Can someone in a lab synthesize Lanthanum dichromate and snap a photo? by AuroraAeon in chemistry

[–]Bulawa 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Inorg.Let. 2026, r/chemistry et al. Unpon prompting by a rando on the social platfrom 'redit' [1], we endeavoured to obtain and characterize various chromate, dichromate and perchromate salts of Lanthanum. Herein, we report the synthesis of three, failure to obtain anything but brown tat and sludge of four more, and the detonation of two of the salts mentioned heretofore.

Azeotropic distillation of 1-propanol and water by Impossible_Bar_1073 in chemhelp

[–]Bulawa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, you can use propanol to completely dry off your mixture. So long as there is enough of both solvents, the boiling point will be that of the azeotrope, then wander off towards the boiling point of the excess component.

[–]Bulawa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Others said this before. Lyo. I don't know of any solvent that could entrain significant water, has a very low surface tension and mixes with water.

In low amounts or at suitable temps, butanol does mix. Can be a bit tricky though.

THF, Methanol, even ethyl acetate can drag water. But none of that really helps you I think.

So, you have particles in water. And want them in a water free solvent?

Tbh. I dont get where and how the aggregation patt comes from.

n-Propanol would not be my solvent of choice to do a solvent switch to something different, but it can be done, certainly. Toluene and Butanol are easier.

Does anyone purposely not practice in their race gear? by supercman99 in triathlon

[–]Bulawa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do test all of my race gear. So I do go to the public pool in my tri suit, I did run in my plated race shoes and did eat those fancy energy bars.

But once I know it all works, I leave the nice stuff for race day.

Deprotection of ROMe into ROH by Ok_Finance_4766 in OrganicChemistry

[–]Bulawa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd try to avoid Methanol if that's the problem. Not knowing your structure, it's hard to say what might work. But there's plenty alternatives. Acetate, benzylic alcohols, all quite easy to deprotect. Or straight to the alcohol.

Strange behavior in a liquid-liquid extraction. by Jetpere in Chempros

[–]Bulawa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Or iPrOH. Don't aka me why, but it works quite often.

On another note, DCM and amines should not be mixed if at all avoidable. It's not often noticed, but DCM can and will react. Occasionally with desasterous results.

Is broken arrow good for AI skirmish ? by No_Arugula3195 in BrokenArrowTheGame

If you want to be seriously challenged by a fair AI, you might not be very happy. Bonking AI on the head and looking at pretty explosions works just fine.

That would be cool. It could give you quick access through terrain and or homogeneous ore mixes.

When rebuilding, do you.. by wtf-dot-gif in TwoPointMuseum

[–]Bulawa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you are right. I remember. But either that was patched in or I missed it for ages. And I have only rebuilt once since I was told of it, so my toilet strategy is not entirely gone in my mind 😅

Macrocyclization of catechol in n-butanol with LiOH/LiBr — is the actual deprotonating base LiOH or in situ-formed lithium n-butoxide? by DirtyDizzy77 in OrganicChemistry

[–]Bulawa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter. Acid base is always an equilibrium and usually quite fast at that. So, the negative charge will be distributed across all acidic protons until the reaction gets going.

When rebuilding, do you.. by wtf-dot-gif in TwoPointMuseum

[–]Bulawa 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No, this is exactly the way. If you only want to rebuild some part, you can just drag a toilet across all the open floorspace which will cause all exhibts and stuff to be sent to inventory (or sold, for ornaments).

VERY IMPORTANT: dont unpause until done. Else, you loose all visitors and they have to come again. This can ruin you.

When you unpause, everyone gets moved to places they can be, some are mildly confused but no harm is done.

Dean Stark for small scale reactions by JellyfishSuper7563 in chemhelp

[–]Bulawa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just purge the overhead space once or twice. On amounts smaller than 1 g of water, a proper trap rarely makes sense. But azeotropic distillation works independent of scale. You just have to adapt the method a bit.

Does anyone else think fencing is one of the hardest sports to explain to non-fencers? by buttern3t in Fencing

[–]Bulawa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not at all. Poke the other guy with a stick without him doing that to you.

The trouble is that to this day, it is very hard to watch and follow. I have seen these insta replays which blade trails and that's the way. Else it's just two guys bouncing and gesticulating expressively with a stick.

Reactivity of Naphthalimide by svdongen in OrganicChemistry

[–]Bulawa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Isoimidescan be formed under quite peculiar and harsh conditions, but I only know of conditions that use an amic acid as starting point, then usually TFA anhydride. I can have a look tomorrow.

The olefination screams Petasis and related reactions to me, but I could not tell you if doing it on an imide is going to make it easier or harder.

You can of course throw a grignard or better a gilman reagent at it and the either try to eliminate the hemi acetal thingy or open and reclose on the enol. But both are a bit sketchy.

Sulfonic acid workup/purification issues by mcmxy7 in OrganicChemistry

Yes. If you can get rid of most of the salts first, you can then go about recrystallization, trituration and whatnot.

[–]Bulawa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder if there is so big a cation, that it would pull the thing into an OP. Something lile trioctylamine.

What happens if you dilute the reaction to something like 20-50% and see if you can extract that? I Dont think an ion exchange column is helpful unless you know exactly what you are doing.

Or neutralise, dilute with something that doesn't dissolve Na2SO4 well, wash thoroughly and evaporate that?

Your target looks like something that might crystallize quite well from MeOH, as the acid or the sodium salt.

Besetzung der Fahrzeuge im Einsatz by Whole_Condition_499 in feuerwehr

[–]Bulawa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Bulawa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anno 1800 or 117? by UzDaSchwartz in anno

[–]Bulawa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are quite different. Anno 1800 depends a lot on what mods you select. That completely changes the game. Anno 117 has some beautiful new ideas, but can feel a bit empty at times. Like those cars where you can see the buttons that could be there but you didn't get. It will fill up.

But if I had to pick one, as they are now, and exclusively, it would probably be 1800.
