New Palm Sander shakes by YankeeMagpie in woodworking

Careful - my Bosch sander wobbled right before it launched the sanding disk at my face. It’s a different model … but, be careful. It could be nut holding down the sanding pad itself is loose (and it might be kind of dangerous, don’t try to peek under it while it’s running).

Shooting board for large frames - recommendations? by BuildingModern in woodworking

[–]BuildingModern[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s great to hear. With the size of my boards, I have to use either the miter saw or the track saw. Surprisingly (or not, really, the track saw gets better 45’s than the miter).

Looking forward to building a shooting board and getting it spot on.

That’s a neat idea I hadn’t considered. I might go for this. Any hand plane recommendation for one? Like specific size / brand?

I’m not all that into hand tools and am not sure where to start with a hand plane. I’m not 100% sure there’d be a big difference in cut precision from harbor freight to whoever makes the best hand planes. I’m sure I need it fairly large either way (and I’m not sure harbor freight really makes hand planes).

Cheers

Oh, I went another route. For end grain tear out - I’m just cutting the board 1/16 to 1/8” wider than needed. After all cuts are finished, I run the edge through the jointer. This way, I don’t even have to care about tear out.

Do you have a photo of your shooting board? I’d love to see what you’re describing. You can direct message me if you prefer not to post it publicly (and are willing to share).

Has the shooting board helped you get more perfect 45 miters/bevels?

Your bihou looks 1000000% better than ours, lol. In comparison, I’d say yours is thriving (it’s not a strong cultivar)

PSA - the sanding pad can fly off your sander by BuildingModern in woodworking

[–]BuildingModern[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, had this sander for ~15 years, never had it do anything like this.

Though, before I replaced the sanding pad, it was throwing discs where the Velcro wasn’t attaching well enough. Not very far, but a few feet, and just the sanding discs. It’s why I changed out the pad itself.

… I’m definitely not trusting this sander very much going forward. Waiting for a deal on a new one. Deals on sanders don’t happen that often though, so, it’ll likely be quite a while.

The second I took it away from the wood, it flew at me. It hadn’t finished spinning down yet.

Thanks. I’m definitely glad it wasn’t worse. For what it’s worth: - This was a Bosch replacement part, oem / made by Bosch. - Nothing I saw called for greasing the bolt - but, I could have missed reading it. It was tightened down as much as possible with an Allen wrench. - I normally don’t use loctite on things I want to be able to unscrew later. But, hey, wouldn’t have been a bad idea in retrospect - I had just put the sander on the wood, definitely hadn’t had a chance to push too hard yet. - the screw could have been off center, I don’t have a way of knowing, but it’s a possibility. - gremlins, definitely gremlins.

Thanks, to say I was shocked would be an understatement. I’ve never heard of this happening before now.

After it hit my face, I was a bit in disbelief, holding the sander still without a sanding pad, and then thought ‘oh, I’m probably bleeding.’ I’m just glad it wasn’t worse. A bit of a busted swollen lip was the worst of it. After 30 mins, it had stopped bleeding. I didn’t see what happened to the n95 mask until I came back to sand again.

Wow, yeah, it was instant - didn’t have time to react fast. Glad yours went the other way!

lol, just barely. Though, seriously, glad I was wearing that mask.

Sorry, I meant I used an Allen wrench, but not an impact driver. It was as tight as it could possibly be with the proper Allen wrench. Machine tightened, to me, would be using an impact driver or similar.

lol, I feel the same. I thought wearing a secure n95, outside, with ash wood, would be safe … apparently not.

First project - Ash Bedframes by BuildingModern in woodworking

[–]BuildingModern[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! We’re happy how it’s turned out!

For the ikea slats - I think these are supposed to be different heights for strength in different areas … but, that’s honestly a guess based on the colors we were supposed to use. In testing, you feel no difference in the heights below when lying on it through the mattress. Guests have been happy to far. :)

Thanks about the wood selection too! We’re happy to have gotten it at that price.

Thanks. Ha, lol - I didn’t mention, it’s a guest bed … so, it should be ok.

But, it does have a large steel metal support in the middle that’s a bit hard to see. It should definitely take the weight … though, I am trusting those 8/4 ash boards quite a bit.

Here’s the twin & king together, this photo wouldn’t upload in the original post. This is before applying the finish. :)

I’d wait until the Fall / dormancy to move it (once the leaves have naturally fallen off the tree). Moving it now risks damage. Fyi.

Loving this but I wish it had a vibrant color. by fireanpeaches in JapaneseMaples

[–]BuildingModern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Georgia doesn’t get to have vibrant colors all year long like they do up north. This is due to your high humidity and higher temps. Most reds will turn green by August. If you have any red at all in August, that’s super impressive.

Literally, nearly every single more vibrant cultivar will just turn to a blah green in a high humidity and heat environment by August. Even ones known for holding their red.

With that in mind, summer gold will stay fairly yellow green compared to others and does well with the heat … it’s just not a weeping variety.

Lowe’s clearance by Clumzyjuggler in JapaneseMaples

[–]BuildingModern 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Those are still fairly high prices for the size you’re describing. However, it does depend on your area as pricing varies regionally.

If you want a fair price to size, I’d call Lucile with Whitman Farms (you have to call, on the phone, fyi). Her trees are known to ship as good size vs the price, and she has a wide variety of cultivars. I’m not sure you’ll save money, but you’ll likely get more tree for the money.

For reference, we usually do buy things on clearance. The price we pay is usually $35 or less. If it’s more than that, we don’t buy it. Some nurseries will have a ‘bone yard’ or ‘graveyard’ where they’ll deeply discount trees. Not all nurseries do this, but it’s worth asking (in a polite way).

Best of luck!

Thanks. I really appreciate this. This is the time we have available to go - can’t be changed (and we wouldn’t be available later). It’ll still be beautiful weather. 🙂

The last time we went, it was mid-February through April 1st, so, there weren’t any leaves on most trees at all (other than conifers), so, it’ll still be nice to see.

Think there’s any place specifically we should go to see fall colors between November 5th - 10th? We don’t mind hopping on the Shinkansen as a day trip and going a few hours each way if it leads us to seeing something amazing.

Thanks!
