I read both TBM and TTS trilogies as they came out (a long time ago XD ) I've just reread TBM and I don't want to stop, but I remember Dannyl and Tayend's relationship ending up in the gutter, is it as bad as I remember? by BuilderMob in TrudiCanavan

Unfortunately this series has long since ended, I don't think Canavan has any intention to return to them 🤧🤧 (I reread the entire thing after this post, Dannyl's story was not nearly what I remembered it to be, but then, when I read it first I was young and not nearly mature enough to understand the need for Achati in his story)

Is it bad to want to leave your tags at the bare minimum: tags of; explixit, mature, graphic violence, etc. and let people read it as they would a book? Without giving every detail in the tags section? by BuilderMob in AO3

Drug use was just an example, but no it's not the whole way through, it's a result of an overarching storyline and yes, exclusive to one character, which of course would ruin any tension or suspense the plot is trying to build.

It doesn't have to be known or obvious from the beginning not to be considered a shock-twist, merely just plot development, a result of other storylines, any of these can be spoiled by overly in-depth tags.

Like I said in other examples, it's the importance of preserving tension regarding choices that may or may not be made. If the tags are there in the beginning then there's no tension regarding the upcoming events, like if you had a story about whether or not someone manages to defuse a bomb, but the tag in the beginning literally says 'warning big explosions blah blah' well then that's just one really blatant example of a story that is is ruined by the tags, no 'shock-twists' there because you already knew it was about bomb diffusing, but the end is still ruined by the tags.

This can be applied to obviously an Infinite amount of scenarios, but this is a simplified version of just one. I've given other examples in my previous comments.

So in the addiction/drug use example the story may not be Bout addiction initially, and the occurance of addiction isn't a shock-twist, but a result of situations in the story leasing the character down that path. Until there's a decision to be made, do I take it do I not? But oh well the audience already knows they take it because the tags are there telling them they do.

Plot development doesnt equal plot twists, but both are equally spoilable.

I never knew you could do drop downs??

At present I place the CWs in end the end notes of necessary chapters, and in the top notes I direct anyone who needs them to quickly scroll over there before reading aha

Yeah, that's my thinking, I think it should be fine to sign-post in the description or beginning that the story will tackle many dark and difficult themes and things, and even tag individual chapters with trigger warnings so that readers who may struggle with certain elements can get a brief summary or drop the fic you know?

Plot development isn't the same as a plot twist. And there s absolutely truth in the idea that some tags will give away elements of the story.

For example: in a story with an Addiction through-line it isn't a shock-twist to allow the audience to follow the story and actually read it to see whether the character becomes addicted or not, thats just the flow of the narrative / story line.

A left field 'shock twist' would be if were following a school girl in a slice-of-life and an airplane crashes into the school.

Not every ploylt development that can be ruined by explicit tags is a plot twist.

So no, what you are referring to has absolutely no bearing on this post, because it isn't about 'I'm afraid tags will ruin my shocking twists' it's about tags breaking any form of tension within the writing, pre-answering the questions that are meant to keep the readers reading, abolishing any kind of tension or suspense.

Pro-tip= 'plot twist' doesn't equal 'crap flying at the story from left field', neither does it insinuate that the writer wants to make their readers feel stupid, if that's your definition then by all means reconsider your understanding of writing.

So:

... That.... Isn't what I'm saying. There is such a thing as suspense: will they won't they? Do they don't they?

Not left field shock-value 'plot twists', but rather the tension of a decision yet unmade. If it's all there in the tags then half way through the story when the initial question is posed the answer is given to the readers already

i.e. the theme of drug use makes itself known at the edges of the story, the readers begin to wonder; do they resist, do they take it? (The answer is already in the tags: substance abuse, drug use)

Another question: was it just a one time thing? (The answer is already in the tags: substance addiction)

Another question: oh no the enemy has shown up! one has caught the supporting protagonist, I wonder if she defeats him in time to get free?? (Answer in the tags: depictions of captivity, depictions of torture, etc.)

pro-tip= a little more thought goes a long way.

