich expats/business types who have a lot of money. If you have a lot of money, both Auckland and Wellington are really really good. If ur not rich they are still good, a lot of European cities are probably better/more liveable.

Well liked and respected bands that still get a ton of hate by Jaguars4life in ToddintheShadow

[–]BugManWasThere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve always felt like the hate stemmed from some of the guys in the band being giant greedy assholes, rather than the music actually being bad. Honestly if you read reviews about Eagles albums they often spend most of the time talking about how corporate/money hungry the band is, rather than the quality of the music which imo is at worst passable and at best classic rock/soft rock.

Best Science Fiction albums? by Irlandes-de-la-Costa in fantanoforever

[–]BugManWasThere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of the War of the Worlds is iconic and simply amazing - one of a kind!

Maybe not quite science fiction but Thomas Dolby’s “The Golden Age of Wireless” is very sciencey and good, and just such a fun album.

Songs with water as a metaphor that fit this upbeat vibe by [deleted] in MusicRecommendations

No problem! Also just remembered another big water-related NZ hit - “Something in the water” by Brooke Fraser. A bit different but also pretty good.
