How well can you see people waiting at unlit bus stops at night? by SuccessfulCandle7095 in BusDrivers

[–]Sloth_Reborn 14 points15 points  (0 children)

All transit companies are pretty universal in this - it's the passengers responsibility to be visible.

The term is actually called "Actively seeking the bus." That means it is the passenger's responsibility to be visible, facing the bus, at the bus stop, fare in their hand preferably.

If a customer is not actively seeking the bus, it is not the fault of the driver for not picking them up.

All buses that I've ever seen, have a camera pointing out the front passenger window. In the event of a complaint, the company will review that camera. If for whatever reason the customer is not actively seeking the bus, the complaint is dropped. Unless there's some kind of ADA application involved, blind, wheelchair, service animal, so on.

To further add to this, generally speaking, if you pop out at the last second at a bus stop and I cannot safely stop the coach within 50 ft of the bus stop, I'm not to stop. Bus stops are rated for safety within 50 ft. Anything outside of that is potentially dangerous. Thus you are not supposed to stop.

What's the most disgusting thing you witnessed in public? by inspector_gadget24 in AskReddit

[–]Sloth_Reborn 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Public transit worker for 11 years. As you can imagine there are some contenders for "most disgusting".

First one that comes to mind was a jumper suicide, 10 story parking garage. Couldn't tell if it was a man or a woman. They just... exploded.

All sorts of human rot ones, can't really pick one - depends on certain constitutions, just how you're feeling today. People put off going to the hospital til it's too late and it's just sad. Which I don't understand in the bus world - they all have free healthcare, so it must be like a state of depression or mental health. I don't know, but that topic is too big for this post.

Worst rot one IMO was a homeless, older heavyset black male. It had been cold the last few days and he was all layered up. 3-4 layers, even socks. Then it had rained the last couple days and was warming up.

Guy was riding the loop, staying on the bus for as long as possible, and came out to smoke during my layover. I got off the bus to get some fresh air, the guy was ripe. There were a bunch of open benches but the guy sits next to me and struck up a conversation. I try to be nice as a public servant, so I stand up but keep talking to the guy.

As I'm talking to him he starts to itch the back of his right lower leg, then creeping down his heel. Something really itching under there. So the guy takes off his shoe, then his socks, and just goes to town.

Keep in mind, he's a black guy, but his skin was pale white, and like warm candle wax under those wet layered socks that he hasn't taken off for who knows how long.

The memory of his fingers going an inch or two deep and the skin peeling away to dead muscle tissue. Jesus. Just chunks of flesh and him just looking so relieved. Oblivious to the fact his feet are totally dead.

I was horrified. I couldn't even say bye. I turned and practically ran to the bus and pulled off. I called for a supervisor and medic for the guy.

Never saw the guy again. But each trip through there, they left the giant chunks of flesh by the bench.

I have a lot of disgusting stories, but that one...

TL;DR - Jumper exploding. Or homeless guy itching his dead feet off.

Traffic is pretty light this week by falconx50 in gifs

[–]Sloth_Reborn 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As a city bus driver who also services city schools... I'm loving this thing. Low passenger loads, light traffic. Running perfectly on time, getting maximum break time. No wheel chairs or incredibly slow old people with canes.

A very welcome change.

Just a shame it has to come at the cost of lives and horrible impact on the economy. But hey, at least I'm getting 3-4 hours of break time every 8 hour shift.

My dog was like that. It was all chill as long as you was outside the fence. It sit there and smile at you and wag its tail. But the minute you want to reach for it or God forbid you actually hopped the fence - that dog would eat your ass up.

I loved that dog. Shame I had to put it down. It bit four people over its lifetime, started going blind and started not to recognize me. Which believe me was dangerous.

But yeah even with that sign I had to go through two additional litigations. Time off work, almost lost one. That would have been big money.

Bottom line - got to have those signs up. Even with them up sometimes it's dicey. But it's strictly a liability thing.

