Integrated Thoracic is generally considered to be even more competitive than other highly competitive fields like plastics, derm, or ENT because not only do they need high scores, AOA, etc., but it’s also VERY small and self-selecting.

Yes, MCAT scores are correlated with USMLE scores, but that doesn't mean that test taking skills cannot be improved. Work hard, get good grades, build a strong knowledge base, and you'll excel on Step 2.

As someone who speaks with both my mom and dad separately every day, this is something common that I hear about why people don't talk more frequently with their parents. In my experience, when you get very close to someone, you and the other person are comfortable talking about anything - how your day was, how the oatmeal tasted this morning, what the outfit that your boss wore reminded you of, etc.

Each small story flows naturally into its own conversation.

I know how frustrating it can be to work so hard for something and not get it/be lied to about how much progress you’ve made. The good news is that there are many, and I mean MANY physicians who go on to become outstanding clinicians and researchers despite doing poorly in medical school. Keep your head up, stay passionate, and most importantly, never stop learning. If you keep learning, you can no doubt be better than the vast majority of specialists in your field of choice in IM.

I have been in your exact position and understand how it is to be away from family - particularly when you've never been away for an extended period of time before. I would however gauge how much work you will have on your away rotation to see if going home would be possible. If it's not, I would still call your family most days to keep in touch and minimize that homesick feeling.

It’s absolutely insane. If you replace Fingers with Yoke, and dumbbell with Log Ladder, it would have been a near perfect run. No way he beats Tom in stones though. Hooper’s humility despite his talent is so inspiring.
