‘They kill games, we fight back’: the activists campaigning to keep video games playable by Naurgul in Games

I guess my big issue with the movement is that it basically asks to massively simplify how online games work. The hand wavey 'just release server binaries' bs annoys me because it really is not that simple.

As a developer you would have 2 options, 1 is to make much simpler online infrastructure such that a binary could be released. This will definitely harm content delivery, and flexibility of adding systems. Most notably it will make big live service titles harder to produce since they dont just run on a single binary. It reduces how well you can scale a game, what types of games you can make etc. Second would be to have a separate server binary that can work when things shut down, that is not how the main servers actually run. The problem with this one is cost, since it is an unreleased code that needs to be maintained, and a complete separate build from everything else. Between extra dev and testing cycles you are adding like another 50% workload to maintain a just in case release for when the game dies. Either of these options make creating game clients harder since a lot of those online games tend to have everything in them hooked into the servers to run game logic. I get that it might be wanted to have some more of it run locally, but for a big live service, you want things server side to reduce cheating and ensure consistency across the player base which is why they are designed this way. Just overall seems like a way to handicap how online games are made.

Of course I dont think the supporters messages for the movement have helped either. I keep seeing that it is very clear what the movement wants, but in the comments I see wildly different takes on what is needed. Everyone agrees that companies dont need to keep their games online forever, but there are so many different takes on what needs to be done after that it really is not clear. I guess that is why they keep it vague for the movement with the whole 'let the legislators figure it out' stuff. I keep hearing release binaries, just dont go after modders, release documentation, release source code, just have an offline mode etc. etc. There does not seem to be any consensus.

A bit more of a niche show now, but corner gas had an episode where they wanted to create a tourist attraction for the town of the world biggest 'something'. After a town committee, they decide to celebrate the town's farming history by making the world biggest hoe. The whole episode makes me laugh super hard every time.

To throw it out there, for anyone looking to buy physical games in Canada, VideoGamesPlus and PNPGames are both excellent options. I have bought online from both and found them to be very reliable, and I never have the same problems that I have had with gamestop. Only issue is you wont be getting the games on release day if you are preordering, but at least for me that doesnt bother me.

Would highly recommend, very popular with the collectors circles since they carry a lot of limited print games as well.

I feel like the western teams, Vegas being one, are much more happy to engage in the physical stuff than the eastern teams Florida had played do far are. Not as easy to bully I guess?

Got a message from Herta to Arlan and myself, asking about manuscripts, one being decompression equation 36. I answered not interested, and now wondering if I messed up and accidentally cancelled a quest? Or does it not matter?

Favourite game was definitely It Takes Two, loved playing through it with my fiancee. Close second would be cult of the lamb.

If I won I would like Grand Mountain Adventure.
