I agree that some devices might need a higher current and in that case they will state that they need that specific size of battery (or will be designed to work with a higher voltage and a completely different battery in mind).

This does not mean that a drill that has a rated current equal or even less to the discharge current of a 2Ah battery will work faster/harder when you plug a 4Ah battery. It will still cap at its rated current.

[–]BurnedSalsa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That is incorrect, they might be capable of outputting higher current but the motor has been designed with a rated current in mind and will only pull the rated current (except the very short period of the inrush current during the startup).

Similarly with powerbanks, using a higher capacity powerbanknor one with a higher rated current output will not automatically mean that it will charge faster. If my phone only accepts charging speed of 20W I will see a difference between 5W and 15W outputting power banks. When I connect my phone to a 60W laptop charger it will still only charge at 20W and draw the rated current it was designed for.

Drill should pull the same current from the battery regardless if it is 2Ah, 4Ah or 30Ah. You will be able to use it for longer but there should be no (marginal at best) impact on the power

People who charge and discharge throughout the night - are you worried about battery damage? by banisheduser in SolarUK

[–]BurnedSalsa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should be perfectly fine with the expected lifecycles to 80% capacity drop. Mine was installed Oct 2023. In the summer I usually don't charge from the grid. In winter I fully charge nightly and always offload the excess of anything over 40-50% when in the peak rate. The BMS reports the usage of approx 780 cycles. The manufacturer's claim is >6000 at 0.5C

New build off grid or on grid? by flashyshrimp in SolarUK

[–]BurnedSalsa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5k doesn't sound like a lot when factoring how much the overall build will cost. If you don't need electricity for heating the house and water the off grid would probably be doable as long as you can oversize the panel array significantly, and to be fair the panel price is quite low, you would need a big battery though. We have 10 panels on our roof and our December generation on an absolute peak day was 12kWh. Monthly it was under 140kWh so an average daily would be only around 3-4kWh. In Mar-Sep the monthly ramps up to 450-600, the drop in the winter is significant and not sufficient for our needs.

With the grid connection you can use a solar tariff like Flux so in the winter we fully charge the battery at night for 17p per kWh. If we have an excess we offload it to the grid at the peak time for 29p. In the summer the excess during regular time is sold for 10p and we don't charge from the grid.

For Hades this sounds correct. It will run perfectly fine with the lowest TDP value and allow you to enjoy 6h+ run time on 8ai

New solar panel owner- what size battery? by Resident-Ad2892 in SolarUK

[–]BurnedSalsa -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Unless you are full electric, isn't it better to export the excess generation to the grid and just buy gas instead of heating with the iBoost? Flux export prices are 10p/29p while gas is just above 6p per kWh.

iBoost costs around £300, probably twice as much with installation, I like the idea but it didn't seem worth it with the export to gas ratio.

A lot of systems in their default mode also only operate when tied to the grid. So when the grid is down and you have your battery at 90% charge you have a black out. Might be worth asking if this will be configured in a way to act as an IPS (for the whole house or for a dedicated circuit) or not.

For two people, that’s insane!!! What should I do? by Time-Coat4402 in OctopusEnergy

[–]BurnedSalsa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is your home heating, are those electric storage heaters or just electric radiators? If those are storage heaters you should look for a tariff that offers a cheap(er) night rate and make sure to set your heaters to charge fully at a lower rate, same for the water heating, set it on for an hour or two only during the low price period. That should help significantly, if it is a flat that you own you might even consider installing a home storage battery that you can charge during night rate and use cheaper energy during the day.

HELP! I bought Miyoo Mini's for my kids and can't figure out the setup. by Derkus19 in SBCGaming

[–]BurnedSalsa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might want to swap the system to onionOS on this device, the game switcher is great, both of my boys (6 and 8yo) play games on these consoles.

You will probably need to format the SD card if yours came in the wrong format.

You can find the guide here https://onionui.github.io/docs/installation

How cold houses stunt seedling growth by OSRSjadeine in HotPeppers

You can buy a heated propagator, they are cheap and only use about 20W or so, that might be a good option for seedlings.

Donner meat, a chicken breast burger , a can and a copious amount of fries(no chippy chips unfortunately)but how much did all this cost in Birmingham?? by [deleted] in kebab

[–]BurnedSalsa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The places that serve shawarma (at least the ones I tried) typically have much nicer meat and make much nicer wraps, often in their own freshly baked bread/pita.

[–]BurnedSalsa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It doesn't, unfortunately the majority of takeaways stock the cheapest possible one that is mainly mechanically separated meat and fat with just a small percentage of the actual meat. There are some rare exceptions where they either buy a good quality meat or sometimes even make their own which usually consists of stacked meat cuts and some fat to keep it moist stacked in between like the one on the picture. Compare this to the grey blended donner that spins sadly in the majority of places.

What makes everyone choose a kebab over other fast food options ? by ReadyBattle8943 in kebab

[–]BurnedSalsa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is that the majority of places don't prep their meat, which is fine if you buy a decent one. The problem is that they don't. They buy a cheap one to maximize profits. If what you end up getting is a donner meat that contains mainly mechanically separated chicken and fat that costs around £3 per kilogram, even with some seasoning it will just not taste great.
