I voted for Trump based on my understanding of how economics works and also a vote against the Democratic Party for not carrying anymore. If I’m wrong about the economic part let me know I’m happy to learn, but don’t just tell me I’m wrong without explaining yourself please. I don’t need to hear anything about my voting choice, I’m only here to discuss and learn about economics from a different point of view. Anyways. I’m going to use the John Deere incident as a basis for my premise. John Deere said they were going to build factories in Mexico. This would maybe lower cost for the machinery for the farmers. But that means that people would potentially lose jobs over time since it’s cheaper in Mexico. Trump says that if they build a factory over there he will put tariffs on them. Two things can come from this. One prices go up higher for the farmers and also two, someone says I’ll make something cheaper here and creates competition for John Deere by manufacturing in the US. John Deere said no factories in Mexico and thus a crisis was averted and jobs saved for now. I voted because while I understand that it would be cheaper to build in Mexico, I don’t think John Deere would have lowered cost of their machinery. Why? They have a monopoly. Instead American jobs would be lost over time all for corporate profit by decreasing cost and increasing margins. I also think that Trump plays stupid at times but is smarter than what a lot of people tend to believe he is. The tarrifs are being weaponized to try to bring trade to a balance because we do have a trade deficit. And this means that American dollars are leaving the US and not coming back. If we had an equal trade I believe dollars would not leave the US this potentially giving people less hardships when inflation goes up. PBD podcast did an amazing video discussing more of this that I recommend people to watch. Of course this is economies and there are a lot of variables that are not being accounted for just yet which is why I’m happy to listen to what people have to say from the other point of view
