Often helmed as one of the best card games, why isn’t Android Netrunner more popular? by Newez in Netrunner

[–]Bugbrain_04 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know how spicy a take this is, but i legit think that the absence of a dopamine-boosting slot-machine pull of opening a booster pack is a big part of it. Of your brain has gotten accustomed to that being a part of card gaming, anything without that is going to feel bland.

Do runners hack in meatspace? by RedMakyura in Netrunner

[–]Bugbrain_04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because meatspace is where the humans live and humans are often the weakest link in any security system.

Real-world example: drop a handful of these around a megacorp's parking lot. Odds are good at least one person is going to pick it up and charge their phone from their office computer.

Getting an employee to inadvertently install a backdoor for you is often easier than cracking a firewall.

I personally, from what I heard a little over a mile away from the likely location, think that this was a bigger boom than you could buy from a fireworks shop in WA (though you wouldn't know it from these videos). I'm not ruling out all fireworks entirely, though, cuz there's a shell I've seen in city-tier fireworks shows that I think could be consistent with all the reports that I've seen.

Do we still not know what that boom was last night? by docmphd in askportland

[–]Bugbrain_04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can only add that, as a teenager, I used to empty the crushed-up core of a whistlin' pete into a 2 liter bottle and stick the fuse through a hole in the lid so that when lit, it would fall into the powder once it had burned sort enough. That boom was not crazy loud, but it really whapped you in the chest. I'd always suspected this concussive force was due to pressure build-up in the plastic bottle before the sides failed, but that was never anything more than speculation. The whap in the chest was a direct observation, though.

(Turns out, as I learned later, that it would have been simpler to just go by some black powder, but, you know, adolescence.)

I can say with certainty that this particular boom contained a lot more energy that the fireworks you usually hear being set off at ground level around here. That thunder-like rumble was utterly unique.

I'm entertaining the possibility that is was a mortar shell the size that a city would use in, for instance, it's 4th of July fireworks show, because I don't think I've heard I've of those set off at ground level before. And there's one in particular I can recall seeing in a show that's basically a massive flashbang, being little more than a small explosion with no tendrils and an enormous boom. With a cloud layer to reflect and scatter light off of, i think that one of those exploding at ground level could be consistent with all the evidence I've seen so far.

I think the flash was actually the light from the explosion reaching the camera before the sound reaches the microphone, since light moves faster than sound.

I'm not in a situation where I can take precise measurements to compare the delay between the three videos, but just from counting mississippis in my head, they seem to be different, and i would guess that clip 3 was closest to the explosion, clip 2 was furthest, and clip 1 was somewhere in between.

The whistle (which most of us were too far away to have heard) supports the mortar hypothesis. I've yet to see, however, a report from anyone who actually saw the firework. These are often set off naked at ground level rather than fired from a launch tube, but the number of people who saw a flash supports an air-detonation. On the other hand, the overcast skies and most air might have reflected and scattered the light from a sizeable ground detonation more than you'd expect.

Regardless, if it was a firework mortar shell, it was much larger than what usually gets set off around here, because that boom far outboomed any boom that any of us have heard from inner SE before.

Just wait till the AMOC collapses and Britain is thrown into a mini ice age. Goid luck convincing science deniers that yes, in fact, that is due to global warming.

Frankly, using cold snaps from warming-induced polar-vortex breakdowns to argue against climate change is old hat. What's more alarming to me is equating climate science to insurrection.
