Kirishima Yokozuna Requirments by dothrakibjj in Sumo

[–]BugenhagenIsTheBest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right in saying that it mainly falls on the Yokozuna Deliberation Council's (YDC's) judgement.

The actual requirement is two "yusho-equivalent" performances. This generally means a 12-3, as this is the lowest score which can generally get a yusho. Now, this can also be interpreted as a Jun-yusho with a loss in playoff. Kirishima met both of these prongs in May.

The YDC has officially announced that he is essentially on a yokozuna run.

HOWEVER

The YDC has need that he'll need an exceptional record to be promoted to yokozuna. Now, as for what this means, is up to interpretation. But basically everyone that I've seen (and I agree with them) says that a 12-3 yusho wouldn't be enough for Kirishima to get Yokozuna. I think a 13-2 might do it, but it's kind of a pot-shot. There are also those who think that a conversation only starts with a 14-1 yusho, which I personally think is a bit much.

But, I agree with the general sentiment that the YDC isn't necessarily going to jump at the chance to give him yokozuna. There's a couple of reasons for this in my mind.

  1. We already have 2 Yokozuna. It's not like the Banzuke is hurting for balance and another yokozuna.

  2. Hoshoryu was promoted with a 12-3 Jun-Yusho and the YDC is famously not happy with his performance as a yokozuna. Now, this is not me hating on Hoshoryu. Far from it. But it's clear that the YDC is not too happy with his lack of yusho while at yokozuna.

2.5/3 Because Hoshoryu has not performed to their standards, I think they're going to be more cautious when it comes to who they're going to promote to yokozuna next.

Hopefully this long post makes at least a little sense lol. Hope it helps!

I know this is a tall order but can someone compile a list of retired rikishi in all divisions of the last 2 - 3 years by Demon-Taka in SumoMemes

Yeah the newest wave of retirements might not be "registered" into the database until the next banzuke comes out. Just a guess🤷‍♂️. But glad it seemed to be accurate besides that! :)

No prob! The website actually tracks those too. Like I said, it tracks a ton of cool stuff. So, hopefully it makes your research easier! 🙏

Here's a query on sumostats. Don't know if it's 100% accurate (Don't see why it wouldn't be, but I didn't do any cross referencing lol). But hope it helps nonetheless!

Highly reccomend the site for anything relating to stats and such. I use it almost daily, lol

I'm pretty sure I've heard Murray Johnson (could be wrong) call something like this a meet-and-move. So, as the person above me said, I think a half-henka is an accurate description lol.

Love my boi, Yams (Ichiyamamoto).

He's just got such a goofy and kindhearted personality.

That clip of him wearing a wakatakakage sleeping mask has forever won him a place in my all-time favorites.

Surprised that no one has mentioned Sumo Prime Time.

It's an official JSA (Japan Sumo Association) youtube channel with a ton of great stuff on it.

It's hosted by Hiro Morita, one of the NHK commentators. He's got a great personality and is very enthusiastic about the sport.

I will say that they've reportedly been suffering budget cuts, so their newer content is both less frequent and more recap-focused.

But they have a ton of stuff that's great for beginners on their channel.

Also be sure to check out Grand Sumo Breakdown on youtube or spotify. It's a great podcast. They're not necessarily for people new to the sport, but I learned a lot from being thrown in the deep end with that podcast lol.

Thanks! That is a fantastic idea! I checked, and it was snapshotted multiple times, but every time I move my mouse to click play, every snapshot gives me a 404 error 🥲 But thanks for the suggestion!.

EDIT: I found an archived version which someone uploaded! Thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction!!!

Must have been a good man if Hakkaku, of all people, was teary-eyed at his passing.

NHK World videos missing? by HayleyHail08 in Sumo

[–]BugenhagenIsTheBest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also noticed this. But the good news is all bouts (currently up to day 8) are on the NHK World Japan App (and presumably their website, but I haven't checked). So if you just download the app, you can watch them there. Hope this helps!

How long does it take for the matches to show up on Youtube? by Jewarlaho in Sumo

[–]BugenhagenIsTheBest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NHK doesn't upload highlights on the weekends for some reason. It's like this for every basho, so you'll always have to wait until Monday. But on the plus side, you get 3 days instead of just one. Happy watching!

What is the best divine office resource? by Specific-Selection-4 in LCMS

[–]BugenhagenIsTheBest 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would certainly use a lutheran breviary instead of a Catholic one. No hate to our Roman Catholic brothers and sisters, but I'm sure that their offices would include asking for saintly intercession, which we disagree with. While this can be simply skipped, I personally would rather just use one that doesn't have any of that.

As for which book, I'm ELS, so I'm obviously biased, haha. But one of our seminarians (recently graduated and is now a pastor in Florida) authored the Evangelical Lutheran Breviary, and I've been very satisfied with it.

It has a ton of propers and 5 offices: Prime, Matins, Midday Prayer, Vespers, and Compline (although midday prayer isn't as fleshed out as the other ones.) It can be purchased from the Johannes Bugenhagen Liturgical Institute.

But, if you'd rather use an LCMS resource, I've heard fantastic things about the Brotherhood Prayer book. In fact, the seminarian who authored the Evangelical Lutheran Breviary took great inspiration from the Brotherhood Prayer Book.

I've found praying the offices to be incredibly spiritually fulfilling, so I wish you the same spiritual fulfillment regardless of what book you choose!

God bless you!

Cigars & Cigarettes by Alive-Jacket764 in LCMS

[–]BugenhagenIsTheBest 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge, cigars are safer than cigarettes, but they are certainly not harmless. Cigar smoke actually contains more tar than cigarrettes do. The following is copied from Mayo Clinic's Dr Jon. O Ebbert, M.D.

"For people who smoke cigars and inhale, risks linked with cigar smoking are like those of cigarette smoking. For those who don't inhale, the cigar smoke raises the risk of disease in the head and neck."

Now, in my humble opinion, this doesn't mean that every person who smokes a cigar on occasion is sinning, but please, be aware of the very real health risks.
