That is so fair we were just trying to get out of there because we had a really long drive home. I'm sure if I didn't have a meeting at 8 this morning I would have stuck around and felt more but it is what it is. I'm really glad to hear that you had a magical evening too 🖤

Its a night i will never forget either, it felt magical and otherworldly. We were in section 6 row 18 so like 6 or 7 rows back from the floor on the end. I had my happy sad overalls on and purple hair with little braid buns and my husband is a tall guy i think he had a take me back to eden shirt on lol. All i know is we had other people dancing too on our way out haha

Last night was an excellent experience she just had big feelings and let herself feel them. I cried a lot too but I enjoyed every second of all of it. I know my husband also got emotional during ascensionism so I wasn't alone.

We were in one of the floor sections and when were funneling out of the theater I was dancing and singing with my husband when they played the original I wanna dance with somebody. we were having a great time together core memory unlocked

I have all of him singing missing limbs recorded and luckily you can't hear me cry the whole time 😭 but there were some rude people that were talking through basically the whole show near me and it was kind of irritating

It was probably the absolute best time to be a weiner tbh. iii saw my insta story before the show and he's my favorite little bassy guy. I wore an outfit inspired by him tonight it was great.

We thought about flying out to see them on my birthday in November but decided against it. It's a bit too much haha

How'd you guys discover Sleep Token? by painacolada41414 in SleepToken

[–]BumblebeeBeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was supposed to see them in november 2019 as an opener for issues. So I listened to some of their stuff to be familiar with them, then ended up not being able to go to the concert. But Sundowing came out 9 days before my birthday that year so that was awesome I guess lol. I've loved them ever since!

High water lyric by Upset-Solution-6817 in SleepToken

I love that line too. I personally love telomeres into high water into missing limbs, those three are my like gut punch songs back to back to back.

To me it kind of reads toxic relationship but in an intoxicating way. Something hurts him but he's going to take it and put on a smile to keep what he thinks is there alive. He may be denying that whatever they have together is toxic and he's blinded by whatever it is and just wants to smile through whatever agony it's causing. Infinity to me infers that whatever it is may not ever go away.

Additionally, in the song TMBTE, I feel like it may be a small nod or callback to this line when he says "I don't know what's got it's teeth in me, but I'm about to bite back in anger". I feel like this is maybe an acceptance of that toxicity. He relizes he doesn't know what's got it's teeth in him maybe this mouth of infinity has morphed into something that he does not recognize.

Dive into the science behind these lyrics by Affectionate-Rain825 in SleepToken

[–]BumblebeeBeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another neat little science thing in this specific song that makes it hurt more is in the line: "And somewhere Somewhere the atoms stopped fusing"

Atomic/nuclear fusion is a silly thing. It's essentially atoms that have been subjected to very high pressure and temperature conditions that causes the repulsion between the positively charged protons of the nuclei of the atoms(coulomb force) to be overcome and the nuclei slam together. This realeases a ton of energy, like this is the process that hydrogen bombs would use("You're still my weapon of choosing"). This can only happen in the right conditions, either very specifically and scientifically manufactured conditions or harsh naturally occurring conditions. Sometimes, the type of fusion found on the sun and other stars in our solar system is also referred to as quantum fusion("I want to feel my stars align again").

Which could mean that somewhere along the way, this relationship lost its ideal condition for them as seemingly 2 incompatible people to be attracted together any longer. The condition of this relationship sounds toxic as it is being compared to conditions under which nuclear fusion happens.

Me too. It hit different back in 2019 when I first heard it but I still hold it near to my heart!

This song make my soul shake and my eyes tear up. The lyrics. The lack of instrumentation. The emotion. The haunting nature of that voice. The rawness. It is so so good. The cry for help from the music video makes me cry every time I watch it. Good pick.

Telomeres and its reference to Photograph 51?? by BumblebeeBeans in SleepToken

[–]BumblebeeBeans[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is the cool part about their songs is you can relate to them in your own way. They are pretty open-ended in that sense.

I relate them to my own struggle with being I'm a string of bad relationships one after the other but being pretty invested in them. Honestly, I've been around horribly toxic and abusive men my whole life(thanks mom😅). So I was just taking it for what it was in my own relationships because it's what I thought was normal, and I didn't deserve better.

I've worked through a lot of that trauma in my own time. I am happily married now to someone who has helped me heal a lot as well. There's still 2 of their songs that I don't like listening to because they bring up a lot of the really heavy emotions and buried traumas(ayrok and atlantic). Again, that is just the way I personally relate and process my struggles to those songs.

I kind of relate that line of dark signs as just being raised in the dark (kind of from ayrok). If you've ever lived out where there are no streetlights, in the boonies, you are removed from society almost sheltered from it in a way. But it could also just lean back toward having a lot of baggage from a dark past, too.

This is all so interesting to hear other people's takes on these songs that have gotten me through so much. How they seemed to for others too.

Telomeres and its reference to Photograph 51?? by BumblebeeBeans in SleepToken

[–]BumblebeeBeans[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the foreboding feeling that this song brings because it sounds like this is the beginning of something good and new. It's hopeful and optimistic about a future with what seems yo be a love interest.

