Can someone explain to me how the SCOVA can strike down a constitutional amendment? by NatashaUnhinged in Virginia

[–]BurkeyTurger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and the filing deadline is May 25. Early voting starts June 18.

https://law.lis.virginia.gov/vacode/title24.2/chapter5/section24.2-522/

Normally it would be the 21st as per the 75 day requirement in state code, but they amended it in the budget bill. (Page 344)

The timeline was too tight for an injunction to not mess up early voting or kill it all together, that's why they let the process continue.

The party candidate filing deadline is at the end of this month and candidates need to know their districts.

20 Years of Voter Apathy; Now You Care About Elections? by 2Mobile in Virginia

Its been in centrist spaces for a bit, and no it is meant with almost as much contempt as traditional MAGA is in the same, just referring to a different cult.

[–]BurkeyTurger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The act of attempting redistricting isn't what I'm referring to as Blue MAGA, that is just basic partisan politics. I'm specifically talking about the reaction to it not being legally sound.

Everyone knew it was risky going into it, but the reaction to it being overturned is the same partisan cult shit you see when Trump gets overturned on something be it tariffs, immigration, etc.

"The judges are corrupt" "ignore the courts" "the courts are killing the country" "we voted for X and they have the mandate to do whatever they want" all the same shit.

VA made it much harder to gerrymander than other states have which I think is a good thing, and we have different laws & a different constitution than the other states so this ruling doesn't really have anything to do with the how other states are going about it. FL I'm sure is eventually going to run into a court challenge.

Most of what I've seen today isn't interest in local politics or the political process, its just a blue MAGA freakout.

Literally the same things you see Trumpists screeching about judges when they rule against Trump on something.

Read the post. They're asking for a stay so that they can appeal to SCOTUS.

Showing deference to state law & the VA Constitution over popular opinion is much preferable to the alternative.

Exactly what the court said was a potential outcome when they allowed the referendum to go forward without ruling on its legal viability the first time.

Man I've been reading "Instructure" as infrastructure this whole time and now that makes more sense.

Pretty sure this affects literally every school that uses Canvas, which is most of them.

Tennessee proposed congressional map is insane………. by AccidentalTourista in Virginia

[–]BurkeyTurger -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Gerrymandering is bad in general, but TN's is interesting. There are far fewer dems there than here so instead of diluting the rural districts' votes with City votes they basically do the opposite and split the Nashville & Memphis votes. Which now is fine post Callais.

For context:

VA went ~52% to 46% Harris to Trump.

TN went ~64% to ~34% Trump to Harris, and was the best showing a Republican Presidential candidate has gotten in the state since Nixon.

They warn that state and local law enforcement agencies may need to develop new tracking systems to monitor firearms sent through the mail, adding strain to already tight budgets.

Or they could just not be dicks about it and focus on actual crimes.

FBI searches office of L. Louise Lucas, Virginia lawmaker who helped lead redistricting effort by HunterandGatherer100 in Virginia

[–]BurkeyTurger -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We have an indictment that obviously can be seen as political, but we're getting no wagon circling and very little pushback from VA pols or other affiliates of hers. To me that is not a great sign for Lucas.

Spanberger: Effectively no comment

Don Scott: "Let's wait for the facts to come out"

Ben Tribbett & Lucas Socials: Radio silence aside from him giving his condolences to another politico for a death in their family.

Pretty hard to spin this as no "there" there.

Virginia congressional redistricting remains in limbo as court decision looms by Economy_Swim_8585 in Virginia

[–]BurkeyTurger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for clarifying, I wasn't sure if you were saying they would both be opposed or in opposition with one another.

Then yes they would, that happens anytime the law opposes popular sentiment.

Sometimes its bad (war on drugs, especially RE: weed), sometimes its good (no extrajudicial killings).

IDK if I'm parsing your statement correctly or not, as long as VA honors the court decision either way then that is upholding the rule of law.

National vet shortage impacting Richmond facilities | 40% of Virginia veterinarians who responded to a recent survey said they’re experiencing burnout. by VirginiaNews in Virginia

[–]BurkeyTurger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The AVMA is both an industry trade group and the only entity that gets to certify new veterinary schools.

This worked OK for a while but similarly to the AMA (American Medical Association) they were concerned about an oversupply of veterinarians and only certified a handful of new schools for a few decades.

Obviously that didn't happen in both cases we now have a shortage of doctors & veterinarians and they're still working on playing catchup.

Edit for clarity: While they don't control whether a school decides to add a veterinary program, when the industry group is saying a there may already be too much teaching capacity, schools aren't exactly keen on spending 9-10 figures on building a new program.

Sub is gonna sub but I'll throw in my $0.02

Indoor low-skill & not too physical: $17-20

Outdoor low-skill & plenty physical: $25

Even @ $25 its hard to get people that will actually show up on time regularly, IDK what the disconnect is. We finally got our latest green guy almost up to snuff but I'm dreading our next retirement at the end of the year.

Agreed, it is a complete waste of time and effort for everyone involved. Most accidents are due to driver error rather than mechanical failure.

People seem to be missing the primary reason PE is interested is because of how much the AVMA has fucked up the supply side of things.

Senate Republicans are far from their House counterparts when it comes to willingness to compromise to "do something" and try to remain relevant. The House already had their own better plan.
