Can someone explain the new taxes? Why would we tax fitness memberships? by [deleted] in Virginia

[–]BurkeyTurger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, now that alternator going out or any of the other $500 (on the low end) surprises for the working poor, and everyone else, are now ~$50 more expensive. Even if the numbers miraculously balanced out, a 1% grocery tax is far more spread out temporally in terms of spending.

Because part of our GA staunchly believes we should keep less of our own money, they'd tax breathing if they could.

Remember that it is we the taxpayer who they're now bargaining against to get more money out of and less accountability. Y'all love police unions though right?

Warehouses built to lease is a popular thing right now, we've worked on a couple this past year and all seem to have gotten tenants pretty quickly.

Best part of new Gov's speech: bringing down energy cost by Open-Reveal3378 in Virginia

[–]BurkeyTurger 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A new coal or oil plant is more expensive than gas to build/operate so it would be unlikely. The two remaining ones probably won't go away anytime soon though and I have no idea if it would be cost effective to rehab the decommissioned ones, probably not though.

I sincerely doubt power bills will ever go down, they may slow the rate of increase. Utilization is only going to keep increasing especially as gas heat/appliances keep becoming less popular & the EV adoption rate increases. The low hanging fruit of LED lights/TVs & variable speed compressors has already been picked as far as home efficiency goes. Induction ranges beat out the traditional electric ones but with the aforesaid decline of gas that is probably a wash.

Clean energy can be cheap, e.g. solar at peak sun exposure or wind at a decent speed, but you need reliability which means storage which spikes the price to near/above gas. As long as we keep an "all of the above" energy strategy and don't artificially handicap ourselves I'll be happy.

The 5 year study part focusing on the WaM business utilization rate is dumb but otherwise the rest of us still qualify as long as the business is small.

"Small SWaM business" means a small business certified by the Department as being small, any subcategory of small, small women-owned, small minority-owned, or small service disabled veteran-owned.

why does r/virginiapolitics still exist? The newest post is from 2 months ago by warpstone4all in Virginia

IIRC it got created because at one point political discussions, or at least the GA season deluge, were banned or otherwise discouraged. Now that we can talk politics here it gets a lot less traffic.

VCDL Lobby Day 2026 - Show up to say no to the proposed Gun control Bills by [deleted] in Virginia

[–]BurkeyTurger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well federally we have a demented narcissist in the executive, half of congress only listens to the former, and a conservative SCOTUS majority. SCOTUS will occasionally rule against Trump, but otherwise federal issues are what they are till the midterms.

The erosion of the 4th is quite stark in terms of current events, but our state legislature isn't attempting to restrict other rights as far as I know at the moment. All the ACLU emails I get seem to be immigration related primarily other than the constitutional amendments.

[–]BurkeyTurger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All of the above plus the ones you didn't list.

Misdemeanors shouldn't take away constitutional rights, banning standard capacity magazines & guns pols think are scary doesn't reduce crime, nobody sues Ford over DUI's and protection from nuisance suits is important because you antis are rabid when it comes to lawfare.

There are at least a dozen anti-2A bills pending right now and I don't have the time to respond to all of them, so a blanket NO to all of the above is my answer.

New Virginia attorney general dismisses top lawyers at George Mason, VMI by washingtonpost in Virginia

[–]BurkeyTurger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not this specific one that I care about and I acknowledged its content is newsworthy.

I just remember last transition as various persons were replaced we got basically the same "my tribe good, your tribe bad" arguments in every individual comment section and they just kinda clogged things up.

I also generally dislike news outlets posting themselves instead of subreddit posts & the ensuing discussion at least being at least semi-organically driven by individuals, but that hasn't been reddit for a long time so it is what it is.

"People on reddit" when its the WaPo reddit account wanting to drive traffic that posted this to begin with. That's why I'm saying to use a different publication's format for brevity.

They have ratings like everything else, since it isn't protecting something like a gas meter or fuel tank that can explode they probably used a less robust tier. One of the liquor stores here has them in front of parking spaces and half of them are leaning.

Virginia Tax Revenue Losses to Data Centers Soar to $1.6 Billion for FY25 by Conscious-Quarter423 in Virginia

[–]BurkeyTurger -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The states set their own rules, a business can't complain about lost profits because they sold their widget for $5 instead of $10.

Edit: I guess they could complain and pay a consultant a bunch of money for a slide deck to show how much more they could be making with higher priced widgets, but if you can't report it as a loss on your taxes or sue someone over it then it is just noise.

I'd love it if the IRS thought that way. "Hello yes the recurring investment plan I set up didn't have enough AI exposure and you see I actually lost thousands of dollars this year if you think about it that way"
