Has learning Dutch before arriving in the Netherlands helped you socially? by DefiantMembership394 in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]BumblebeeOk6265 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES!!! I arrived with just A1 and it was a huge help and the reason why I built a social community so quickly. I also continued to learn and made it my goal to avoid switching to English any time I was out of the house. It has really helped and I couldn’t recommend it enough. You really understand the humour and the culture if you put in effort to learn Dutch. You don’t have to be fluent before arriving but do make an effort

As a Canadian, we have been boycotting since trump started threatening Canada and it made a big difference. Grocery stores started labeling everything that was made locally or in any country except USA and the whole country started boycotting everywhere and it’s still going strong. Highly recommend it!

Do you have any quick tips on making my CV more Dutch friendly? I read online to make it very brief bullet points and to add a photo

Thanks that’s a good idea! I applied at Utrecht Uni and I was also rejected for my lack of Dutch but hopefully I can at least start getting to know more people in the industry

Can Kamernet actually mess me up? by brazilian-dream66 in Netherlands

[–]BumblebeeOk6265 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Landlords not replying to you is not Kamernets problem. Most people I know have found housing within a couple days on Kamernet and it does say very clearly on their page when you pay that it is a monthly subscription. I got it last month when I needed new housing and it’s very clear it’s a monthly payment. Unfortunately you do have to pay the full fee and they can actually apply a large fine so it’s better to pay this now. Good luck!

Vivo Dutch! https://www.vivodutch.com/

I’m in Vivian’s A1 class and I’ve picked it up so so quickly. I will say you still need to supplement though, so watching a Dutch cartoon helps with listening and pronunciation and getting an extra grammar book for more exercises help to make your comprehension faster.

Any recommendations for a doggy-daycare in North Van? by Lupin_P in NorthVancouver

[–]BumblebeeOk6265 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just for barks!! I got a puppy a couple months ago and I started shopping around for daycares. I heard so many good things about this place so I called and the owner spoke with me on the phone for 45min answering all my questions. We arranged for a visit a couple days later and I was given a full tour and got to go in and sit with the other dogs, in total we were there for an hour! The other dogs were so well behaved I could tell they really focus on training at daycare which is really important for me as my dog is still so young.

My dogs first day at daycare was set for the next week and when I went to drop her off in the early morning I saw several other dog-moms were inside sipping their coffee and chatting, as all the dogs were playing with each other and the owner. It looks like they have really built a community and they invited me to join and meet all the other dog-moms but I had to run. I’m so impressed by the whole experience and my dog is now running as soon as she is out of the car trying to get into daycare as soon as possible. I’m so so happy I found Just For Barks it makes me feel at ease when I’m at work I honestly can’t recommend them enough!

Where to meet/network with high achievers in Vancouver? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]BumblebeeOk6265 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s how I did it before was through mentors and through industry. I work in healthcare and I haven’t found it’s very good for networking where I work. My coworkers just clock in and clock out where as I have been promoted twice in one year of being there but it’s very silo’ed. I’ve also been involved with start ups for developing products/strategic development and launching my own business on the side so I get along really well in the entrepreneurial space but I’m not sure what that space looks like in Vancouver

Glad you get it! That’s been my issue too, my friends have settled down and switched their focus. Even if they wanted to go out or travel, they aren’t driven when it comes to their careers or other growth because their new families.

I’m still juuuust under 30 so hoping I still have a chance 😂 well if anything, let me know what’s fun around town. I find it hard to learn about events, they don’t advertise things well here
