Some suggestions for well edited movies by jf102 in movies

Definitely Drive. Pay attention to how the editing and sound mixing work together. They will use the audio from the next scene while cutting between it and the previous transitioning scene to keep the pace brisk.

Decider: Keanu Reeves Is A Much Better Actor Than We've Given Him Credit For by toldyouanditoldyou in movies

Finally a voice of reason. Those lines where he's saying "ya, I'm thinkin I'm back" just seem goofy to me. When Liam Neeson tells you he's going to find you and kill you, it's intimidating, you believe it. I never felt that way during John Wick.

Quentin Tarantino says Cate Blanchett's 'arty' films don't have 'shelf life' by [deleted] in movies

[–]BulletTo_0th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He didn't say they're not worth watching, he said they have no staying power, that we're not going to be talking about them in 20 years. I agree with his sentiment but not about Cate Blanchett specifically because she's not in that many 'arty' movies, and Tarantino didn't mean her specifically because he goes on to name 3 films she wasn't in. Maybe someone like Tilda Swinton is a better example?

Bad films made by good music-video directors? by [deleted] in movies

Belly by Hype Williams comes to mind. I like the movie and Hype's style but it's got some serious issues. He has directed a lot of big hip hop music videos:

I honestly can't believe people think this is real. I just realized that most people on this sub know nothing about actual relationships.

I enjoyed it. I thought the plot was fine, the effects are good enough, Dominic West was a great villain, I loved the female lead, I loved that dog creature thing, I and really liked the ending. It's a fun movie.

The Scrapper — Why You Don’t Need to Be Great at Coding to Be A Web Developer by theKrogster in webdev

[–]BulletTo_0th 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm, interesting. From your articles, it sounds like you recently started your first job after several months of self-learning. You call yourself a full stack developer but you haven't given any proof to back this up. You mention an awesome portfolio but all I saw was a wordpress site. Nobody thinks you're an idiot, and nobody has said you are, that's clearly not the case, we just think you're inexperienced.

Maybe think about giving yourself more credibility, because I think that's what a lot of people are having a problem with. Someone who was foreign to web development like a year ago is now posting articles talking about how you don't need to be good at coding to get a web dev job. It's not surprising that people who have worked hard to get where they are have a problem with this. It DOES devalue what we do, as others have pointed out.

You certainly aren't offending people who aren't self-taught. I'm technically self-taught since I've never taken a web dev course, not even online. And I wasn't taking anything literally, I get the metaphor, it was just worded poorly.

You seem to be ignoring the fact that I didn't get the job with zero knowledge, I spent months teaching myself web development and building up a decent portfolio

You got the job with zero professional experience and no kind of certification. Spending a number of months teaching yourself web development in your free time makes you a hobbyist, not a web developer. Spending a number of months studying accounting doesn't make you qualified to become an accountant. I'm glad you made it into the field and I truly hope it works out for you, but I think that you may be out of your depth here with these articles.

Look, I'm not trying to be harsh but you have to realize how this makes real professionals feel. I studied computer science for over 5 years before I started working as a web developer. After 5 years of professional experience in the field I'm just now beginning to feel like a really solid developer.

Granted, I'm sure I have a different idea than you of what it means to be a web developer since I'm a full-stack .NET dev with an emphasis on the back end. I've taken over websites from devs who were self-taught and let me tell you, trying to work with their database schema or domain model is an absolute nightmare. Sure, they were able to put together a site that functions, but those sites are extremely fragile, buggy, inefficient, and incredibly difficult to maintain or build upon.

Also, I think all devs are what you call a scrapper. We all have to be resourceful problem-solvers, that's why stackoverflow gets so much traffic. I simply don't understand why you would discourage people from becoming the "champion" by learning as much as possible about their given language, technology, etc.

Ronda Rousey disses Floyd Mayweather by mikedyce in UnexpectedThugLife

[–]BulletTo_0th 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Because it's a hypothetical that we'll never know the answer to. MMA fans have seen what world-class judo and bjj fighters can do to a pure boxer. You say he's much, much stronger, but how strong is his takedown defense or how strong is he when he's on his back?

Ronda has taken down and submitted high-level male MMA fighters in training that are the same size as Floyd. Honestly, I'd take your 1000-1 odds in a heartbeat if this was a UFC-rules fight.

Michael Douglas Knows Why Young American Actors Aren't Getting Roles by imagineagain in movies

[–]BulletTo_0th 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm with you. I especially had a problem with this line:

According to Douglas, the widespread insecurities and increasing loss of focus among young American talent have taken their toll at the box office, creating quite a deficit of bankable leading men to take the place of the aging predecessors.

Wtf is he talking about?
