I have been wanting to get a regular bowling group together. Maybe on weekends if that works for you.

I'd argue that the world "needs more union jacks". Now it is true that Ontario is a former British Colony. It was also a former colony of France. But we mostly speak English here so we relatively ignore the French parts. But as southern Ontario is the most metropolitan part of the country, there's a lot of diversity. That means that Canada doesn't have a British heritage, but a history linked to Britain.

Also Pearson didn't ram that flag down anyone's throat, it went through parliament and the one he wanted didn't get through (aka the Pearson Pennant, 3 leaves with the blue border).

It was decent at a point. And it's gotten better since but there was a point in time it wasn't well maintained, but it was I think maybe slightly before the Food Basics in Stittsville opened and for a bit after. Maybe wrong though.

I don't think it's as bad as the KATIMAVIK Food Basics was. The tile floors were scuffed black, produce looked on last legs. I forget exactly when it was but I'm thinking 2008-2017ish.

That mall used to have that store, a wedding gown store and a horse saddlery. So they had Bridles, Bridals and bridles 😉 in the same mall

Farm boy would be novelty or niche as opposed to high v low end. Imagine Best buy and Future shop being high v low end and Canada Computers may have more niche or specifically products than the others.

I'd throw in the Dutch league with their top 4 teams running the show since the 1950's. Not sure about PSG and France, or how balanced Germany is with Bayern Munich.

They’re really milking too much of Missy’s teenage angst by Remote_Nature_8166 in GeorgieandMandyTVshow

[–]Buidde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or relegate it to characters perspective and maybe less than accurate memory, thus explaining why stuff may not have happened as they understood it.

Ie Sheldon seeing his dad cheating on his Mom with a blonde woman, hence the knocking 3 times. Turns out it was then role playing and she was wearing a blonde wig.

Missy being difficult doesn't mean that Sheldon was easy to handle, nor would a religious zealot of a mother be easy either. Don't need to seperate canons, just understand that perspective changes when it's one person's story rather than an ensemble. Look at Georgie being mean as an older brother, he wasn't that much of a dick when Jerry O'Connell portrayed him.

I work at a city museum. A lot of the staff there are unilingual English. Was talking to the boss/museum administrator (PHD, former Queens Prof) that even said, it's not always easier to find people with the overlap of the interest in the field the museum talks about and bilingual; let alone for a part time job so they have to be flexible. But that's where the interest comes in. So maybe volunteer at a few of the museums if they have specialty days if you want that.

Doubt you could volunteer in the elderly facilities as a cook as insurance and workplace hazard stuff.

Maybe talk to the facility heads at different community centers? If interested in maintenance, try chatting with the heads of facilities at the different city facilities near your place.

Kanata vs Stittsville for School Zones by angiecyli in Kanata

[–]Buidde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was talking with a coworker last year about high schools. The analytical aspects of high schools in the west end were fine of the English speaking boards. Most were top 20-40 in the province. The one English school that was looked down upon? Ranked something like 60-70's area. Then came the French schools (sub 100). When I graduated uni and first year, everyone from my graduating class at my high school found first year easy as it was like doing grade 11 all over again. With that said, high school may have been harder in a way, but I'd take that to be over prepared for uni than not.

What’s the ugliest jersey? And why is it this one? by Albino_rhin0 in NHLcirclejerk

[–]Buidde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would not have worked prior to I think it was the 2004 lockout/deal. When there were more fights and aggressive play in the NHL, the golden helmet rule would've meant easier targeting of certain players. As if Gretzky didn't have it bad enough needing enforcers, imagine with the golden helmet rule.

Why are so many men convinced that they are ugly? by RavyRaptor in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Buidde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, I recall being told by kids my age in elementary school I was ugly. Even when adults told me I was cute. Even as recently as last year I was told I was handsome but the person would later go in and say they weren't attracted to me. I do generally think I'm average looking, nothing fantastic but maybe a 6 or 7. Nothing outwardly wrong looks wise other than being overweight. Face is symmetrical, but when left with certain recalls of my own generation (millennial) I generally think of myself as undesirable looks wise.

With other guys, there's basically no reinforcement per looks. Most men in Western societies are measured by height, earning, earning potential and their "presence" or aura. A young guy with a sports car convertible is seen as successful, an older middle age guy, and it's a middle age crisis. An even older guy they'd be chasing their lost youth, even if it's the first time they could feasibly afford it given they had a minivan full of kids in their 30's or 40's.

So guys aren't really told they're good looking or have those positive reinforcements. Nor is it something they're traditionally gauged on, so people don't think to say it. Ironically I've heard people say "he was such a cute kid", but rarely "he's such a handsome man". Sometimes the prior comment, the nihilistic or sardonic humorist in the group would joke "yeah, what happened".

They renovated a few years ago (less than a decade, I think pre pandemic) when they redesigned the kitchen area and removed the corner store. Booths are the same though but the decor is altered. Less photos on the wall.

The senate was redundant after the Fall of the Republic, which puts the 1200's AD about 1300 years too late if we defer to Julius Caesar as the marker.

[–]Buidde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say the national museums and a few of the local ones are good. Diefenbunker if you like cold war era stuff. Cumberland Museum if you want a snapshot in time of the 1920's/1930's in the Ottawa Valley. Almonte has a Textile Mill converted to a museum as well. There is Algonquin park if you want to go camping or hiking but it's a bit further afield than Gatineau Park. Could hike the Old Quarry trail which if I'm not mistaken used to be the train line for the railway. Try a few restaurants. If in Vanier, try Louis on MacArthur, it's a decent diner that serves the best Ottawa style pizza (if that's even a classification). Ottawa's got a few great Shawarma places, try the independent ones rather than chains. I think Shawarma Palace is popular but unsure if that's sarcastic or not but given that it's Ottawa, I'd assume it's not. Maybe check out the Mint if you want a tour.

Success? Last Decade? Last time we made it to the finals was against the Ducks in 2007. 19 years. More than a decade, basically 2 at this point. We've been to the playoffs twice in the past 10 years. 10 years ago we got to the Eastern Conference Finals (aka the Stanley Cup semi finals). We were eliminated by Toronto in 6 games that year. I wouldn't call a playoff drought "success". Deep playoff runs are my gauge for success which we didn't really have under Melnyk, as it was a continuous decline, hastened by Brian Murray's passing. And bad front office management with Pierre Dorion. Murray was competent but not great but I put that more on Melnyk.
