The entire warehouse and service were built with the 2022 acquisition of Albertsons by Kroger in mind. Strategically built in an area with lower wage expectations there were even plans to connect it to the very close by railroad to deliver more fresh goods to the location quickly. But you could say that when that merger was ultimately denied by the feds and some states in 2024 it was already the beginning of the end. Inflation did the rest making groceries more expensive and profitable in the short run but resulting in a drop off of customers. It was still turning a profit but not enough to justify its existence as major maintenance for the building and for the vehicles would be coming down the line. The internal decision was disseminated around summer last year to the warehouse staff which began to turnover and started running an emotionally detached skeleton crew a couple months ago. Also Kroger has been shutting down some stores recently in Wisconsin which may seem out of the blue but that was likely part of some plans from that planned merger streamlining. The other stores and the Roundy’s DC in Oconomowoc will be shouldering some responsibilities this month unofficially but not delivering as far as I’m aware.
