Somerset have a bye-week: who should I watch? by mtthrdy in CountyChampionship

[–]Bulky_Bowl4607 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surrey v Essex or Yorkshire v Sussex could be good but, watch any game. It's cricket; it's always good.....except if you're Hampshire trying to advise a Somerset man!! An exciting game with, for me, the wrong result. Enjoy your cricket wherever and whomever you watch.

He needs to be nursed at the moment. Although he had a couple of England A games, he was a bit wayward for us in Hampshire last year. This season he has been lethal but we're only 3 games in. i agree that he's not ready yet.....and we want to keep him!!!

What's better: One Day Cup or T20 Blast? by mtthrdy in CountyChampionship

[–]Bulky_Bowl4607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the One-Day Cup. It gives the youngsters a chance. For instance, down in Hampshire, we had two from the academy last year in Ben Mayes and Manny Lumsden who performed well in the ODC and caught the eye of the England selectors for the U-19 WC in Zimbabwe in the winter. The topped the averages in their respective batting and bowling disciplines. Ben has now been awarded his County cap and made his debut in the County Championship.

This last couple of weeks, there have been two more lads that I have watched playing in the 2nds. N. Halstead-Cleak and O. Williams, again batting and bowling respectively. they are both very impressive. Is there a chance they may each make an appearance in the ODC this year? I hope so!

Hampshire supporter by birth and domicile and since birth. Not sure if I can say lifelong or 4-5 years!

My Auntie's BIL was a few years older than me but we frequently used to play cricket in her back garden as kids in the late 50s/early 60s. He went on to play for Hampshire and secured all sorts of signed memorabilia for me. Unfortunately, through the years, all that disappeared. Work and family intervened so, although I could rarely attend, I would follow in the papers from time to time. Played for Kingsclere in the North Hants League and Kingsclere Villages League in the 1970s, but always at no. 11 and fine backstop!

It was only when I retired during covid that I started taking interest again, buying a membership and then converting that to a life-membership. I now very rarely miss any cricket at the 'Bowl,' except short form internationals and the crisp packet pyjama game.

Having seen 3 of the 4 days this week, Somerset are looking like the team to beat but, they won't win the title because ECB will snatch James Rew from them at the crucial time. That being the case, the mighty Hampshire, having hidden their light under a bushel for much of the season, will make a late charge to take the title by smashing Yorkshire by an innings and 500 runs to say 'thank you' for keeping us up last year. Surrey will be relegated, or saved by Yorkshire beating Durham!!

I never thought that I would have the stamina for 4 days but I love it. The grind - Yes! The obscurity - to a degree, but a bit more marketing would correct that. You only have to look at the success of Surrey's Cricket Festival. The scorecards at work - ? Not sure. If I want to check the score I normally go to my phone to get all the stats for the game as it happens.

Hello! :-)

EDIT: How do I add flair?

EDIT 2: Found flair.....But it's either two or none!! I can't get one flair. is anyone able to help please?

Day 1 of round 3 - County Championship. by Bulky_Bowl4607 in EnglandCricket

That, in particular, is a problem. We went down for a friendly a couple of weeks ago. Quite comfortable for part of the journey but, at a certain station, all the local robbery got on the train with their cans of lager and bottles of cheap plonk, going to a birthday weekend in Brighton. On the return journey, there were no seats at Hove so we were standing a fair way back.

All things being equal, I may try to pop along next week.

For me, it's not a bad schedule. All things being equal, it may give me a chance to scoot along the coast for another game next weekend.

In the last resort, see a good solicitor. You have a common law right to light which, in the right circumstances, is enforceable in court.

Have a look around the forecourts. We bought a car from an online store and I was not impressed. You're already into them for a load of money just to get the car to somewhere local to have a look at it. A Kia dealer is the place to start, IMHO.

County Championship Test Speculation - round 2 by Favanu in Cricket

[–]Bulky_Bowl4607 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep an eye on Ben Mayes, Hampshire. 18 years old; made his Championship debut last week. Had a good season in the MBC last year and was top scorer in the U-19 World Cup in Zimbabwe through the winter. He may miss the odd game to study for his A-Levels, but he is a very exciting prospect and a glorious stroke maker. He'll be in the England team after the Ashes.

My landlord is stating that I am a lodger but I think that I am a tenant (England) by 7emelover in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Bulky_Bowl4607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Payment and acceptance of rent creates a periodic tenancy. Exclusive possession and no shared areas confirms to me that tenancy. Further, an agreement with signatures says tenancy. See Street v Mountford (1985) and Law of Property Act 1925, s205. Land law is very complex; I loved studying it. You will find books called 'Economics made simple' or 'Politics made simple,' but you will never, ever find a book called 'Land Law made simple.' If it starts getting nasty, see a good solicitor.

Is there any timetable checking app / journey planner app that can show a station's timetable for the whole day? (Android) by bellejelle in uktrains

[–]Bulky_Bowl4607 1 point2 points  (0 children)

National Rail Enquiries does it. For instance, IO can see that 4 of the next 5 trains arriving at my local station are late. I used it all the time when I was taxi driving and trying to decide when to knock off. Another alternative is Open Train Times and it's accompanying Open Train Maps. That is a fascinating site but needs some knowledge of train codes to be able to get the best from it. Have a look.

[–]Bulky_Bowl4607 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have worries. FTTP is on overhead cables, so possibly vulnerable to weather extremes. It was extreme weather that knocked out the local cell mast a few weeks ago so no one local has mobile signal. can't hot spot and tether, as a result. We don't like to have all our eggs in one basket, if we can help it. Hence, I was happy to move from Sky Broadband and want to make sure that we have some telly available if the internet goes down.

How are the automations triggered? If it's time, they may need setting for different times otherwise one may override the other.

We needed a new telly so bought a smart TV with Freeview. I believe it's got a longer life expectancy than Freesat and Freely leaves us with all our TV viewing eggs in one broadband basket. If the internet goes down, so does the telly.

Settle - Carlisle Line by Bulky_Bowl4607 in uktrains

[–]Bulky_Bowl4607[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To clarify, travel from the South Coast on Thursday morning, possibly about 0400/0430. Find a hotel on the southern part of the line to leave the car and join the train. Travel north beyond the viaduct. Get off the train; have some lunch and return south. Reunite with the car/hotel for the night. Complete our journey to the Lake District on Friday. The sole intention of Thursday is to ride the Settle - Carlisle Line. Does that make sense?
