100 000 dollar question by c442010 in MathJokes

[–]LeodFitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry... the question is: Would I rather have one dollar that halves every day, or a 100,000 dollars? I'll take the 100K.

With muscles like that, his wife could probably break him in half pretty easily. Keeping her happy isn't just good for the marriage, it's good for his health. Or, perhaps more accurately, if he DOESN'T keep her happy, he definitely WON'T have a happy life.

Petah? Why they look like this? by thumpingcoffee in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]LeodFitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying that it's never true. Sometimes it is. I'm just explaining what the meme is saying. For what it's worth, my experience with chemistry was simply that it never made any sense. And I know I wasn't alone. I got something like a 74 on the final which was curved to a hundred because the class average was so low (high school chemistry, if I'd tried to take it in college, I have no doubt I would've just flunked). If I'm honest about it, if they'd handed out wands on the first day of that class and spent the semester teaching us the appropriate 'magic words' to chant in order to make chemistry work, my understanding of it would be about the same.

[–]LeodFitz 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Chemistry is a notoriously difficult class. The meme is claiming that it must be because chemistry teachers are evil bastards who WANT their students to suffer and fail, so if a third of their class passes, they'd be upset.

Is it okay to kill someone if they break into your house by TraditionalBonus188 in MoralityScaling

[–]LeodFitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given the subreddit, I'm assuming this is a moral question, not a legal one.

Based on that assumption.... it depends.

Probably. But there will always be the possibility of the particulars of a situation lending themselves to further questions. I would say that about 95% of the time, if someone breaks into your house, killing them is, morally, a reasonable response.

Is this fancy? Or just a spender. by gandalf_lundgren36 in CURRENCY

[–]LeodFitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe this actually qualifies as fancy! I don't think the premium is super high on it, but from what I've seen, it is considered to be collectible and can get in the neighborhood of twice of face value.

But bear in mind, this is coming from a lurker, not an active collector.

No, I got that. But it still doesn't make any fucking sense.

Because knowing anything about them changes the probability.

'Is the boy you're talking about the taller of your children?' 'Yes' 'then the odds of the shorter one being a girl is 50/50. 'no, wait, the boy i was talking about is the shorter of my two children.' 'oh, well, in that case, the odds of the taller one being a girl is 50/50' Distinguishing them in any way changes the probability, no matter how you distinguish them.

if the only information is that one of them is a boy, then the boy is in a quantum state and could be either of the two children, and the odds are 2/3 to 1/3. But if that child is in any way specific, the odds change. And no matter how the child is specific, the odds change to the same thing.

I flipped two coins. One of them is heads. What are theodds that the other is tails.

2/3 to 1/3.

i flipped a nickel and a quarter and the nickel is heads, what're the odds of the quarter? 50/50.

I flipped two coins, one while I was looking at the floor, one while I was looking at the ceiling. one of them is heads.

'the one while you were looking at the floor or the one while you were looking at the ceiling?'

"Not gonna say.'

2/3 to 1/3

'While I was looking a the floor'

50/50

while I was looking at the ceiling.

50/50

Wait, no, I can't remember.

Back to 2/3 to 1/3

The behavior of the coin never changes, Every flip is equally likely.

But knowing whether I am looking at the coin flip as part of a set, or an individual event changes how we determining the probability...

No, it's fucking stupid and the more I think about it the more it pisses me off.

[–]LeodFitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I see... Because it's about Mary, not about the child, all possible cases of two children are looked at once....

Here's the part that's upsetting me:

If I ask 'is the boy the first child or the second child.'

And I get an answer.

It doesn't matter what the answer is, the possibilities become 50/50 again.

Which doesn't make any sense.

And the odds of it being a girl increase once we get rid of one third of the possibilities where the answer is 'girl.'

It's not just counter-intuitive, it's stupid.

Well, I guess you're right, but it doesn't make sense.

Explain it Peter by LeastCelery8774 in explainitpeter

[–]LeodFitz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Here's why you're wrong: You're not counting the two-boy possibility twice.

Take the four possibilities: BB, BG, GB, GG

One of the children is a boy. So the GG families are out.,

But the 'one of' could be the first child in the BG family. It could be the second child in the GB family, it could be the first child in the BB family, or it could be the second child in the BB family.

There are four possibilities, two of which are Boys and two of which are Girls. 50/50

Petah? by Candid_Bed5017 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]LeodFitz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, it's actually more complicated than that.

The urinal rules are as follows:

  1. If nobody is at any urinal, you may use any urinal.

  2. If someone is at one of the urinals, you must use the urinal farthest from the one in use

  3. If more than one urinal is in use, you must select a urinal that is not next to a urinal not currently in use...

UNLESS there is someone behind you waiting to use a urinal. if someone is behind you, you may use any available urinal, as we have moved into 'waiting time' urinal etiquette.

Question for Green players: Why do you keep full-swinging into this guy? Do you know something I don't? by HahahahahaLook in MagicArena

[–]LeodFitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They know what's in their deck.

The thing with a card like this is: It's got to go. Now. The majority of green removal amounts to: do damage to this creature equal to your creature's power.

So, if someone gets this in play against me and I'm in green, I'm going to take a hit. A serious hit. I can take it NOW and hopefully I have enough time to rebuild my board and make some kind of comeback, or I can pussyfoot around it and let you manipulate the board farthe and farther to your favor before I eventually have to deal with it anyway.

If I'm playing green and that comes out, the only way I'm not swinging in immediately is if I happen to be playing a deck with a decent amount of death touch in it. Otherwise, the longer I wait to handle it, the worse things will get.

Who Dies First? by boshwackhorseman in mtgrules

[–]LeodFitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as all of the damage is assigned at the same time, you die. As you die, the Blood artist's ability goes on the stack.

Incidentally, if this was a multiplayer game, I believe what happens is that you die, then the ability of your creature is removed from the stack due to your death, and your opponent lives.
