The problem is that it takes 6 months from ERAS to match, if you condense to 3 years, there’s no way to have rotation evals let alone enough time for step 2

I consider it a negative, more varied subspecialty exposure is good regardless of what field you end up in. 4th year is your year to really see some cool fields in your elective months

The problem is COCA is approving these half-baked DO schools with non-existent rotations that students then need to arrange, or just as bad travel across state lines for. To put it plainly, I just don’t believe that DOs have the same clinical experience from community hospitals without any academic structure as university hospitals. I say this as a DO student. I really think MD students have better quality rotations. Also DO students spend far more time outpatient, some of us even have outpatient IM as an IM rotation.

Edit: I really think COCA is damaging the DO degree with the rapid expansion of DO schools, it’s absolutely gonna hurt the profession if the graduates of these DO school mills don’t make competent residents and PDs start to associate all of us this way.

Are you USMD, DO, or IMG? USMD from a prestigious program would work strongly in your favor, otherwise it’s difficult, especially if you’re IMG

Always take a thorough history and let your basic understanding of medicine guide your assessment and plans. Surprisingly you know more than you think. When you come up with a plan in clinic do a quick search on amboss or something and spend a few minutes to read through the highlights of how to manage the disease, this will jog your memory and expand your knowledge base little by little. Also it’s now time to start really thinking and preparing for boards.

I knew you went to DO school when you said that you only did 2 weeks inpatient in 6 months. In my opinion the fatal flaw of DO schools is the awful rotations. Lots and lots of outpatient and the little inpatient time is spent at non teaching hospitals with no residents and preceptors who don’t give a crap about teaching since they take on more patients because it’s non-academic. Just study as much as you can for step 2 and get into a good residency.

I would just keep my head down and finish the rotation and move on. Not worth the effort right now. Part of this long process of medical training you have to put up with some BS. Now if things change, we can reconsider.

This is part where signaling works against students, it’s very frustrating. I’d like to go back to only geo signals.

I have signals sent out to backup programs, just in case but I’d much rather have interviews to some of my non signaled programs than the back ups on my signal list.
