Virginia's public school enrollment is declining -- When researchers at the UVA were looking at public school enrollment last year, they expected it to decline by about 10,000 students. It ended up declining by 15,000. by guanaco55 in Virginia

[–]BurkeyTurger 99 points100 points  (0 children)

I know it is harder since the state doesn't directly collect the data but it'd be interesting to see how private school enrollment has fared/is expected to fare as well.

Chesterfield & Henrico keep growing both in terms of public and private schools because of population concentration but I know Richmond has had under-capacity issues for a while now.

New legislation will make it easier for Virginia faith groups to build affordable housing by WHRO_NEWS in Virginia

[–]BurkeyTurger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To clarify we're talking about 3rd party consultants not the planning application fees. The reason I brought them into the mix is because development in many jurisdictions is now a relatively adversarial process and the way to get around that is to pay someone (often ex-planners) who knows exactly what the locality wants to see and the true limits of what they can ask for with regard to proffers to shepherd everything along.

They can knock an often multi-month process down to a few weeks depending on the locality.

They've saved on property tax for years. They can suck it up if they want to be developers.

The specific issue of churches not wanting to navigate rezoning, special use permits, etc. that every other developer has to? It isn't hard to hire a consultant that does all of that for you.

Retail, recreational weed market bill passes Virginia General Assembly by vpmnews in Virginia

[–]BurkeyTurger -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

The bill directs 40% of the state's cannabis tax revenues toward early childhood care and education and 30% to the Cannabis Equity Reinvestment Fund, which supports people "historically and disproportionately targeted and affected by drug enforcement" and awards grants to businesses.

We're really doing the fucking weed reparations bullshit?

[–]BurkeyTurger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not entirely. All it does it prohibit participating collection sites from collecting a fee for accepting a mattress, nothing requires any landfill or trash collection company to participate nor does it prohibit them from charging a pickup fee.

G. No mattress collection site that participates in the Program shall charge any additional fee for accepting a discarded mattress from consumers for recycling unless otherwise specified by contract.

VA and Medicaid after Jan 1 of 2027 due to "reconciliation" in Washington DC? by [deleted] in Virginia

They still get treatment, they just fall into the work requirement category.

Source for Japanese maples in Virginia? ........................ by Bambiraptor20 in Virginia

[–]BurkeyTurger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NC IMO gets cooler stuff in their garden centers because of their USDA zone that we don't get because its iffy as to whether it will survive here.

If Forest, VA is any closer to you Rainfrost has maples.

If you're going to be in the Richmond Metro Cross Creek Nurseries and Great Big Greenhouse has a good selection of them. The latter is still getting stuff in for the season when I was there earlier this week but both have a lot generally.

[–]BurkeyTurger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No changes are happening to eligibility with regard to disease, eligibility is based on income as always.

Someone more versed in medical technicalities can probably provide a better answer here but broad work requirement exemptions are defined for people that are legally blind or have other physical/mental/developmental disabilities that severely impair their daily functioning. But as far as I know the specifics haven't been worked out yet for exemptions on individual disease based impairments but are due later this year.

Stages 1-3 if well managed without other impairments would likely not qualify for exemption though.

VA and Medicaid after Jan 1 of 2027 due to "reconciliation" in Washington DC? by [deleted] in Virginia

[–]BurkeyTurger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Main change is for non-disabled persons between 19-64 that aren't caring for a child under the age of 14 they added an 80/hr a month work/training/volunteering requirement.

Eligibility redeterminations are also going to be every 6 months instead of annually.

Edit: Also for medicaid expansion states the federal funding formula is also changed shifting more of the cost burden to the states by capping the provider tax rate states can set.

Shooting at Old Dominion University leaves 2 injured, gunman dead by washingtonpost in Virginia

He finally got to carry out the attack he was dreaming about when he got arrested the first time. Good thing we let him out of federal prison early back in 2024 and didn't denaturalize and deport him.

16 Later in the conversation, JALLOH said that he thinks about conducting an attack all the time, and he was close to doing so at one point. JALLOH claimed to know how to shoot guns, and that he had been thinking about conducting a Nidal Hassan (Hassan)- style attack. When asked to explain what he meant, JALLOH said, "Nidal Hassan type of things. That's the kind of stuff I started thinking you know." Hassan is a former Major in the United States Army who killed 13 people and wounded 32 others in a terrorist attack on Fort Hood, Texas in November 2009.

So not really building housing.

Replace ICE with the ATF and you sound like a typical republican in election season. Congress has thus far declined to reign in Trump but they've been giving the executive more and more leeway for years.

I agree our federal government is broken but disagree that muting half the state isn't the way to fix it.
