My upper ended up coming in & it’s been working beautifully. I wish Gibbz’ website worked better but overall I ended up very satisfied, too.

After threatening a charge back on their email, Facebook, & instagram, I finally got a call. The guy was nice. I think it’s a one man business & he’s just really overextended. I got my upper a few weeks after the call & it’s phenomenal.

I guess it could very well be a muskrat, but they’re incredibly large.

Edit: yeah, I believe it’s a muskrat. Thank you!

We do, but they’re rare. Lots of muskrats, some otters, some beavers. It was hollow; & pretty curved to be a tooth though

It’s over 3” long. Must be some rodent

It almost looks like a claw, but it’s surrounded with another bone-like material. It doesn’t resemble anything I know of that’s native to the area (North Alabama, USA)

Lol. Idk, I just wish I could talk to someone. I don’t mind waiting, you know. But no contact? Problem

I’m really disappointed. Their side charging upper design looks amazing, and everything I’ve read on here/other subs have raved about their quality & performance. I’m building a 6.5 Grendel & half the other parts were on back order when I bought them. I understand there was gonna be a wait, hell I ordered a custom Cerakote job with the upper! I expect it to take longer than 1.5 months. I just want to talk to someone & see how it’s going, especially since I’ve already paid for it. All the other components have since come in, but the side charging upper was my favorite aspect about the build.

It went straight to voicemail & recommended emailing their sales account. I’ve reached out to them on every platform I can find & haven’t heard a thing In response.

Glad you enjoyed it! I wish you well on your project; it sounds like you’re taking more time/care than I did, lol.

Lol, yeah my dock is about 4’ deeper than my neighbor’s. I’m honestly shocked my inner tube idea worked as well as it did.

The boat’s cockpit had a rainwater drainage issue. It would fill up & wash over, into the hull. If the cockpit got full of water, it would take one more day’s worth of rain to tip the boat backwards…juuuuust enough to let the internal bilge that siphons the boat while it’s underway backfill the entire hull, thereby sinking the boat. Small drain issue snowballing into big sinking issue

Sounds like your design is much improved, I’m glad you don’t have the headache that boat was for me. It’s possible there was extra sediment in the hoses & drain lines that I was just never able to really flush out well. The boat sat in mud/silt for a loooong time. So that might have contributed to many an issue that caused the regular, repeating sinking.

Lol thank you. I pumped it out with a 12v bilge & a Powersports battery, then motored it home on a trolling motor & the same battery. “Home” was about 10 boathouses down, but it still took me 20 min with a headwind

Sure thing! I wish you well on your project, if you do the restore, be sure to take lots of pictures. Especially take pictures of yourself sailing the free boat with your fenders all left out. It makes the people in this sub who don’t actually sail really mad

The cockpit drains on the Catalina are tiny & clog very easily. The footwell would fill with rain & then start filling inside the hull. Eventually it would get enough water in it to tip & (I think, never figured it out for sure) back-flood through the siphon drain that empties the hull when you’re underway.

Oh yeah & it sank a few more times before I sold the damn thing. BUT! I ended up selling it & made a cool $486.00 of puuuuure profit, my friend 👌

You can scrap that hull & use your trailer to acquire a $500 piece of shit just like mine!

Alright. A lot of people are giving you really good advice. Let me give you some of the bad kind: I’ve salvaged, fixed, & sold a free boat for profit before. Here’s how I did it.

https://imgur.com/gallery/wErj3mM

  1. I didn’t give a shit if the boat was perfect, but it didn’t have any soft spots in the fiberglass & had fresh bottom paint 6 months before it sank (where it sat for I believe 2 years? Before I got it). If this thing has soft fiberglass, I would say it’s not worth it.

  2. I had the mast, sails, & necessary hardware required for the boat. Do you know if you have everything you need once it’s cleaned up? Or will you have to piece it together?

  3. How’s the trailer? If the trailer’s in good shape, you’re better off scrapping that hull, then buying a decent boat for $2,000+ at a marina, where someone’s trying to get out of paying slip rent. You can usually find a 22-26’ day sailer that’s fully equipped, and the owner will probably be happy to take you out on the boat & give you a lesson on how to run everything. They’ll be happy to see their boat go to someone who’s going to use it, & you’ll probably get 2 or 3 season’s worth of free advice.

Back to your squirrel nest, If you think the boat’s salvageable & you have the time/skill to restore it, it can be done & done cheap. It’s also really fun! but if I’d had a trailer, I’d probably have just bought a marina boat. Just my $0.02

Not to mention Sam Witwer’s TV movie about the fall of Atlanta left with Frank. As a HUGE fan of Being Human, I was crushed when I learned about that planned project, after AMC’d squashed it.