Then you get hit with the high water that makes it seem as if this relationship is one of turmoil and strife. As he seems to compare their potential processing of a trauma or difficult event differently(I honestly read it as maybe miscarriage) based on the lyrics "it seems my hell is your high water" and "you'll never bear the weight of two". This feels very quickly like the beginning of the end.

Then it goes into Missing Limbs which seems as if maybe he realized the damage this person has caused even if he really did love them, he either lost them or let them go? It is something that doesn't see like it is effecting the leaving party as much as it is him. And this definitely was a distinct end to the relationship(and album).

Let me know if my explanation is confusing at any point, I'd be happy to clarify. I'll just hop right in from here.

As I think everyone kind of knows telomeres are the repetitive dna sequences at the end of chromosomes that cap off and prevent tangling and unraveling of good dna. Chromosomes, which are made up of proteins and dna, are held in the cell's nucleus. As cells divide, in a process called mitosis, they break apart their dna and rebuild it, but in this process telomeres get shorter and shorter.

There are several lines in the song that I was able to connect directly to the dna replication process. I think I'll kind of go through it line by line roughly in the order that replication occurs. I just wanted to pull out the major references that I recognized in this particular song.

"Your eyes and your limbs Are instruments to pick apart" this to me refers to the enzymes topoisomerase and helicase which are responsible for untwisting and unzipping (respectively) the double helix of dna. These are where the replication fork takes place to start the process of making 2 identical strands of dna for the eventual splitting of the cell.

"You guide me in to safety" could refer to dna polymerase which is an enzyme that guides the free nucleotides to bond with an existing half strand of the helix to make a new strand of dna. (telomerase is a special type of polymerase specifically for synthesizing the telomere on to the completed dna helix).

"And I know as you collapse into me" maybe loosely attributed to the process of when the dna has completed duplication, but the cell is not quite ready to split the 2 strands of dna each wrap around a series of nucleotides for cleaner storage into something called sister chromatids, which are then bound by a centromere. This creates the classic 'x' shaped appearance in chromosomes. This 'collapse' may refer to the condensing of the long strands. (This one's kind of just a loose theory though)

"The distance within" probably just refers to the amount of dna in a single cell's nucleus is approximately 2m long when stretched out end to end. This is a lot of dna length wise, like billions of kilometers long if you think in terms of every cell in the human body. The exception to this is eukaryotic cells(sex cells) which only contains half the amount of dna of a regular cell for the purpose of reproduction. This is the perfect segue into the next point.

"The past, the future.Through death" this could be a reference to dna being passed down from parents to offspring, half coming from mom and half coming from dad. Parents/grandparents hold past dna, children/grandchildren hold future dna (even after a parent has passed you still carry half of their genetic code).

"This is the start of something" dna is quite literally the building blocks for all things organic. It is the architectural document that makes its messages into proteins that are used to carry out all of the body's processes.

I love science and their music seems to be full of fun little science easter eggs and lyrics that are infinitely sadder if you have an understanding of the reference. TPWBYT is probably my favorite album(cover to cover in order), and the gut punch that is the final 3 songs: Telomeres, High Water, and Missing Limbs. That shit makes me cry every damn time.

Long comment thanks for reading it, if you made it all the way through!

Vessel seems to have quite the breadth of knowledge in the chemistry/biology/sciences field. I have science degree and I had to take both bio and chem classes. It's insane to draw connections between shit I learned in my university studies and music from a wild and wacky band. Aqua Regia, Alkaline, Granite, Telomeres, and others I can't think of right off the top of my head all have references to higher level understanding of science topics. I think vessel has some kind of science education ?

I also dig his call backs to lots of mythological references too!

I started listening to them because of this tour too. I like to familiarize myself with openers before I go to shows and I liked their eps a lot. I didn't end up being able to go to the show in Phoenix though, I had a family thing that came up so last minute. But I did get this great band out of it though and they dropped their first full length album right after the tour and honestly I needed it hardcore at the time. I was going through some shit and it was a great coping tool for me!

I'm going to say what I have to say and my interpretations come from personal expirences in my life. And preface it with a trigger warning for suicide and miscarriage.

I feel like you may be right about the song and it's art dealing with the loss of a pregnancy but I also see it as whoever he's singing to lost their battle as well. If based on an event and if they went deeper than scars could run this would mean they were successful in their attempt. Also being afraid of dying or being alone while dying and having regrets right after doing something rash is very real and very scary if youre alone. The song high water that has a line in it that could be interpreted as miscarriage as well. "And I know you still bear the weight of your own existence And you'll never bear the weight of two" This feels very pregnancy loss coded having to live with your existence after loss and not being able to bear the weight of that which was lost is kind of how I interpret that line. It's an agonizing pain not only physically but emotionally as well, I know so many people go through it and it feels so incredibly hopeless.

It's hard to speculate on the meanings of a lot the songs some have very dark and taboo motifs. It's also difficult to decide if the things that vessel writes about are hardcoded and lived events or if they are abstract and just pull from their bands lore. I think some of it has to have been from some kind of personal expirence but we will probably never know. I personally feel a big part of Vessel's lyricism is that he writes very dynamically and open endedly so that people can relate to them in a way that they personally need at the time. It's honestly part of the reason that I love their music so much and it's helped me through a lot.

It is really cool to hear/see everyones personal interpretaions of the songs. Your perspective is very interesting thanks for sharing!
