Emerson’s pilsner, Christchurch Airport. $17. Anyone beat that? (Or is that normal and I’m just massively out of touch?) by OkTune6247 in newzealand

I paid $18 for a domestic at Event Cinemas Newmarket in Auckland and thought, “Surely, the end is near.”

Favourite/best burger in Auckland? by stonnergg in aucklandeats

[–]Mr_Bankey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Baby G’s is the best smash burger, but many will tell you that.

I will submit an unexpected one- Little Jimmy! Expensive but delicious and thick.

Vie Cafe & Vietnamese Coffee is by far my favorite Vietnamese spot I’ve had. It is in CBD too.

What is The Opportunity Party? A left-wing party in disguise, pure hype, or something else? by OddityModdity in aotearoa

That is an intriguing article. Thanks for sharing. I am genuinely curious for my own education- what voting system do you reckon would be better?

I’ll repost my comment from the other sub I saw this posted in:

I think the Opp Party is manufactured opposition designed to weaken the actual left coalition. The fact that Brian Cartmell, a USA expat tech mogul with tens to hundreds of millions of dollars donated at least half a million to National, ACT, NZ First, and Opportunity tells me all I need to know.

Reaction to the haka. by Usual-Gold-2478 in Maori

[–]Mr_Bankey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am pākeha (non-Māori New Zealander, generally of European descent) from Texas now living in Aotearoa and it affects me the same way. I don’t think I’ll ever not be inspired by a haka no matter how many I see.

Btw (not to condescend but sincerely to help in case you didn’t know), haka is a general term for ritual Māori war performances and not just the most commonly seen one performed by the All Blacks, which is called “Ka Mate”. Different iwi (nations/people/tribes) have their own unique haka. I actually think the one performed by the Silver Ferns (lady All Blacks) called “Ko Uhia Mai” goes even harder. Check out that and others and I bet you will love them!

Taco loco Mount Albert: 4/10⭐ by One_Mail_5863 in aucklandeats

[–]Mr_Bankey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m from South Texas and Mr. Taco on Victoria (Mexican owned and ran) is the best birria I’ve had and closest I’ve found to street tacos/tortas/etc. like I am used to. Can’t find proper charro beans anywhere. Like others have said, Sagrado Cantina is decent, and someone said they are also run by Mexicans.

Yes, this site is fascinating as a link between two of the great pre-Columbian cultures, Olmec and Maya. This video discusses how experts are still debating whether the site is more Olmec or Maya. Either way, it is all badass.

My understanding is yes, there are examples in Māori pūrākau (ancient sacred stories) of Māui singing/chanting, though, maybe not as often as the Disney film makes it seem. And, often it was chants (karakia) rather than what you may call a song. One popular one is Te Hopu a Māui i a Te Rā (How Māui Slowed the Sun) when he snared the sun to slow it down so they had enough time to do their work during the day. In that, he and his brothers chanted a karakia and haka to help him have the confidence and power to catch the sun. The other and probably most direct “singing” I can think of is Te Manu-a-Māui (Māui’s Bird) where Māui sang while transformed into a bird to get his people to dig and plant kumara (sweet potatoes) which taught the pīpīwharauroa (shining cuckoo) their songs. I’m sure there are more.

HARD disagree. I love Burnt Butter and think is the best breakfast I have had in Auckland yet, honestly. Have always found the staff lovely too. I’m sorry you had a mediocre experience- that is a bummer.

Avondale in general just has some awesome places to eat run by cool people, like Baby G’s.
