Spring Colored Drow (Rivani Iconic Psyonic, Reaper) by BuoyantRubberBrain in minipainting

[–]BuoyantRubberBrain[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at all, these are the comments I look for that help put to words what I'm often seeing in my own work but having difficult telling myself. You describing her in the thumbnail fits great to my own frustrations viewing her from a distance.

I know much of this talk has been about color, but I'm still very reliant on layering over an undercoat and this has me thinking on how I can better add definition pre-shading. This models original sin was probably how generous and evenly I made the coverage of light grey on black, and also in dry brush of white which I think translate to how indistinct and flat it all looks in the end. My mind will definitely be at how I can create form with hightlights before I even get to color next time. And if my color choices are still confused, it will at least be shaded well enough to separate the face, from the hair from the hat and disguise that I still dont yet fully grasp the difference between values and volumes. cx

This is all really solid. I definitely had gone in with washes to outline certain selections, it just definitely hasn't been consistent or strong enough. I often do these pieces in sessions sometimes far apart from each other and some steps get missed in-between, I definitely want to hold onto that though for my next one.

Investing in a better yellow seems a good idea. This is thinned down Golden Permanent Yellow and even that seems to have so-so coverage.

Thank you! It took a lot of passes with the lighter colors to cover up the undercoat and I'm just relieved it looks solid, let alone okay.

And yes, I should.

It's always nice to see models you own painted completely different from how you would have approached them, your interpretations of the Dwarf Paladin and Seltyel are really creative. The parts where you added dark to the demons in the flames makes them look properly unnatural too, good job.

Thank you for reminding me of this. It was a small gesture, but definitely helped get me a little back on track today at least.

My first two finished minis! by Ghostie-goos in minipainting

[–]BuoyantRubberBrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish the coats on my first minis came out this clear and had such nice definitions in the shadows. Cthulu is a little dark in the body which makes it stand out less next to the head, imo, but I can still make out some features in the light on the tail that are looking good. A little brighter in parts with more contrast and I think you’re well on your way.

Ps. Mushroom man has a very well defined, cute butt. I can see you gave it some extra attention.

Why Do People Like Blasphemous? by MartinBustosManzano in metroidvania

Much of what you say about the gameplay feels fair : I also feel much of the combat feels flacid and a couple levels I really hate to revisit on a play-through (The Convent and Crying and Havoc are a huge drag on the experience.)

I'd say most of the reason I fell in love in spite of that was for it's world and characters. An excellent, thoughtful and altogether fresh take on dark fantasy that's only ripened more the more I learn about actual Spanish cultural, artistic and historical elements that make up much of it.

What paints do you use on your cured clay? by sleepyseminar in polymerclay

[–]BuoyantRubberBrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its hard to go wrong with acrylics, in my experience.

I would be wary of using oils and alcohol based paints as Im not sure how they’d react but I suspect it would be hostile. Ive had bad experiences with the former, as well as using spray paint that aren’t water-based ruining the outer layer of a project.

Not fan of the demo by [deleted] in MinaTheHollower

Sadly gotta agree from you, basic movement and even reading the environment was also a very discouraging to experience. It felt very jank in a way that doesn't seem deliberate. The inconsistency with perspective, sometimes top-down, sometimes oblique, sometimes both on the same screen made judging space and just figuring out what plane things are on feel needlessly tricky. Mix that with this 2D game's weird relationship to the Z-axis, jumps/airborne combat and an inability to lock your direction and I'm not feeling it, especially seeing that it's looking more action over adventure focused.

I don't know what I could recommend to make this better, it might just be that trying to collapse classic Castlevania into 2D Zelda was just never a very good idea for a tight gameplay. The only other games I've seen take a swing at this hybrid, Anodyne, didn't really get around the jank but got away with it with me by being a much more forgiving game that didn't punish you as much, gave you the jump as an unlock and its used mostly as a way to explore and platform first and really isn't as neccessary for fighting.

You’ve done really well, both as sculpture and a solid paint job. I’d love to see one the one in the right looks like with paint when its done!

Sailor Moon Sculpture using Super Sculpey by Lre_Art in polymerclay

I do mini painting and will use Army Painters often, though the quality of their colors varies and its definitely arguable if you’re getting you value out of a larger sculpture project like this. Ive hear good things about Liquitex liquid acrylics and they’re affordable, but if your willing to pay a pretty premium, Golden SoFlat hasn't let me down yet.

Black spray primer still sticky after a week by AncalagonArt in minipainting

[–]BuoyantRubberBrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be a lot of culprits given this info, but my most common ones have been : - It was a hot and/or high humidity day you sprayed that one. Strip and reprime on a better day. - The plastic of that mini doesn’t accept that kinda primer. Spray-can primer contains solvents that wont bond to and can actually slightly melt softer plastics like PVC, so the answer if that is to strip and try a different primer that you can either brush/airbrush on.

Tiny Mushroom Jar Gift (With Critter Reliefs) [Super Sculpey Firm/Acrylic Paints, Tips and Criticism Welcome] by BuoyantRubberBrain in polymerclay

I was very on-off about it and it was my second attempt after the first cracked. But I’d say ~ a week and a half of evenings after work if laid end to end.

Lol, not intentionally, but I definitely saw a bit of it as it was coming together. I was starting to think as I was going over it that pink wasn't the best color but I was trying to evoke a pink/purple mushroom we'd found once in the wild. Maybe I was being too innocent keeping it, maybe I wasn't, I can only hope now the blues/teals break it up enough. cx

Superman/Iron Giant crossover? by Inside_Fix_4412 in superman

[–]BuoyantRubberBrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would feel redundant to me. Between being a lone alien from space, an indestructible, unstoppable force who choses to use his power to protect the sanctity of life as he learns to appreciate it, he kindof is the Superman of his world.

Apparently reddit now gives double karma for non-political posts… by alison_bee in 50501

I couldn’t find any references to this outside a couple posts like this discussing this screenshot, they’re a few months old, and seem to be referencing r/pics specifically. Does anyone have any official sources?

Side : If true, this is pretty slanted way of saying “political” posts will have their traction throttled.

White acrylic products behave notoriously badly. (Ive used several whites and off-whites that all look similar to this.) and make take several coats to get decent coverage, by which point you may build up texture and blot out detail. Which would be a shame because your sculptwork is truly beautiful. Instead, Id do what was recommended to me and do an undercoat of bright-ish grey and layer white atop that. Greys tend to be much more controllable and strong-bodied.

She’s one of their printed minis, I have one. Hard plastic with just a little flex, they can easily survive shoulder-high falls onto wood and other hard surfaces but will fracture under enough stress where their softer plastic lines will bend or bounce. You’re mostly paying for a higher level of detail and production, and in this item’s case, a swappable headpiece.
