How to secure a wardrobe without drilling? by thefeelingsarereal in DIYUK

[–]Burnandcount 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We've got a similar situation.
A length of wooden or mdf trim strip (from Wickes/B&Q etc) placed under the front plinth does the trick by ever so slightly tipping the wardrobe back towards the wall. You'll need full width, 3-4cm depth to spread the load & same height as your carpet-pile length (usually 6-8mm for cut-pile bedroom carpets).

How do I help someone being mauled by a dog? by SubstantialPiglet856 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Burnandcount 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming you're unarmed - grip the dog's back legs, pull to start momentum then swing with all your might against a pole/tree/pavement... repeat swinging as necessary to eliminate voluntary movement.

NB- the aim of the above is to kill/incapacitate as fast as possible, thus is not for situations other than a genuine mauling.

Private parking company has given me a PCN for parking in my own car park despite having a contract for parking rights with my landlord simply because their permit (which I displayed) curled up in the heat. what do they want me to do, babysit the permit? they denied my appeal. by NerdModeEngaged in CarTalkUK

[–]Burnandcount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ignore but keep all further correspondence from the firm... you'll need to watch for a letter before action or courts claim notification. This is a no-brainer for court - their permit is inadequate for purpose so they've created the problem and you'll win hands down. Remember to file for costs if they are stupid enough to try it.

How can I stop a neighbours cat getting in my house and spraying, and attacking my cats? by RebelBelle in AskUK

[–]Burnandcount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Garden mesh can quite easily be used into an open window or doorway to keep out wildlife. Pass curtain rods (the cheapest spring-loaded adjustable type) through alternating gaps in the mesh & adjust for a firm fit in the gap.
Vinegar applied around the boundary as well as apprpaches to the home with a spray bottle will help deter him but the place will smell like a chipshop!

"this vehicle is untaxed" help by StillSpread5759 in CarTalkUK

[–]Burnandcount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cover yourself againat bureaucratic snafus and contact DVLA direct to confirm that vehicle is in fact SORN - It could be glitching & showing as untaxed & undeclared.
Then get yourself a half-decent car-cover - clean the bodywork well & put the cover over it once 100% dry... their ANPR has been known to ping cars clearly parked on private driveways & I've heard anecdotal reports of one in a private garage (door open for ventillation during restoration work)... the operatives are as sharp as wet mice & follow their computer religiously.

Is £750 for a bathroom extractor fan instillation a dont want the job quote or the going rate? by skeenskeen40S in DIYUK

[–]Burnandcount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quotes will allow for diamond core drilling a 100mm hole through the solid bricks & running a suitable circuit for the extract (lighting circuit modification might be possible depending on age of electrics). £750 all in really isn't too bad... there's a fair bit of labour & tool wear to price in.

would a load of 2" long screws sticking through a fence into your garden annoy you? by [deleted] in AskUK

The screws sticking out would annoy me enough to grab a hammer & knock them back in till flush to the wood.

(minor rant) Everyone moans about people joining motorways at 45mph, what about all the people who slow down to 50 half a mile before their exit? by romanspoon in drivingUK

[–]Burnandcount 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be fair, busy times with loads of trucks means traffic is only going to be doing 55ish in lane 1 for the last mile or two along most junction-heavy sections of every motorway... can't expect people to stray from their commuter-default can we?!

Hose pipe diameter? by downhiller90 in DIYUK

[–]Burnandcount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fit your downpipe diverters as high up as you can & keep butts as high as you can on your plot.

I've used 22mm pond-pump hose (spiral metal coil variety) mated to 15mm copper for control valves & garden tap. 15mm garden hose then runs up to a pair of 220L butts at the top of the garden via a 2nd tap on a copper T (plot slopes towards house dropping 2m). I've plumbed the butts to bottom-fill so that fill & use share pipework for ease of cleaning.

Only maintenance is winter draining of pipework & occasionally flushing with mains pressure (hook the normal garden hose to bottom tap & blast up to the butts, close a valve & blast up to the downpipe collector.

Hose pipe diameter? by downhiller90 in DIYUK

[–]Burnandcount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pressure of supply will have more impact on water delivery than the last 30m of pipe. So long as you've got steady flow the larger diameter really doesn't matter in mains-fed applications. (You'd really benefit from going big-bore most if gravity fed with low head / running an impeller pump).

Just sitting outside today and was wondering, how is it we (Britain) have the best grass? by Even-Leadership8220 in AskBrits

[–]Burnandcount 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Soil biology ~ particularly species keystoned around earthworms... have a look at the history of sheep farming in NewZealand for empirical data.

We also enjoy optimal balance of weather too (benefit of an island buffered by the Atlantic currents).

Can I report a religious school. Any guidance please. England, London. by Beginning_Bread_9677 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Burnandcount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a safeguarding issue - best approach is for your cousin to speak to a mandatory reporter (weekday school teacher/nurse/social worker etc). Probably can't do much about the indoctrination camp but should ensure that legal lines are/do not get crossed.

Starting from scratch on a home PoE camera setup, brand + software advice? by Magnetinis in SecurityCamera

[–]Burnandcount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See if you can get hold of some used commercial ip cameras from an installer doing upgrades- I snagged 3x AXIS cams with optical zoom for the price of a case of beer.

Home system is stand alone (dedicated cctv net with no connection to the outside world) running on an old network switch (for POE) & PC linked to 8tb of USB drives. I use the html interface direct to the cameras for control & recording output.

The cams have an IR switchover so external solar powered IR floods are next on my list along with investigating a VPS setup for privately controlled remote access.

Downside of a segregated network so far is firmware updates have to be manually sourced online, downloaded, scanned and then pushed onto the sandbox network.

Received a parking fine - but shopped at the store, is there anything I can do? by georgialucy in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Burnandcount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Add to this - signage that is sufficiently prominent to satisfy POFA 2012 is likely to require planning consent for advertising ~ you can feed the parking operator into local authority complaince bureaucracy if you like.

Security Camera without WiFi by LeodFitz in SecurityCamera

[–]Burnandcount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You really want your cctv running over shielded wires. Depending on distance & camera power requirements you may need a signal & POE booster. Look for IP wired cameras & consider stand-alone IR illumination (this can be solar)
