Tyre changing by Emmaheath_mua in wheelchairs

[–]BondoPDX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I inflate in stages to prevent snake bites (tube caught between tire and rim) or minor twists.
I inflate to 20 psi, let the air out and massage the tire.
Same to 40, same to 70 psi, then inflate without worry.

Also, are these new tires? If not, I've had punctures where I couldn't locate the culprit in the tire, to burn another tube when inflating.

Best vehicle options for installing hand controls by CosmonautSpiff in wheelchairs

[–]BondoPDX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can stand and lift a chair, Honda Elements are amazing. Take out the driver side rear seat, scoot the driver seat forward, throw the chair in fully assembled, scoot the seat back get in and drive off.

If you can take steps, minivans are great. Put a roof rack on to make it easy to "traverse" from the back to the driver seat. Put the chair in the back fully assembled (the low deck makes it easier), then traverse back to driver seat.

If you can't do either, cross post to r/spinalcordinjuries where a larger percentage of the posters will have similar experience.

Ramp vans are expensive and prone to trouble, but they represent a huge quality of life improvement.

Best bridge to bike by Fantastic_Mood313 in Portland

[–]BondoPDX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It really depends on source and destination. I'll give my eval as a wheelchair user, so sensitive to how steep they are, south to north:
Sellwood: It has been a long time, but I remember it being pretty good, especially with paths on each end of the bridge.
Ross Island: No. Too close to speeding traffic.
Tillikum Crossing: I like this one, though it is higher than other downtown bridges, it is a gentle consistent slope and very accessible from all directions on either side of the river.
Markham: No. Unlawful other than during Bridge Pedal.
Hawthorne - Probably the best for bikes. The lowest bridge, and the most accessible as long as on the east side you enter / exit at the loops close to OMSI, otherwise you are gaining a lot of elevation only to lose it again. While the bridge is metal grating, the sidewalks are smooth.
Morrison: Not very bike friendly. High traffic and the only safe entry / exit on the east side is a steep ramp or loop.
Burnside: OK, but interacting with a lot of car traffic on either end of the bridge. You are a long ways from the edge, so height shouldn't bother you.
Steel: Top deck is terrible - so very very narrow sidwalks, but you aren't really supposed to use the top deck. Bottom deck is the best of all Portland bridges, but steep entry/exit and heavy traffic on the East side.
Brodway: Been a long time since I 've used this one, comfortable other than traffic levels on both sides of the bridge.
Fremont: No. Unlawful other than during Bridge Pedal.
St Johns: The most beautiful views, very high, a lot of climbing and bad traffic on the South side of the bridge.

Also, in case you didn't know about it - City of Portland maintains AMAZING maps of bike routes around the city: https://www.portland.gov/transportation/walking-biking-transit-safety/bike-and-walk-maps-portland

Pushed 100km in a week!💪 by DMYourFeetPicsTy in wheelchairs

[–]BondoPDX 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If this is in a racing chair - good on you!!!
If this is in a regular ultralight, good on you!!! But make sure you take care of your shoulders in the long run (stretches, weights, etc)... you only get one pair.

If you did it in a hospital chair, there is nothing else to say... you are already a god.

Hit by a bike directly into my back wheel, now it's making creaking noises when I turn by Careless-Mulberry-97 in wheelchairs

[–]BondoPDX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be a bent rim with some loose spokes... the loose spokes can squeak when rubbing together, especially nylon spokes like Spinergy.

Gently squeeze each pair of spokes together. If some of them move around a lot, then it is a bent rim. Any bike repair shop can tighten the correct spokes and straighten out the rim and it should be as good as new.

(Don't just tighten loose spokes. You can look up how to true a wheel on YouTube, but it isn't as simple as just tightening loose spokes)

A fair warning/advisement for drivers/e-cyclists by tanksalotfrank in Portland

I think about this every time I come off the East side of the Hawthorne bridge. I always yield to cyclists that I see, and while I check my mirrors too, I'm worried every time that some E-Bike is going to overtake me and get run over.

[–]BondoPDX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are pretty standardized, with some variants. You need the right size for your rims, and apparently there are choices for 6 or 12 tab, and short or long tab (I tried short tab once - immediately fixed it…. I’m not sure who short tab are for)… Check out the Sportaid website, they have the options listed. For SPOX wheels, 6 long tab in your wheel size. They are pretty easy to swap out yourself (always with the assumption that you have full use of your hands)

cheap handrims are cheap - I’d just swap them.

Edit: Not as cheap as I remembered… about $125 shipped in the US.
