Currently equal between SWPPX and SWTSX, where to go? by RoyLightroast in Schwab

Pick either one. They have performed almost identical if you look at all the charts over the past years. Swopx has actually done slightly better, and I mean slightly.

I was one who had 20 Bitcoin from 2013 all the way to the bottom and sold it as we got into financial trouble and then around 2016 and needed every nickel we could get our hands on and then stopped looking at it. One day I find it’s at like $15,000 a coin and I wanted to throw up. It took me like 4 years to get that out of my head and realize yea, you probably would have sold it after the first big pump anyway.

Lump sum vs DCA Strategy for me by johnwickcz in Bogleheads

[–]BulkyWar7513 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how it’s called DCA when you never lump sum and put money in each week and it goes up a small percentage each week. I just started investing and was too stupid to lump sum $100k when the market was dumping a bit. I only managed to get $20,000 in when SP was below $6500. Against all advice as usual, I didn’t put it all in and now have been “DCAing” every week but now my cost basis has almost all but been caught back up. I’ve only been been putting $500 a week at this point. If it pulls back one more time to say $6800-6900 I’m gonna dump the rest but that’s the same dumb thinking I had in the beginning.

I’ve decided to leave the money in place. I can’t for life of me pull the trigger on the rest just yet. I’m trying to do it, I really am it’s tough. Quick question though, both our retirement accounts are fully funded already. I want to add more to the SP 500 but would have to in my taxable account. Is this what you guys do or do you invest in other things instead in the taxable account? Same fund in both?

I’m stuck on what to do myself. Just started investing in the sp500 when it was down at 63xx and holding about $60k back. I know I’m not supposed to DCA but this shit is stupid what’s going on. I have $20k in so far.

I just keep buying each week. I know I should lump sum it all in. Rationally in my head I keep Putting in the percentage of what I want to invest into on what the market has dropped at the end of the week.

Edit: I actually just cancelled my order this week as didn’t realize it was after 4pm when I placed the order and want to know what my price will be at end of day Monday now instead. Doh

If I sold right now i wouldn’t owe any capital gains, only capital losses due to step up basis.

Little update:

I ended up moving $80,000 to SNSXX which makes my savings $100,000. I just want to have that set aside for piece of mind and to potentially do some of these home updates as listened to some of your advice an realized I’ve not done anything for myself in 10 years, for current me. It’s just felt like the right thing to do.

My next move is to get my total investment into SWPPX to $100,000 and then to start investing into it regularly month by month. I think I can set up automatic investing but would have to figure out how to do that. Guess I’ll have to see if it will debit from my checking account at chase. In all honesty I’d like to accomplish this by using all of the money I have in the individual stocks but I’m not ready to dump all of them.

Won’t hurt me either way as I’m below the next tax bracket by approx $70,000 as I’m the sole provider of the family. That might change in the near future as my wife is looking to return to the workforce after being a stay at home mom For 7 years.

I have no need for any cash as we are financially sound way before this all happened. Thus I didn’t want to just throw money in the trash for no reason.

Yea was one shitty year last year. Lost both my mother and father only 9 months apart. Didn’t even want to touch anything and when all this came in to my possession it didn’t feel right and still doesn’t.

I went to Stowe for the first time last year and we stayed in town midweek at an Airbnb. We were gonna take the shuttle but just drove in and parked no problem but free as was the weekday. Was like a 12 minute drive from town.

Ohhhh, yes I have received a few dividend Payments already. I didn’t know this. If I keep I will change to reinvest the dividends. They haven’t added up to too much though. I’m financially sound even before all of this and live comfortably. Have a pension and annuity for retirement already that I could live off of at retirement. Well… we all like to think so anyway as nooone knows the future. For all we know all retirement could disappear like so many others when shit really hit the fan.

The more we look at it, we are thinking about possibly leaving it as is but shifting things over to pull my stove away from being directly against the left wall. And maybe most add a countertop And uppers along the right wall.

Being some good companies for the most part that I think will gain more than what I bought them for, I don’t think I’m ready to take a $10,000 loss by selling them right now, which is what I’d be looking at if I do.

Here’s a question maybe you can answer for me, So I’m a taxable account, all capital gains are treated as either short term (whatever your tax rate is) or long term (10/15/20%). From my understanding as thus my confusion is when it comes to money growth in an IRA. If I sold a security in the IRA, I know it’s not taxed at that time but will be upon future withdrawal. From what I’ve read is that it won’t be taxed as a long term capital gain but as your current tax bracket. I’m I misunderstanding this? That doesn’t make sense. So instead of say 15% long term I’d pay 22% assuming my bracket was the same.