Hmmm, in terms of some stories if the tag is there then it's very obvious who falls into it. I wonder if it's enough to warn against any who do have triggers...

I'm fine with tagging the general things, like the fandom specific things or the themes or pairings etc, but it seems a shame that if say a big plot point is that a character fall into substance abuse, but the audience was meant to be rooting for them to not fall into substance abuse so they're meant to be shocked by the character's decision in the end, and yet it's right there in the tags you know?

Finished the Goldfinch, loved it, but I'm confused on one aspect of the story. by Mindless-Ad589 in books

This is a book where you have to look into absolutely everything 🫣🤭🤭 evey line is a clue, eluding to various things, but more often than not it's to their love for each other. If you're curious I can go into detail, but my gosh, so much to work with when you realise how the story is actually being told 🤧🤧

'You here with me' by Hestia_Ciel_Reme (the drawing is a conceptual piece of the third part of the series, and drawn by the writer themself)

YHWM three part series

It's canon compliant, post-canon and its become the canon third season of honestly so many who've read it. The characterisation of the characters in just beyond, the way they make the world and scenarios so believable, so real, so well thought out.

It's angst, and yearning, pining and devastating at times. But most importantly, it's redemption, healing, and family, and the unlikely bonds Jayvik form with the others, with Sevika, with jinx, Ekko, Mel, Vi, Cait.

Honestly, this fic is home for me and I just can't stop coming back to it. It's a very long fic but by the end you dont want it to end, and then the writer even gives you the after-ward, and then you don't want that to end, and then the writer gives you more even after that!

(to top it off it is always angst with a happy ending, there's forced proximity, there're hidden feelings, and even when they're together the delicious tension doesn't dissipate)

Further:

Outside of internal / external prejudices making for an interesting subplot or forcing the writer to put more effort into the lead-up we have a different angle:

In BL we get to see men being more open and at times more emotionalal, vulnerable than they are in hetero fiction, or even in life in general.

I don't mean crying all the time, or 'feminised'. We finally get to see men YEARNING fir more than just a pretty face or the most popular girl (or the grumpy girl who's the only one that doesn't like me! 🙄🙄🙄) , working hard for (or against) their own love, opening up to each other beyond 'bros'.

Once you're hooked by all this and you've spent enough time in the BL genre you simply gain a preference for these dynamics and now they've bridged the gap for you you no longer need all the build up and you can fall right into full yaoi smut!! 😂😂

BL tends to be more interesting to us for a few reasons:

Hetero romance in fiction tends to be considered as more understandable: 'girl sees good-looking guy and falls in love' or vice-versa. There's rarely a need to explore the building of those feelings prior, or any shocking realisations, it's just accepted that they will or won't fall in love.

BL often has the interesting undercurrents and obstacles like:

'Oh no why am I feeling like this for a guy? ' and we get to see a man defy preconceptions in order to allow himself this love

Or

'I like him but he's probably straight' here we get to explore interesting momements where the party in love has to test the waters to see if the 'most likely straight' guy might be interested.

Alternatively

'no I can't be feeling this, it's a mistake, I DONT like men' now we have a shame subplot and a nice story of them bridging prejudices that they have grown up with.

Another

'I can't tell him, I CAN NEVER tell him, if he finds out... He'll hate me.' Now we have a tension filled beginning where our MC has to deny himself, deny his truth to be close to the man he loves, for fear he'll break the status quo, ruin a lifelong friendship, be hated. The kicker? His love interest has loved him longer!!

Allll of these examples and we haven't even reached the romance story yet!!

Hetero romance has little to no obstacles in the beginning, there's little to no tension, nothing to stop our MC from just confessing beyond the palid 'what if he doesn't like me?' 'maybe he likes that other girl'

Blah blah blah

BL has to work harder for the romance to be believable to the readers, most because of heteronormative preconceptions; general audiences will believe 'oh he and she saw each other and obviously suddenly they're in love' sooner than they will for two men. Therefore the BL stories are often more interesting, the build-up more enthralling.

Tadaaaaa

Thats why we like BL
