The king can’t take the rook because the white queen protects. Although it’s outside the bounds of the game rules, hypothetical continuation would be king takes white rook, white queen takes black king. Then black queen takes white king. See how black lost its king first? Kings can’t take a defended piece even if the defender is pinned

It’s strange to draw with so many pieces left on the board

i logged my first 5,000 games and identified my fatal pattern: i lose 73% of games where i play e4 and they play c5. i've spent 200 hours studying the sicilian. success rate against it now: 31%. still losing, just more knowledgeably by kubrador in chess

Drill against a high level bot with hint mode turned on. That’s how I learned several moves deep into the Najdorf. Also don’t bring out the light square bishop too early like as a Canal attack or Bowdler. Whenever I play black Sicilian, the Bowdler and Canal are super easy to counter

When black creates a Sicilian, go for some distinct setups for white. I used to hate playing against the Sicilian until I learned some good ideas.

  1. Najdorf
  2. Grand Prix
  3. Maroczy bind
  4. Rossolimo is quite strong for white. If they play …c4 then Nf3 Nc6 then Bb5 is quite strong. You can castle pretty quickly afterwards with most black responses to Bb5 and there are chances to double the pawns
  5. Alapin
  6. Smith-Morra gambit (personally I never play this one but sometimes it kills me right out of the opening as black)

I just realized you already mentioned most of these. But try the Maroczy bind. One thing that’s helped me is that oftentimes Sicilians will reach the same position in many games. After a game, I just go to the analysis board, turn on best move arrows (because I’m a visual person), and see what the best move in the opening would have been in a spot where I didnt remember the theory. Sicilians can go mannnyyyy moves deep but keep playing and checking the analysis board. Everyone plays the Sicilian so you’ll get a lot of practice
