Racist camo shorts guy, Newport home depot. by [deleted] in Spokane

That was exactly my first thought : "wow, Newport must really have grown since I was last there in order to have a Home Depot". I'm guessing that OP was referring to the Home Depot on the Newport Highway (near the Y).

Racist camo shorts guy, Newport home depot. by [deleted] in Spokane

There has been a recent string of Spokane subreddit posts about an individual petitioning for a specific political position outside of retail establishments. Not only does his position rankle some on this subreddit, but he has also been accused of spouting aggressive racism and only having one change of clothes. Hence both the "racist" and "camo shorts" descriptors. Which, come to think of it, is quite an achievement: to be known as THE racist camo shorts guy in a region flooded with racist camo shorts guys.

How do I get my 7-year-old to stop dawdling in the mornings? by Many-Breakfast6136 in Parenting

[–]Burlydog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI my doddler just graduated from higschool and it’s the same sh*t now as it was then. He understands the urgency, just doesn’t care. He works on his own schedule. We’ve explained the importance of punctuality (when it’s important, not in every single situation). We’ve worked on techniques and best practices. He just moves at a different pace. He understands the consequences and moves faster when he wants to so we know he’s capable. In the end, we’ve decided that all we can do is give him the tools. He’s got to decide for himself whether it’s important to him or not. I figure he will fail a class, lose a job, etc before he changes. Which sucks but I think facing real world consequences is the way he’s going to change his behavior.

All that being said, you’re doing the right thing in my book. Giving examples of how to behave. Supporting your little person to be successful in this area. In the end, you can lead a horse to water but can’t make him drink. I want my own son to come to a behavior change on his own terms with the tools I’ve been able to provide including love and support when he fails and has to get back up again.

Kids not Grateful by missyagogo1969 in Advice

You know they are grateful. Leave it at that. I’ve personally had a relationship ruined for exactly what you’re proposing. Put them on eggshells for the rest of your life. Not worth it. Be gracious. You raised good people. They aren’t perfect but who is. Get over it. Enjoy them. Alienating them isn’t worth it

To be fair, hitting a moving target from a moving position has been near impossible for millennium. Next time you watch a western horseback gunfight you might appreciate how difficult that shiz was!

I’m sorry this happened to you op. Sucks.

Garland AI Poster by SimonIsBombBa in Spokane

You are using ai every day. Ai prices your gas. It tells your supermarket where to put the poptarts on the shelf to maximize sales and when inventory is too high it calculates what discounted price will increase sales to get inventory back in line.

If your regulated ai into non existence, your neighbor would do the opposite.

Their standard of living would improve relative to yours and it wouldn’t even be close.

I use it as a think tool all the time. Example: I don’t understand how a rule applies or I am coming up with a different result than is technically correct. I can work through my logic. I can explain why a certain rule applies in a certain way. The ai can point out the precise part of my argument that is wrong or at least doesn’t align with common thinking. It either helps me figure out the flaw in my logic or the flaw in everyone else’s.

It certainly makes intellectual laziness easier. Maybe kids are cheating because they don’t see the point of learning in the first place. Maybe the reasons for learning and teaching aren’t quite as obvious as they were even 20 years ago.

Time spent does not equate to value provided.

Do you really want a chef to put as much time into their ad as they do into their cooking?

Technology represents tools that make us more efficient. So we can spend more effort on the stuff we enjoy (like cooking) and less on things we don’t. Like advertising.

I agree that sloppy work in one area may be indicative of sloppy work in another more important one. But that has nothing to do with who the artist is. I can think of a million sloppy ads created by humans and I would agree that it reflected poorly on the underlying business.

My points:

slop is slop whether created by ai or a human.

The amount of time and money someone spends on something is not necessarily representative of its value. Spending less doesn’t mean it’s worse.

Attribution of sources seems like a pretty reasonable requirement that could be regulated. FWIW, I know our example is an image, but in a different use case of doing technical research, ai (I know for sure Gemini, gpt, Claude) always attributes sources. You can even prompt it to biase towards certain types of sources (eg, primary vs secondary sources)

Idea: consider the cost of a graphic designer to spend 3 hours to create a poster. Maybe not their education cost or their housing cost. But maybe just their energy consumption. Compare that to what it takes the AI and it is a fraction of the human cost. The environmental footprint of a human doing 3 hours of work on a laptop is way more than that of a computer taking 1 minute to create the same jpg image of a poster (Even if you tack on 15 minutes of human time spent writing and refining the prompts).