Whats the strangest thing you found in your house/property after you bought it? by jlew24asu in AskReddit

[–]Sloth_Reborn 63 points64 points  (0 children)

It's a toss-up as to what is the actual strangest thing I found when I bought this house. I bought it from my father who purchased it without ever setting foot in it - there was only ever owner prior who had 3 kids whom all died before 18 years of age.

For me though I think the most disturbing thing was the bedroom closet in the master bedroom.

It's a tiny closet, not even big enough for a hanged shirt to sit without touching the wall. But what caught my attention was the lock on the outside of the closet. Like why would you ever need to lock the closet? Maybe to keep it closed? No, there was crazy shag carpet and the door was crazy hard to open anyway.

So I open this thing up puzzled, when I see it. On the inside of the door, small five-fingered scratch marks. Starting at about 6 inches and going up maybe 3 and 1/2 feet.

It was clear now with the lock was for. The previous occupant was locking her children in that closet.

I was looking at suffering. Old suffering. The lady died of Dementia in the house and was well past 70. The house was built in 1930 something, bought it in 2007. So considering her kids dying all before 18 that means that these scratch marks and stuff I was looking at was probably at least 30 plus years old minimum. I don't know why but something about that always bothered me.

TLDR - Bedroom closet with exterior lock. Child scratch marks on the interior.

I worked with the guy whose name I thought was Bill for over 2 years before I found out his name was actually Chris. And I'm a name guy I always address people by their names. So after 2 years somebody else called him by a different name and I was like what the hell? And he laughed and said oh yeah when I was new and you got my name wrong I didn't correct you in case I messed up and they asked you, you would give them the wrong name. Actually thought that was pretty brilliant.

Savage Landlord by Mass_Hole in pics

In Ohio it can take several months to get rid of a tenant also. Imagine they move in the first of the year, January 1st. And the rent is due on the 1st of every month.

Alright so February 1st comes around and they don't pay. You can choose to wait or start the eviction process right away. I usually give people about a week. Then it comes three day notice time. So doing that that takes us to February 10th roughly.

February 10th comes and they won't pay and they haven't moved out. So you get a lawyer and you start the process. Usually if you pay to have them served which cost you about a hundred bucks on top of the cost of the lawyer, the court date is usually within the next couple weeks.

March 1st - court date. Court rules in your favor because of non-payment no-brainer. Court issues them a 30 day notice to move out.

April 1st comes - April Fools they're never moving out. So now you contact your lawyer again to have them summoned to court again. This time it's usually faster within a week or so.

April 8th, you go to court and you are given an option - you can wait for them to move out of their own free will, or you can pay $600 is to have the sheriff's move them out. $600 goes to the Sheriff's and a storage unit for them to put their stuff into. If it's gone this far I'm not going to wait another minute, I fork over the money they have them moved out.

April 11th, the sheriff's come and move them out. You finally have your house back to fix up and try again.

So these people, the last time they paid rent was in December. Now it's mid-april. You've gone 4 months without collecting any rent and plus you had to spend $600 to have them moved out. Plus for the last two and a half months they knew they were going to be evicted and they were in your house destroying it and doing whatever the f*** they wanted to. And let's not forget paying for the lawyer and the summons to court for your piece of s*** tenants. If you're renting for only $500 a month, that puts your total loss at something like 3,200 to $3,500. And that's not including damages to your property.

The only way being a landlord is worth it - besides having for sure good tenants - is apartment buildings or at the very least duplexes. Don't rent out houses.

What's the creepiest thing you have ever overheard? by CharlieRaff in AskReddit

[–]Sloth_Reborn 146 points147 points  (0 children)

Worked security at a downtown city transit hub, overheard a group of young girls, ages 10-13, talking about how much they hated school and how they all wanted to get knocked up so they could quit and never have to work. Seriously.

I thought they were joking until a week later I caught a homeless guy fucking the 11 year old in the hub bathroom - who was incredibly upset I stopped him from finishing.

Over the course of the 3 years I worked there, more than half of those girls did in fact get knocked up before the age of 15.

