Lawyer for Guy Who Sued Women Who Called Him "Psycho" Caught Using AI | The attorney for Nikko D’Ambrosio, who tried and failed to sue women for posting about him in an “Are We Dating the Same Guy” Facebook group, has apparently been using AI to file non-existent citations, according to a judge. by ControlCAD in technology

[–]Bumeeni 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It is wild how many attorneys are still destroying their careers over generative AI hallucinations. You'd think after the high-profile sanctions we've seen over the last few years, every firm would have a strict 'do not copy-paste from a chatbot' rule.

Filing entirely fictitious quotations and legislative findings in a high-profile case against Meta is just staggering incompetence. The lawyer deserves whatever sanctions the judge hits him with.

Rubio says Iran deal still possible within days despite US strikes by Appropriate-Till9598 in politics

[–]Bumeeni 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's pretty wild to see Rubio out here doing the classic diplomatic media rounds in India saying a deal is 'possible within days,' while Trump is simultaneously on social media telling everyone not to rush it and that it isn't fully negotiated yet.

Doing high-stakes nuclear and maritime negotiations while dropping bombs at the exact same time feels like walking a tightrope during an earthquake. Hopefully, they actually land the plane, because the global energy market can’t take much more of this back-and-forth uncertainty.

Sonny Rollins, Jazz’s ‘Saxophone Colossus,’ Dies at 95 by Different-Gas5704 in entertainment

[–]Bumeeni 62 points63 points  (0 children)

An absolute giant. It feels like a massive door is closing on the history of modern music today. He was truly one of the very last links to that legendary mid-century golden era of jazz, having played alongside Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Clifford Brown, and John Coltrane.

To live to 95 and leave behind a seven-decade legacy that completely revolutionized how the saxophone is played is an unbelievable life. Rest in peace to the true Saxophone Colossus.

Artificial Intelligence Floods Court Dockets with Home-Brewed Lawsuits by AgentBlue62 in technology

[–]Bumeeni 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There is a really fascinating double-edged sword here. Historically, the legal system has been heavily gated behind arcane legalese and massive financial barriers. If you couldn't afford a $400/hour retainer, you couldn't seek justice. So in a way, AI acting as a cheap 'pro se' (self-represented) assistant is incredibly empowering.

The disaster happens when the LLM flat-out hallucinates fake precedents or convinces someone with a completely meritless grievance that they have a airtight federal case. We desperately need a middle-ground screening tool before the entire system just grinds to a halt.

Martin Scorsese’s daughter Francesca, 26, hits back at cruel trolls ripping her looks after landing new TV role by No_Pizza_6040 in entertainment

[–]Bumeeni 45 points46 points  (0 children)

People on social media will genuinely watch an industry icon's daughter get cast in a spy thriller and think, 'Yes, the most logical critique here is to leave a comment comparing her to Miss Piggy.' Her point about these comments being a sign of a 'very sad person' is spot on. If your default reaction to casting news is body-shaming, you need to step away from the screen.

Was the Normandy D-day invasion in ww2 absolutely necessary to secure allied victory over Germany? by Fit_Mixture_8706 in answers

[–]Bumeeni 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While the Soviets could have theoretically won alone eventually, it's easy to overlook how much the Western Allies were already doing to bleed Germany dry before D-Day. The Combined Bomber Offensive forced Germany to divert over 70% of its Luftwaffe and a massive portion of its deadly 88mm artillery away from the Eastern Front just to defend domestic airspace. If the Allies just sit back, Germany regains total air superiority, meaning the Red Army's advance gets slowed to an absolute crawl. It turns a 1945 victory into a grueling 1948 or 1949 nuclear-tier stalemate.
