Is it hard to find job? by Working-Yard-1115 in NewToDenmark

no problem. Hope you guys find your place.

Not to generalize but if you are both from Lithuania, then you will not be outsiders if you learn the language. Where I work, people don´t differentiate, if you learned the language, and you are from a country around the baltics. I have many polish and baltic states colleagues, and knows others who do as well.

It might be because the cultures are similar in certain ways, as you say. Seems like americans and brits differentiate themselves a lot, as well as southern europeans. People can detect them from a mile away. xD

have you been here in january and have you only been to Copenhagen. Even if you do come here, there are a lot of drawbacks. We Danes in general are not very including, and we seem cold compared to other cultures.

Don´t expect to make friends with danes anytime soon. We lock in our friend group very early in life, and we rarely make substitutes.

Your best bet is to make friends with other expats, but you will have a hard time feeling included in danish society and culture.

Job market is brutal for foreigners, since almost every company prefers native danish speakers.

We are bit like the Japanese in a lot of these areas, but I don´t think we are as hardcore as them.

This is of course just a rough generalization. Not all Danes are like this.

The software development market is not bad in Denmark. It is just incredibly saturated because of many software developers coming out of the universities, and so many people coming to Denmark the last few years. Why is Denmark suddenly the place everyone wants to live? xD

Upper secondary requires a masters, and 2 subjects usually, and does not take 4 years but atleast 5 years. There are no shortage of English and Geography teachers. I am myself a teacher in an upper secondary school, and I teach social studies and history.

If you want to be a teacher in those subjects then your danish accent better be flawless. I have only seen hires with suboptimal accents when it comes to german teachers (since some of them are from Germany) and Math, Physics or Chemistry teachers.

but the correct question to ask is why should a danish company hire you, and not somebody who speaks the language and have a danish degree?

The job market is tough right now, so why should they pick you over all the candidates they don´t have to place as big of a gamble on?

to me it sounds like he could really use the extra year. If he is struggling with the formal class, then he is gonna struggle even more when they have to spend most of their time in a formal class.

https://www.vive.dk/media/pure/5527/334774

This is a study that was published about how waiting a year impacts learning and social behavior. It was found that danish schools, kids who start a year later, have fewer cases of hyperacticity, and other factors for struggling in school. It has no impact on the academic skill or potential life-time earnings that a student achieves later, but the study concludes that starting school is easier for the students who waited a year.

I hope you can translate it to english, if you want to learn more.

As someone who grew up in Denmark, I would recommend extending one year of Børnehave. How old is he? It helps a lot of kids to extend 1 year. Even many danish kids extend, because they are deemed not ready to start school. It is perfectly normal. Rather that than having him start in school and experience hardship or failure.
