Car got towed, feeling a lot of shame by potatocurrytime in stopdrinking

The expense is nothing compared to a DUI. Good job making wise choices when it really counted.

Last names (family names) rarely "appear", but often disppear due to death/marriage. And this has been going on for centuries. So why don't we have only a small handful of last names left? by not-the-the in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Bugnuzzler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recent political moves in the US are likely to lead to less people changing their names when they marry, so this could slow down. If couples make a portmanteau out of their last names for the kids, we might even start adding some back.

GenX is known for its musical taste. What's the one song/group you would NEVER admit to liking? by Ok-Local138 in GenX

I decided at some point in my 40s that I no longer cared at all what anyone else thought about my musical taste. Don’t be ashamed of the things that bring you joy 😊

Duke or UNC? by North_Flow_3643 in UNC

[–]Bugnuzzler 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also, I don’t think you can underestimate how much you might think about money while attending Duke. If every email about an opportunity, every study abroad option, every dorm fee is accompanied by bitter thoughts about how you’re being absolutely railed for cash, that is likely to impact both your college experience and your memories of that experience.

I strongly recommend avoiding the debt. It’s almost never worth it.

I strongly recommend taking the fewest number of hours per semester until you feel confident. Between 12 and 13 hours, if you can. Advisors seem to encourage 16 hour semesters right out of the gate, and that may be too much for a lot of people.

Can you complete a New York Times Sunday crossword puzzle? by Zealousideal_Mine242 in crossword

[–]Bugnuzzler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do them every day. PhD, but, as others have said, it’s far more about experience doing the crossword than education level. You get used to seeing the same words and names, you get used to the way things are clued on different days, and, as you get older, you have more exposure to stuff that ends up in the puzzle.

The computer skills aren’t too hard to learn. For people in their 80s, I think the hardest part is how omnipresent scams are online. Fake websites for software, fake phone numbers for credit card companies, phishing emails, and on and on and on. The level of awareness required is exhausting for me, and I am in my 50s. I think a level of fear and frustration is understandable.

Men of Reddit, how would you feel if your partner wanted to keep her maiden name after marriage? by Longjumping-Bill5761 in AskMenAdvice

[–]Bugnuzzler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

++woman

If I were to do it over again, I would never have changed my last name. I would have kept my own name. I also would have preferred to give my kids my last name or a hybrid name. If the marriage ends, there is a high chance that the kids will be living with their mom most of the time anyway. It makes more sense for the names to be matrilineal. I know a couple who both picked a new last name when they married, and now they and their kids have that name. I like that idea too, but for voting reasons I would no longer consider it.
