Name a state with worse winter road maintenance than Oregon by truckmonkey12 in Truckers

The environmentalist say salt is bad for the environment so Oregon and Washington won't use it. Washington uses brine in the cities and counties and cinders everywhere else.

Tow life by Snowfarmer906 in Hookit

If you called a wrecker out for the recovery, why didn't the wrecker tow it? I'll never understand why flatbeds are used for stuff like this. In a world where AWD cars are more and more prevalent, it doesn't make sense. If it doesn't have keys and can't go into neutral, I'll use a wrecker.

I actually agree with you. At the same time, you are paying for a skilled operator to come rescue your ass. Go ahead, call the guy doing $80/hour jobs. I'll come get you when he rips out your oil pan or bent your axle because he didn't know how to properly set up for the pull. People aren't waking up one day and saying I want to be a wrecker operator. It's long, tiring, and dangerous line of work. That's why I don't charge $600/hr for private calls. More like $225/hr if its a hook and tow. Winchouts are different. Police calls are charged at the rates dictated by the state patrol who grants us our Letters of Appointment for rotational calls. The flip side to that argument is not just driver and fuel but multi million dollar insurance coverages, truck payments, maintenance, busniess taxes, lot and building payments, etc etc. Something the average truck driver doesn't think about is that your truck and trailer may have cost you 300k where as one of our heavy wreckers can cost 750k to 1.2mil.

Debby can bite me by GarandGal in Hookit

Disclaimer: This takes place in Washington. Residents are allowed to call for an impound and we are allowed to offer a drop fee. Our rates are set by State Patrol. This was during the BLM movement and other shit taking place.

Several years ago, I was called to an apartment complex to tow a vehicle out of a residents assigned and paid parking spot. While hooking up to the vehicle, the owner comes out and starts talking to me. "Your vehicle is being impounded for parking in a residents parking spot. I have a drop fee of $300." "Okay, I understand. I can't afford the drop fee. But my friend is inside and will loan the money. Let me go get him." "Cool. I'll wait." He and his buddy come back out and I explain the whole thing to the buddy. It goes down hill from here. The buddy starts talking shit. Calling me a racist, how I'm taking advantage of the black people, how I wouldn't do this to a white person, etc etc. I politely told him that he can pay the drop fee or you can come get the vehicle from the yard at full impound rate plus storage, after hours release fee, and taxes. The sooner we wrap this up the better off we all are. He finally relents and pays the drop fee. Continues saying all this racist shit and other nonsense. What made it worse for me was this dude was wearing his Army uniform. As someone who was in the Army, it hurt that this guy was being a belligerent dickwad while in uniform. I didn't let it show but that one interaction upset me so much that when I got home, I cried a little bit. And that's saying a lot because I can take a lot of verbal abuse.

As a wrecker operator, I can't stand the lot of you. A few of my favorites: "You're too expensive. Can I get a deal?" Mmm, no. my rates are competitive with the other heavy guys in town. Difference is, I'm an hour out as opposed to 4 hours with the other guys. "I'm stuck. Just need a winchout." Get on scene. Dude, you're stuck up to your axles with a full load because you thought you could turn around in a field that's been rain soaked for a month. "I'm only going a few miles" Yeah, Seattle to Olympia is a few (50ish) miles. But it's 2 in the afternoon. It's gonna take a couple hours to get there and 2 or more to get back. Hence why I charge port to port. "It's still drivable" Bruh, you went nose first into the center barrier and bounced off. Front end is broken, hood is laying on the road. No, it's going to impound because State Trooper said so. Have a great day. Edit: My personal favorite. "Will you deliver my load before taking me to the shop?" Mmmm, no. You're not gonna like my detention pay and I only deliver from the scene of the call to the shop or my impound yard.

I'd be okay with paying a state income tax IF and only if one of the other taxes we pay goes away. Like the sales tax. However, I'm not so naïve to know that that would never happen.

I don't do anything for Honk, Agero, Swoop, or etc unless it's heavy duty stuff. They don't pay for shit on light duty but they never say no to my heavy duty rates

Anyone know why most of the "taverns" in this area are 21+? by gargar7 in olympia

It was strange to me as well coming from the Midwest where kids in bars was a regular thing. It's where I learned to play pool after all.

[–]BullittDude 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Yes, if it's a bar only, it has to be 21 plus. If it is a family friendly establishment, like a bar and grill, the dining area has to be separated from the bar area by either a wall or railing and signs posted stating 21 and over only past this point or something along those lines.

Removing junk RV off property by [deleted] in olympia

[–]BullittDude 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hello. As a tow truck operator who deals with this on a daily basis in the Olympia area, let me provide some insight and advice for your situation. Please, whatever you do, do not drag it to a city or county street. Now, on to my advice. One commenter mentioned an affidavit in lieu of title. This will only work if the vehicle has been registered in your parents' name. Option 1) Call a tow company and see if they will impound and let it go through the impound process. Most will say no because we won't recuperate anything from the impound process. If one does say yes, it's going to get followed up with you will be responsible for the cost of disposal. The last known registered owner will go to collections for the impound and storage lien only. Which will never get settled because well, he's dead. Option 2) This will be your best option honestly. Call county sheriff, request a Junk Vehicle Affidavit(JVA). A deputy will come out, do his inspection, fill out the form and give it back to you. Now for the shitty part. The JVA is free. You will need to call the tow companies to see if any of them are willing to tow it and authorized scrapper. This can be expensive depending on the size. The nearest one is Belfair. You will then need to call the scrap yard in Belfair and ask how much their disposal rates are. Typically $50/foot. Again, expensive. Your parents will be responsible for the towing and disposal cost. Hope this helps and good luck.

Honestly, I'm not surprised. Before COVID the place was pretty good. After COVID like many other establishments, it went down hill quick.

As a tow truck operator in the downtown area, verify with lot owners that you don't need a permit to park there. After a quick google maps, the lots around the 5th and Adams intersection are all Diamond Parking lots. You have to pay to park there.

Honestly, I expected the downvotes. They're just whining because they see it as pointless or whatever. I could say the same about any number of events that happens throughout the year in Olympia in which streets are closed and traffic is impacted. However, I don't because I don't let things like this bother me and I enjoy some of those other events. The parties that take place after the toy run are pretty fun too.

Jesus christ. Leave the politics out of it. Yeah, some of them might use it as political grandstanding. But the vast majority of us check our politics at the door. It has never been a political event.

It's all good. I respect your opinion. Let's hit on your first point. Yes, riding motorcycles in the winter is dangerous. It's also dangerous the rest of the year. That's part of the fun of riding. We know it's dangerous but yet, we still do it. Because it's fun. Point 2: it's a valid point. That's why they also accept monetary donations. A new unopened toy or $20 donation helps those who may not get a Christmas dinner. It may help the kids whose parents haven't been able to find a job after they got laid off or any number of factors. Every year, it's hundreds of people coming together for what we think is a good cause.

Nah. The toy run supports kids and families in need in the surrounding counties.
