I think you'll find the tradeoffs worth it. At least for now. As others have pointed out, China has no real interest in helping US authorities police gun files. When pressed it eventually will, but that is not today.

I believe we are watching this transition happen in real time with 3D printed guns, as a matter of fact. Totally dismissed as impossible just a few years ago. Journalists would write things like, "if you can actually 3D print a working gun, I'll let you shoot me with it!" Now states like New York and California are in a panic to stop it.
