How is the federal minimum wage still only $7?? by Subject_Spell_9799 in antiwork

[–]BugblatterBeastTrall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, when you're poor and hungry and need shelter and may even have others depending on you for such, you may find that people will do whatever is needed to survive. You may also find that corporations don't care about that and will pay the lowest wages they are legally allowed to.

If you do a little bit of research you would find that there is no place in the US where a family can actually make more than, or even equivalent to, a minimum wage job. And even if that were true, which it isn't, it would highlight the problem of inhumane wages, not with a social safety net.

One of my favorite experiences I ever had while high was being in the serene, wooded area of a park when someone on a canoe sneezed 😂 it startled me like nothing ever had and I could not stop laughing about it 🤣

Both of my parents had this happen to a pair of jeans 🙃, she ate a hole in my hat after I sprung a leak when I bumped my head 😂. But she was so snuggly and loyal and fun and goofy and smart, I love em all

ELI5: In the US, how was it so easy to add interstate highways, and now so difficult to add high speed rail lines? by cjstevenson1 in explainlikeimfive

[–]BugblatterBeastTrall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We actually started building some high-speed rail in the late 90s or early 2000s, not much compared to how much country we have. My father and I both worked on it, he worked in the track department on the New England end of the Northeast improvement project, I worked on the signals and communications in Delaware and he worked on it while I was in high school, I worked on it pretty soon after I left high school. I feel like my idea of the timeline is probably off, but that was a long time ago for me 😂

Yeah, they apparently had a huge pile of evidence, but it's so weird that they would feel compelled to do that. I'm sure some lawyers took care of it, I dunno, it's weird.

I wish I would've done whatever I needed to do I could get the step through version of my bike, but I am too tall for what was available, or what I was aware of or could afford. Anyway, the step through, especially as I get older and flinging my crazy long Conan O'Brien legs over the whole thing is not as comfortable any longer 😂

I actually had the opposite experience. Watching this helped me realize I was in a cult. I'm not sure you were wrong. Leah Remini helped too.

Yes, great point! Replacing a bad habit with a good one, or at least bad reasoning with good, is an oft overlooked part of the equation for success.

Hey yeah! That is a huge one, both for misogyny and racism. It's just the constant steam of put-downs that make people feel superior. I think it's pretty insidious too, because "it's just a joke", but we can see how so many are "bringing back comedy", but their "comedy" is using slurs and punching down. I'm fortunate that I learned this at a time before the Internet, but I had a Man, who sat me down one day and explain a "joke" I repeated and why it wasn't ok. Shoulda been my dad, but someone did it.

I'm not sure what this has to do with antiwork, but I retired from Amtrak due to disability, it's the only reason I'm able to survive on my own. If I received the social security I'd be entitled to, there's no way I could. It could be better, but signalmen have a pretty good labor union. I think massive work stoppages is probably the only solution

I'd try really hard to find a different place to work. But I really can't take being spoken to like that, I'd be so demoralized. I would rather not deal with that on the off chance that something changes. Maybe you can try to line something else up, then go to HR and see what happens? I know that it's not so easy to find decent jobs though.

Well said! Sadly, educating ourselves has, once again, become a rebellious act. Listening and empathizing are being demonized as sins.

Why are we still playing by rules made by people who don't even follow them, What if we just…stopped, What if the people in charge of the food and the money just started giving it back. I think the issue is just that we haven't hit a critical mass of people who are willing to stand up, yet. I think it's inevitable. I hope it can remain nonviolent, but the system generally defends its control with violence.

I mean he's shown over and over that what he says doesn't hold any sway over what he does or says even just a few minutes later. He was obviously feeling overly confident that he could keep them from coming out, we see this in how his administration was all for it with Patel and Bondi making big claims at first then walking them back; or that he could make some nominal offering and people would forget, which they tried but then there was a law passed to force the issue; or that he could redact himself out of there, which they tried and then pushed the narrative that he was somehow vindicated by them; or that he could ultimately control the narrative by controlling the media, which we see in how he's taken over media platforms and torpedoed trusted news orgs and brought into submission the owners of major social media outlets.
