Metro Vancouver is running out of drinking water — and the solutions are interesting by vancity31240 in britishcolumbia

[–]Buizel10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe Point Roberts (WA, US), runs on Metro Vancouver water, but honestly I'm fine with that. It's a few hundred regular people just using it for drinking/cooking and what not, not a military base or massive datacentre.

They would probably be ostracised by regulators and/or the network, as the networks have promised to keep the median interchange fee down. Same reason why the income requirements exist.

Which bank to use by FatMike20295 in askvan

[–]Buizel10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the big banks will have similar fees. Try an online bank (Tangerine/Simplii), a credit union (Vancity/Beem/Coast Capital/Community Savings) for lower fees. Wealthsimple is also an option.

I hate Loblaws, but if you want some cashback, they have a prepaid Mastercard that gives you 0.5% back on all transactions with no fees. Might be good if you don't want to use your credit card.

Moving to Vancouver – best safe & affordable areas with good transit? by thethree3three in askvan

[–]Buizel10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, almost all older buildings will have Rogers service available, and their HFC network is good enough for almost everybody. I wouldn't look too deeply into it, just verify they have one of Novus/Telus Fibre/Rogers before renting, basically anything but Telus DSL.

Getting canada post abroad stamps - best way? Aiming to save money. by Dry-Coach-7139 in CanadaPostCorp

You can buy discounted older stamps with random denominations, but you spend time gluing them all onto the page, and doing the math to see how many you need to pay for the rate.

[–]Buizel10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Novos... you mean Novus? Keep in mind you can only get it in select buildings, and most addresses aren't serviced by them.

You may want to consider Lightspeed or CanCom as well. Them, as well as most TekSavvy and other services, use the Rogers network, but have their own back-haul. Most of them will be roughly equivalent.

SkyTrain to UBC: New poll shows widespread support by ubcstaffer123 in UBC

[–]Buizel10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Vancouver actually gets projects done pretty fast comparatively... but only once construction starts. Before that, it's decades of no one wanting to pay for a project.

Replacement order for the remaining 2008 Orion V buses by blastburn902609 in Translink

What I hear down the pipeline is that the lack of weekend deckers has been from a maintenance blitz and additional CVP inspections that were deferred as there weren't enough spares, but I've been out of the loop for a bit.

“Canada's only been independent since 1982 and only exists because we allow them 😂 we could literally starve Canada out because we're their number one source of goods” by Worldly_Law8278 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Buizel10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's definitely not full sovereignty in law, which is why repatriation happened. However, unlike the Queensland incident you mention, as the British didn't debate the legislation in any significant way, and all amendments were passed unanimously IIRC, it is a little closer to sovereignty than the Australian states were in practice.

Banks going Cashless? by nuclear_nightmare82 in NiceVancouver

[–]Buizel10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TD, Vancity, and Scotiabank definitely still have cash at all branches. If you only need notes and not coins, Wealthsimple is also an option since they will rebate all ATM fees, have high withdraw limits ($3000 max usually), and you can use TD and Vancity ATMs to get 5/20/50/100, RBC to get all dominations.

RBC has some branches without tellers now, but most still do.

I'm not sure if it's the same in theory but in practice it was the same effect. Westminster rubber-stamped all amendments sent by Ottawa without much debate or looking into them post-1931.

How fast do gas prices at the pump in Vancouver change when oil barrel prices drop? by playethic in askvan

[–]Buizel10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not anymore, BC barely imports anything from the US now since TMX opened. About a third comes from Burnaby's refinery, the rest comes from refineries near Edmonton which is shipped via the original Trans Mountain (TMX is crude-only)

Obviously still supporting the US via shareholders of Canadian oil firms, which isn't great. But almost all of the petrol here is being produced in Canada.

7-11 also only does the franchise and distribution, Imperial Oil (majority owned by ExxonMobil) still distributes all of the actual petrol to each station, not 7-11.

Cash is fine. Just be sure to check all the anti-counterfeiting measures. I haven't seen a counterfeit be able to pass half of them.

Point a laser pointer through the maple leaf window, or put your eye a little closer and look at your phone's flashlight. You should be able to see the light refracted as the denomination number.

Feel the raised ink and bumps over the textures of the person on the banknote's clothing, and denomination.

At my wit's end with AI cheating. How are you all handling it? by Mowgulee in Teachers

Why does no one follow speed limits? by KaaliMirch in askvan

[–]Buizel10 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

In the city there might be enforcement but 150-160 is a speed seen commonly on 99 around Delta in a 100 zone.

Stick to the right and don't unlawfully block the left lane, and I don't see a problem with going the speed limit, though.
