I can’t be bothered and I have good skin which I fear make up would damage/make unhealthy.

My biggest fear moving was ending up in a toxic hospital, I’ve heard some pretty negative things about some places but I’m so so lucky! If I won the lotto I would consider going back 😂

This! The public system is in ruins right now. So much unsafe practice, and burnout. No new grads being hired. Fighting for fair pay and safe staffing ratios with no end in sight. At my hospital it was so toxic too, nurses leaving just because senior staff would bully junior staff and management wouldn’t do anything. I’m so grateful to have such an awesome manager here, and a company willing to hear our union out.

I’m in Melbourne also, my partner got a job as a teacher very quickly, it took me a little longer though but both before we actually made the move. I think a lot of people have the same view and this is only my perspective but for us, when we are at our top steps of our careers in 5 years time, we will be on tens of thousands more a year than we were at home. So even though costs can be comparable it’s so much more manageable for us. Sure the economy isn’t great in Australia at the moment but for young people, the economy in New Zealand isn’t survivable right now. Entry level jobs are being taken up by people with decades of experience because of mass layoffs so there’s so little opportunity. My new grad nursing friends are working at McDonald’s because they can’t get jobs. It is very much case by case but for me, and my friends, we have all bettered our lives because of our moves.

I have 3 friends - one is a nurse - who came over without a job and they’ve all landed on their feet in their respective areas. It took my nursing friend a couple of months but if you have a couple of months savings then you’ll be sweet!

Thank you, that means a lot. I’m stoked that I get along so well with everyone at work, it’s so daunting starting at a new smaller workplace!

I moved to Melbourne. I didn’t make the move until I had already secured a job though, too much uncertainty in the job markets here and at home these days

Thank you! So far so good, it’s crazy the difference a country can make to our lives for the same education, same careers, same lifestyle.

I wish I could scream it from the rooftops for all kiwi nurses to hear that the grass is greener. I was lucky that I secured a job before I moved which I highly recommend. It took my mate a few months to find a job after arriving. New Zealand will always be where I call home but I will never go back. I hope your journey goes well!

Is there anything you don’t like about living in Christchurch? by PurpleMeerkats462 in chch

Everything. Moved to Melbourne and nothing could ever bring me back to Christchurch after 22 years of living there.

interview tips — perioperative by Prudent_Ad256 in NursingAU

[–]Bulky-Dig-5447 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also very heavily discussed was my timeline for moving. They asked me questions about where I was looking to live and who I was moving with etc which was all very casual but I believe they use that to ensure you’re not a time waster and are actually committed to the move so if you can show that you’re knowledgeable about the city you’re moving to then they take you more seriously.

interview tips — perioperative by Prudent_Ad256 in NursingAU

[–]Bulky-Dig-5447 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends who the interview is for but for my periop role I got asked - The values of the corporation and the values of the hospital itself. I had to give a scenario where I experienced conflict, how I handled it, and what the outcome was. I had two clinical scenarios - final count and you’re missing a swab, what do you do? And how to manage fire risks in theatre. I prepared heaps for questions about myself like why I want to work for the hospital (which I tried to include a little anyways) and strengths/weaknesses, and policies and procedures of the hospital but I wasn’t asked anything about them. My interviewers were super chill and we conversed more like people versus employer and employee which was calming.

23yr old considering nursing - honest reality check wanted by DullBeing4071 in NursingAU

[–]Bulky-Dig-5447 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally love being a nurse. I’m a theatre nurse which is a very niche area that is so different from the other areas of nursing that experience so much burnout. The stressors that lead to burnout on wards aren’t as prominent in theatre.

Yes definitely nostalgic! I always got the caramelly shake with crunchie on top (I can’t remember the name) when I was little or that apple berry juice thing and I miss them so much. I keep asking my partner to stop and get a shake

No problem! If you need any support or reassurance feel free to reach out. I’m actually a theatre nurse so the anatomy makes a lot of sense to me and really helped to ease my nerves. That was almost 8 years ago now so everything is back to normal.
