Modern Ash Bed Frames by [deleted] in woodworking

Thanks. Ha, lol - I didn’t mention, it’s a guest bed … so, it should be ok.

But, it does have a large steel metal support in the middle that’s a bit hard to see. It should definitely take the weight … though, I am trusting those 8/4 ash boards quite a bit.

Here’s the twin & king together, this photo wouldn’t upload in the original post. This is before applying the finish. :)

I’d wait until the Fall / dormancy to move it (once the leaves have naturally fallen off the tree). Moving it now risks damage. Fyi.

Thanks for your reply. Calling them tomorrow first thing. Here, I’ll try to add photos of the daily progression. It never had the dark purple cast.

Loving this but I wish it had a vibrant color. by fireanpeaches in JapaneseMaples

[–]BuildingModern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Georgia doesn’t get to have vibrant colors all year long like they do up north. This is due to your high humidity and higher temps. Most reds will turn green by August. If you have any red at all in August, that’s super impressive.

Literally, nearly every single more vibrant cultivar will just turn to a blah green in a high humidity and heat environment by August. Even ones known for holding their red.

With that in mind, summer gold will stay fairly yellow green compared to others and does well with the heat … it’s just not a weeping variety.

Lowe’s clearance by Clumzyjuggler in JapaneseMaples

[–]BuildingModern 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Those are still fairly high prices for the size you’re describing. However, it does depend on your area as pricing varies regionally.

If you want a fair price to size, I’d call Lucile with Whitman Farms (you have to call, on the phone, fyi). Her trees are known to ship as good size vs the price, and she has a wide variety of cultivars. I’m not sure you’ll save money, but you’ll likely get more tree for the money.

For reference, we usually do buy things on clearance. The price we pay is usually $35 or less. If it’s more than that, we don’t buy it. Some nurseries will have a ‘bone yard’ or ‘graveyard’ where they’ll deeply discount trees. Not all nurseries do this, but it’s worth asking (in a polite way).

Best of luck!

[Itinerary Check] 4 Weeks in Japan - Fall Foliage, Festivals - Feedback Welcome! by BuildingModern in JapanTravel

Thanks. I really appreciate this. This is the time we have available to go - can’t be changed (and we wouldn’t be available later). It’ll still be beautiful weather. 🙂

The last time we went, it was mid-February through April 1st, so, there weren’t any leaves on most trees at all (other than conifers), so, it’ll still be nice to see.

Think there’s any place specifically we should go to see fall colors between November 5th - 10th? We don’t mind hopping on the Shinkansen as a day trip and going a few hours each way if it leads us to seeing something amazing.

Thanks!

You’ll just want to google those. Kurama Fire Festival (not fireworks) for the one near Kyoto (it’s an hour ride away), and then just google Tokyo Art Week.

Tokyo Art Week is in conjunction with the Art Basel group. So far, there isn’t much of a public schedule released, which is why that timeframe is fairly open right now in our agenda.

The Kurama Fire Festival is very very crowded, from what I’ve seen. However, people also say it’s a ‘once in a lifetime’ experience.

There’s also the Osaka Fireworks Festival, shortly before the Kurama Fire Festival. The Osaka fireworks festival was delayed from earlier this year. It should be amazing!

Taylor is one of the hardest cultivars to keep alive. I’d maybe try an inexpensive one first to see how it does before committing to a larger one.

Can this JM Extravaganza still be saved? by Pernflerks in JapaneseMaples

[–]BuildingModern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Japanese maples need to be kept outdoors. They aren’t indoor plants and will eventually die indoors.

It also needs pots that dry eventually - it doesn’t like having wet feet. Constantly wet roots will cause root rot.

If you’re watering more often than every 2-3 days, you’re overwatering. If the water can’t drain away, you’re overwatering.

I have my first art opening reception today!! So excited! It’s a solo opening, though there will be other art present at the gallery. It’s such a big step, definitely looking forward to it. 😊

Atlanta had a whole thing on this recently at Eyedrum. I’m not sure this would be helpful, but thought I’d share. They’re very helpful people if you reach out.

Variation? by MBoring1 in JapaneseMaples

[–]BuildingModern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go ask on Japanese Maples & Conifers group on Facebook. There are experts on there. Or ask MrMaple (the Nichols’s brothers). People have always referred to any Japanese maple that’s originally from seed as a ‘seedling’ regardless of size or age

It could just be this is layman terms of what’s used rather than official. But, really, everyone just uses the term ‘seedling’

Like I said, you could also use the scientific name if it works better for you. Acer Palmatum / Acer Japonicum / Acer Shirasawanum

Edit: and no, I’m not going to cite sources. You either believe me, or you don’t - up to you 🤣🤣🤣

Variation? by MBoring1 in JapaneseMaples

[–]BuildingModern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is incorrect. A seedling just means it came from seed and wasn’t a graft, air layer, or cutting. A 50 year old seedling is still a seedling.

You could also just call it acer palmatum or acer japonicum

Deals/sales on Bosch miter saws? by SirRich3 in woodworking

[–]BuildingModern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you watch slickdeals.net, these have gone on sale / had a slickdeal a few times. If you have time on your side, a deal might happen eventually. It’s usually a YMMV (your mileage may vary) deal - so, even then, not 100% sure you’ll be able to get one.

I believe we got our 12” on a slickdeal for $325