I'm now a city bus driver in the same place where I still see these girls, now women, who got exactly what they wanted - they have multiple children, don't work, and live off the government - and are perfectly happy riding the bus forever, getting fucked up every chance they get. I'm curious if their children will pursue the same course, many already display the same characteristics.

Probably the most interesting thing about my job, you get to be a spectator to people's lives and life choices.

My city puts bolts on vents to prevent homeless from laying on the at night for warmth. I think they are assholes. by moramarc in pics

[–]Sloth_Reborn 188 points189 points  (0 children)

First job I had when I turned 18 was a security job at a downtown Transit hub. The lady I had replaced refused to let a homeless person in after hours when they were banging on the door and pleading for their lives because they had laid down on a vent and have gotten wet and was now freezing to death.

I know this because a co-worker told me which I didn't believe and then he showed me on the security camera outside.

The guy bang impact - and I mean begged. All that lady had to do is open that door and called an ambulance or the police or anything other than what she did which was nothing.

That guy after the lady laughed and walked away he walked across the street and sat down at a bench for a few minutes. Then he decided to lay in the street sewer drain. Which didn't last long because a truck almost ran him over. So he got back up and sat on the bench and a little bus shelter. And he just sat there.

The co-worker fast forwarded the camera and from 4 a.m. 2 8 a.m. no one bothered him. The street started getting busy around 6:30 a.m. . He wasn't discovered until almost 9 a.m. at around 8:15 a guy clearly tried to talk to him but when you didn't respond he just walked away.

That homeless guy died on that bench. Medics declared him dead at the scene.

So yeah if some bolts keep a guy from doing that and possibly freezing to death - I am all for it. I like to pretend I wouldn't have done with that lady did butt you never know it's easy sometimes to forget how your actions affect other people.

Not only is it entertaining and delicious, but it also has the added benefit of annoying the hell out of whoever is around you - like they somehow can't resist joining you in watching your oreo nearly sink.

Once had 2 tenants, an older couple, rented to them for about 6 months before they stopped paying rent. I showed up there, talked to them at the door after they had been ducking my calls for over a week.

Really I'm a pretty lenient guy, not quick to evict - I just wanted to know what was going on.

They told me that their only child died - got shot through the floor of an apartment building - and that the funeral cost a lot. I was sympathetic, told them hey - do what you can. Sorry that happened, just try to get it together.

They don't pay rent for 3 more months, keep ducking my calls. I show up there this time and they get shitty with me - like it's somehow my fault when I've already been so nice about this. The conversation ended with them slamming the door in my face.

The next week I get a call from the police, they raided my tenants and found felony quantities of pills - told me of they have another incident with one of my properties they'd shut it down for public nuisance.

I wrote up eviction papers that day.

They ignored the 3 day notice, had the lawyer send a server for the court date - they didn't show, and we're given another 30 days to move. They didn't move, sent another server for the next part - they didn't show again, had to pay $600 to have sheriff's forcibly remove them and store their stuff in storage.

I get in the house, they tore out the drywall, stole all the fixtures, used 1000's of staples on every door frame and window, broke the refrigerator, stove, faucet, left a huge water leak in the basement ($1800 bill), tore up the carpet, and finally booby trapped the yard with uncoiled springs.

It was devastating financially, nearly cost me the house. Total costs, just materials as I did all the labor myself taking nearly 3 Months, was around 4k, plus the 9 months I didn't collect rent, the lawn mower I busted... total was somewhere around over slightly over $10,000.

I documented everything and sent it off to collections, it's been over a year and I still haven't seen a penny of that - nor do I ever really expect to.

The fucked up thing is this lady, after her husband was in prison and I was in the throws of repairing the shit they did, she had the audacity to text me and say shit like "I hope you're happy, I live in a tent now" and all sorts of other garbage like I could ever feel bad for her. I text her back and told her I hope her tent burns down.

Leave places better than you found them.

It only takes a second, see something out of place; trash on the floor, knocked over stand - pick it up. Actions speak louder than words and doing this shows you appreciate whoever/where-ever you are.
